Job Purpose:

  • Lead the development, management, and conservation of the Corallium's living marine collection in alignment with institutional objectives and international standards.
  • Ensure exceptional animal care, exhibit quality, and collection sustainability while advancing conservation, research, and educational initiatives through innovative aquatic husbandry practices and strategic collection planning.


Job Responsibilities:


Collection Management & Development

  • Implement and maintain the Institutional Collection Plan, ensuring strategic development of marine exhibits aligned with the Corallium's mission and Red Sea conservation objective.
  • Direct acquisition and de-acquisition activities according to established protocols, ensuring compliance with international conservation standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee specimen health management, habitat design, water quality parameters, and life support systems to maintain exceptional animal welfare standards.
  • Lead planning for distinct Red Sea habitats, including coordination of collection needs, exhibit design, and habitat maintenance.
  • Supervise quarantine operations and biosecurity protocols to ensure collection health and prevent disease introduction.


Staff Leadership & Development

  • Manage a team of aquarists and collection staff, providing technical guidance and performance management.
  • Establish work plans, priorities, and performance standards aligned with institutional goals.
  • Develop and implement training programs on specialized husbandry techniques and species-specific care requirements.


Conservation & Research Initiatives

  • Lead breeding and propagation programs for priority Red Sea species, supporting conservation goals.
  • Collaborate with research staff on collection-based studies, providing husbandry expertise.
  • Establish relationships with conservation organizations and other aquariums to advance marine conservation initiatives.


Habitat Development & Visitor Experience

  • Collaborate with exhibit design teams to ensure habitats meet biological requirements of collection species while creating compelling visitor experiences.
  • Provide scientific expertise for exhibit interpretation, educational programming, and public presentations.
  • Evaluate exhibit effectiveness and visitor engagement, recommending improvements to enhance educational impact and visitor experience.


Policies, Systems, Processes, Procedures, Standards and Reports

  • Develop and maintain collection management policies and protocols aligned with international best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and standards including CITES, AZA, IUCN, and local environmental laws.
  • Maintain detailed collection records and prepare regular reports for leadership and stakeholders.


Safety, Quality & Environment

  • Implement safety protocols for staff working with marine animals, life support systems, and dive operations.
  • Maintain highest standards of water quality, habitat maintenance, and animal welfare throughout all collection systems.
  • Ensure ethical collection practices that prioritize animal welfare and conservation impact.


Continuous Improvement

  • Evaluate collection management practices, identifying opportunities for improvement in husbandry techniques and operational efficiency.
  • Incorporate new technologies and research findings into collection management practices.
  • Facilitate knowledge exchange with other institutions to benchmark practices and adopt innovations.


Job Requirements:


Qualification and Experience

  • University degree in Marine Biology, Zoology, or related field required.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in aquarium collection management, with at least 5 years in a supervisory role.
  • Demonstrated expertise in marine animal husbandry, life support systems, and exhibit development.
  • Experience with coral propagation, breeding programs, and quarantine/disease management protocols.
  • Scientific diving certification preferred.


Skills

  • Expert knowledge of marine biology and ecology, particularly of Red Sea species.
  • Advanced understanding of life support systems and water chemistry.
  • Strong leadership, project management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in collection management software and budget development.


Job Context

  • Work is performed in office, laboratory, and aquarium environments with frequent exposure to water, high humidity, and marine animals.
  • Position requires occasional SCUBA diving in exhibit tanks and occasional field collection activities.
  • Irregular hours including weekends, holidays, and emergency response may be required.
  • International and domestic travel for conferences, collection activities, and professional development will be necessary.
  • Position requires physical capability to lift up to 25kg and work in various environmental conditions.
