Job Description and Requirements

Job Summary:

Performs advanced chemical testing, direct and supervise laboratory activities of chemists and environmental technicians. Review test results and prepares test reports. Perform method development/method validation studies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and distributes works to authorized chemists, supervises working areas and ensures that all tests are carried out as per required standard test methods and SOPs and as per Customers’ requirements.
  • Assist Department Manager/Section Head in communication with customers to discuss work related issues and work progress.
  • Performs advanced chemical tests assigned to him/her in accordance with relevant standards /SOPs in expedient, quality conscious manner. Ensure that the test data is recorded accurately in accordance to related test methods and SOPs
  • Checking of laboratory worksheets of other chemists for accuracy of data entry and calculations before their submission to the Section Head / Senior Chemical/Environmental Engineer /concerned engineer for reporting.
  • Upon an authorization by Department Manager: preparation and initial checking of test reports prior to their submission for approval by the Technical Section Head/ Department Manager.
  • Participate in the review, data generation and/or writing of technical documents such as SOPs, development and validation of new test methods. Develop method validation or verification plans, perform method validation experiments, and generate method validation or verification reports.
  • Ensure implementation of in process quality assurance programs as defined in related standard methods/SOPs, review quality control data, detect trends, investigate any outlying data and in coordination with the Direct Supervisor, propose and apply required corrective actions.
  • Provide technical support and conduct technical training and orientation training of chemists and technicians. Supports the Department Manager in the authorization of chemists to perform accredited tests/activities.
  • Monitors the stock of reagents and certified reference materials and ensure they are maintained in required quantity and within their expiration date.
  • Contacts suppliers to collect offers for reagents and consumables, assists Department Manager in preparation of related purchase orders.
  • Follow up the requirements for good housekeeping.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation in good working order, including appropriate procedures for usage, clean-up, calibration and maintenance. Inform Direct Supervisor for any repair when required.
  • Implement ACES Quality Management System requirements.
  • Implements the requirements of ACES HSE Management system including using of appropriate protective tools and safe work with and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Any duties or responsibilities assigned by the management.

Reporting To:

This position will directly report to the Chemical & Environmental Manager/ Section Head.

Direct Reports:

Chemist, Technician, Assistant Technician.

Job Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry.
  • Minimun 2-4 years of experience in the field of testing laboratory specialized in analysis of environmental, construction, chemical and food testing. Preferably with hands-on experience in the operation of sophisticated laboratory equipment. (ICP, GC-MS, HPLC, LC-MS..etc)

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Fundamentals of Chemistry.
  • General knowledge of general science and mathematics including algebra, statistics and data analysis.
  • Chemical laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology and procedures.
  • Principles and practices of qualitative and quantitative chemistry and chemical analysis.
  • Proper sample collection procedures and techniques.
  • Mathematical calculations used in chemical analyses.
  • Standard reference methods and standard operation procedures.
  • International and local technical specifications related to the scope of tested materials (GSO, QCC, WHO, etc. as applicable)
  • Operation of advances chemical instruments (ICP, GC, ICP-MS, GC-MS, HPLC, etc as applicable)
  • Method development, method validation and measurement uncertainty.
  • Laboratory instruments and equipment- operation, calibration and routine maintenance
  • Awareness of requirements of ISO 17025 and ACES Quality Management System
  • Awareness of requirements of ACES HSE Management System and especially, working with hazardous chemicals and hazardous waste disposal.
  • Excellent technical reading and writing skills in English language
  • LIMS, Ms. Word, MS Excel, Ms. Outlook.
