Job Description

Job Responsibilities

Are you ready to join an innovative team of professionals dedicated to telling South Carolina’s stories and serving as a trusted educational resource for audiences across the state? Do you want to create engaging, impactful digital content that showcases everything from dinosaurs and jazz concerts to space exploration and major educational initiatives?

The South Carolina State Museum (SCSM) is the largest museum in the state, home to a collection of over 1.1 million objects and specimens, with more than 5 million visitors over its 36-year history. It is the only museum in the U.S. to feature four floors of multidisciplinary exhibition galleries, a full-dome planetarium, a 4D theater, and an observatory—all under one roof.

SCSM is currently undergoing a multi-million-dollar renovation project, making this an exciting time to join our team and contribute to reimagining the museum for the next generation of visitors, students, and scholars. Located in Columbia, South Carolina’s capital city, the museum is at the heart of a community known for its mild climate, affordable cost of living, vibrant downtown, and easy access to both the mountains and the coast.

We are seeking a Digital Content Coordinator to play a key role in developing and managing digital content across the museum’s website, social media platforms, and email communications. This position will bring the museum’s stories, exhibitions, and programs to life for a growing statewide and national audience. Responsibilities include managing social media schedules, producing targeted e-newsletters, supporting digital campaigns, and analyzing performance metrics. The ideal candidate will bring creativity, strong editorial judgment, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Develop, coordinate, and schedule content for the museum’s social media channels (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube)
  • Write and edit clear, accurate, and welcoming post copy in alignment with the museum’s editorial standards
  • Monitor social media performance metrics, track engagement, and produce reports for department leadership
  • Implement a plan for organizing media assets (photos, video, etc.) for reuse in future campaigns.
  • Create and manage weekly e-newsletters and media newsrooms to keep subscribers engaged and up to date.
  • Develop a plan for and execute specialized e-newsletters for targeted interest groups (such as members, educators, art enthusiasts, etc). Write, edit, and customize content to reflect each group’s unique preferences and needs.
  • Develop and update content for the museum’s website (with SEO best practices in mind). Support related initiatives by adding new event details, blogs, or multimedia content as needed. Ensure online information is accurate and accessible.
  • Assist in coordinating graphics and preparing copy for paid digital campaigns and sponsored content.
  • Utilize Canva or similar tools to produce visually compelling digital assets that align with the museum’s brand.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in English, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, Communications, or other related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years relevant experience creating, developing, coordinating and producing high-quality engaging digital content and communications.
  • Experience with social media platform administration and content scheduling.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and organizational skills, with strong attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in graphic design tools (such as Canva or Adobe Express) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with website content management systems (such as WordPress) is desirable.
  • Ability to track and interpret digital metrics and translate data into actionable strategies.

Additional Comments

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other museum departments.
