Job Description - ELV Draftsman

Job Overview:

ELV (Extra-Low Voltage) Draftsman is responsible to create technical drawings and designs related to electrical, electronic, and communication systems within a building or infrastructure project. ELV systems typically include security and CCTV surveillance systems, Access control systems, Audiovisual systems, Data networks, PA/BGM Systems, Audio/Video Intercom Systems, Gate Barriers & Speed Gate Systems, etc.

Responsibilities:

Drafting and Design: Responsible for creating detailed drawings, plans, and schematics using computer-aided design (CAD) software. This includes developing layouts, elevation drawings, cable routing plans, CCTV coverage drawings, schematic diagrams, control room layout diagrams, and equipment location drawings.

System Integration: Collaborate with other engineering disciplines, such as electrical, mechanical, and structural engineers, to integrate ELV systems into the overall building design. Ensure that the ELV systems are properly coordinated with other building systems.

Equipment Selection: Assist in the selection and specification of appropriate ELV equipment, such as cameras, access control panels, readers, EDR & push buttons, speakers, amplifiers, cabling, passive and active network equipment and UPS system based on project requirements and industry standards.

Documentation: Create and maintain accurate technical documentation, including equipment schedules, wiring diagrams, and bill of quantities. Ensure that all drawings and documentation comply with relevant codes, standards, and regulations.

Coordination and Communication: Work closely with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to understand project requirements, provide technical support, and coordinate design changes as needed. Effective communication and collaboration are essential in this role.

Quality Control: Review and check drawings and designs for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to project specifications. Identify and resolve any discrepancies or conflicts that may arise during the design process.

Site Support: Occasionally, you may be required to visit project sites to provide technical support during the installation, testing, and commissioning of ELV systems. This may involve working closely with consultants, contractors and subcontractors to ensure that the installation is carried out according to design specifications.

Requirements:

Proficiency in CAD Software: Strong knowledge and experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software, such as AutoCAD or Revit, are essential for creating accurate technical drawings and designs.

Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with electrical, electronic, and communication systems, particularly ELV systems, is crucial. Understanding concepts such as cabling, equipment placement, and system integration is necessary to create effective designs.

Attention to Detail: An ELV draftsman must have excellent attention to detail to ensure precise and accurate drawings. Small errors or omissions in drawings can lead to significant problems during installation or operation.

Knowledge of Codes and Standards: Familiarity with relevant industry codes, standards, and regulations is important to ensure compliance and safety in the design of ELV systems. Examples include MOI-SSD regulations for CCTV systems, Qatar Construction Specifications – QCS 2014, Ashghal standards & regulations, etc.

Communication and Collaboration: Effective communication skills are vital for collaborating with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders. You should be able to understand project requirements, convey technical information clearly, and work well within a team environment.

Problem-Solving Skills: Being able to identify and resolve design issues or conflicts is crucial. An ELV draftsman should possess strong problem-solving skills to overcome challenges that may arise during the design process.

Time Management: The ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines is important. Prioritizing work, organizing project files, and ensuring timely completion of drawings are necessary skills for an ELV draftsman.

Continuous Learning: The field of ELV systems is constantly evolving, so having a willingness to learn and stay updated on new technologies, software, and industry trends is highly beneficial.
