Job Description

Position Overview:

Responsible for the safe, efficient, and coordinated operation of railway depots and the effective real-time management of infrastructure faults and failures from within the Operations Control Centre (OCC). This leadership role oversees a diverse team, including staff managing rolling stock movements, depot workflows, as well as Facilities Controllers who monitor rail systems, coordinate power supply operations, and manage fault response across all maintenance disciplines. The Manager ensures that depot operations and technical fault responses align with service schedules, safety standards, and operational priorities. With a strong focus on team leadership, critical decision-making, and operational resilience, this role plays a vital part in supporting seamless train service delivery and enhancing the overall performance and reliability of the network.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and support a diverse team responsible for depot operations and OCC-based Facilities Control, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
  • Oversee the safe and efficient movement of rolling stock within depots, ensuring alignment with operational timetables, maintenance schedules, and stabling plans.
  • Supervise the real-time monitoring of rail systems and the power supply network, ensuring rapid and coordinated responses to faults, failures, and infrastructure incidents.
  • Ensure Facilities Controllers provide effective technical support and fault management across all maintenance disciplines, escalating as required to minimise service disruption.
  • Coordinate depot workflow and resource allocation to meet operational demands and maintenance requirements while maintaining safety and efficiency.
  • Ensure all activities comply with relevant safety protocols, operating standards, and regulatory requirements, particularly during degraded or emergency operations.
  • Lead or support the response to operational incidents within depots and facilities, ensuring clear documentation, timely communication, and lessons learned.
  • Act as the key interface between depot teams, control center staff, maintenance providers, and other operational functions to ensure coordinated action and effective information flow.
  • Monitor team and system performance, identify areas for improvement, and contribute to the development of operational procedures and training.

Academic Qualifications:

  • University degree in Rail Operations, Customer Service, Operations, Transport, Management, Business, Safety or equivalent professional experience and/or qualification deemed to be equivalent.

Experience:

  • Significant experience in rail operations, ideally within a high-speed or ETCS Level 2-enabled environment.
  • Proven record in delivering continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Experience in the development and delivery of Competence Management Systems in a safety orientated environment.
