Under the supervision of the Association Academic Initiatives Coordinator and consistent with the
mission of the YMCA, the Summer Y Readers Teacher will be responsible for planning and implementing
literacy-based activities for students participating in the program, providing each participant with the
opportunity to develop physically, mentally, spiritually and socially.

Essential Functions
- Use student data to plan literacy instruction that includes differentiation based on individual
- Execute lesson plans as an integral part of the daily program, making changes as they become
- Analyze and use student data to build groupings and inform instruction
- Facilitate test administration to ensure high validity rate
- Implement arrival procedures to ensure the safety of students
- Provide guidance to instructional assistants and volunteers that allows them to support instruction
- Implement positive behavior management practices
- Build and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, and families
- Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment
Performs other duties and tasks as assigned by leadership
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Current NC teaching certification required
- Minimum 1 year of experience teaching literacy in grades K-3 required
- Principal recommendation required
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Ability to adapt to changing needs and circumstances
- Ability to problem solve
All YMCA team members are expected to maintain a current and active status for all safety, risk, and
programming certifications defined by the YMCA of Greater Charlotte.
Working Conditions
- Speak concisely and effectively communicate in English, written and oral
- Walk, stand, kneel and sit (including on the floor) while maintaining alertness for extended periods
- Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids
- Lift and/or assist children up to 65 pounds in weight
- Lift and carry supplies weighing up to 50 pounds in weight
- Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an
