I am currently a group leader in the Translational Oncology Research Center at the Qatar Biomedical Research Institute in Doha, Qatar and hold a joint associate professor position at the College of Health and Life Sciences at the Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar. With over 20 years of experience in academic and business leadership, I am passionate about fostering a culture of eco-innovation and entrepreneurship that contributes to a sustainable society. As the Associate Director for Entrepreneurial Transformation at Qatar University, I oversee the design and implementation of programs and initiatives that support the development of entrepreneurial skills and mindsets as well as the nurturing of budding technology startups among students, faculty, and staff. Abdelbary Elhissi is a leader in higher education with strong expertise in research excellence, strategy, innovation, institutional ranking and accreditation. Abdelbary obtained his PhD in 2005 from the School of Pharmacy, University College London (UCL) where he then worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow (2005-2006). He worked in pharmaceutical industry’s R&D at Lipoxen Technologies, London Bioscience Innovation Center as Senior Scientist for the development of anticancer nanomedicines (2006-2007). Abdelbary joined the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in UK as Lecturer (2007- 2011) and Senior Lecturer (2011-2014), where he was the lead of Pharmaceutics and established one of the largest drug delivery research groups in the UK. He was the Deputy Head and a founder of the UCLan’s Institute of Nanotechnology and Bioengineering (2011-2014). Abdelbary moved to Qatar University as Associate Professor at the College of Pharmacy in 2014 and was promoted to Professor in 2019. Parallel to this, Abdelbary is the Founding Manager of the Research Excellence Office (July 2017 – May 2020), and served as Director of Research Planning and Development (June 2020 - May 2022). Abdelbary authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and published 3 books, supervised more than 25 MSc and PhD students, and secured more than USD 2.5 Million for research funding. Abdelbary is a Certified Knowledge Manager (CKM), and served as a Visiting Professor at Sichuan University, China (2013-2016), and a Visiting Fellow at London South Bank University, UK (2014-present). He also served as an External Examiner (Reviewer) of the MPharm Program at University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, UK (2013-2017) and a PhD external examiner at Manchester Metropolitan University (2014). Dr. Fethi Filali is the Director of Technology & Research at Qatar Mobility Innovations Center (QMIC). He is leading the development of innovating and applied technologies in the areas of artificial intelligence, geospatial data analytics, embedded sensing, scalable and distributed algorithms, as well as communication systems and protocols. He has invented technologies that have been shipped in QMIC products in the domains of smart cities, connected & automated mobility, internet of things, intelligent transportation systems, and security & defense, resulting in a commercial impact in the millions of dollars. Dr. Filali received his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Habilitation degrees from the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, France, in 2002 and 2008, respectively. Prior to joining QMIC in 2010, Dr. Filali was with the Mobile Communications department of EURECOM, France, as Assistant then Associate Professor for 8 years. His research grants include 17 competitive awards from several funding agencies (European Commission, The French National Research Agency, and Qatar National Research Fund). He was the Ph.D. Director of ten Ph.D. students in the area of intelligent transportation, wireless sensor and mesh networks, vehicular communications, big data analytics, internet of things, and mobility management. Dr. Filali co-authored more than 130 research papers in international peer-reviewed conferences and journals and (co-)filed more than 10 patent applications.
