<div><p>The City of Boise is looking for a motivated, community-minded individual to join our Code Compliance team. This is a great opportunity for someone interested in the fields of code compliance, public safety, or criminal justice who is ready to learn through hands-on training. In this role, you&rsquo;ll spend much of your time out in the community, investigating potential violations, educating the public about city codes, and helping keep Boise a safe and welcoming place to live and work. <div><h2 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>Essential Functions</b></h2></div>
<div><p>Performs routine or repetitive tasks with specific instructions and set procedures. Handles basic issues and problems and refers more complex issues to higher-level staff.<br>
<br>
Conducts routine investigations by independently inspecting business sites, properties and/or individuals. Interacts with others to gain code compliance and cooperation. Explains findings, resolutions and investigation outcomes. Engages with the community as an ambassador and educator regarding city codes, policies and procedures. Explains occupational hazards and standard safety practices related to code compliance.<br>

Generates and maintains accurate documentation to support the city's position in a court of law. Researches all relevant databases in support of enforcement actions. With guidance from a senior officer, issues written Notices of Violation, Notices to Abate, Stop Work Orders and misdemeanor citations. Partners with a senior officer and an assigned prosecuting attorney to attend hearings and testify in court or jury trials.<br>

Reviews applications, conducts criminal background investigations through federal and state law enforcement agencies. Assists in determining whether to issue or deny licenses based on code requirements. Prepares documentation of enforcement actions.<br>

Investigates potential violations of city code. Gathers evidence, researches records and interviews witnesses. Initiates the city's abatement process for nuisances. Organizes work and sets priorities to meet critical deadlines. Assists with assessing and interpreting applicable city codes.<br>
<br>
Coordinates with various city or outside agencies or contractors to solicit assistance or guidance in developing solutions for code violations, abatement and business licensing issues.<br>

<b>Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training</b><br>
Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, psychology or a related field.<br>
<br>
Completion of a Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) Academy, a Field Training Program and one or more years of law enforcement experience.<br>
<br>
Code enforcement certification from the American Association of Code Enforcement (AACE).<br>
<br>
Prior experience in code enforcement, business license enforcement or planning and zoning.<br>
<br>

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
<br>Performs routine tasks and assists others in more complex tasks.Handles criminal cases in court. Represents the City of Boise at all levels of the criminal process, including arraignments, pre-trial conferences, motion hearings, bench and jury trials, post sentencing hearings and appeals. Handles a significant number of misdemeanor criminal and civil infraction cases. Prepares files and reviews cases, documents, criminal histories, factual reports and applicable laws for all stages of court proceedings. Writes and replies to all relevant motions. Conducts a criminal background check for each defendant, evaluates strengths and weaknesses, and reviews the defendant's driver's license status when necessary. Synthesizes factual reports provided by law enforcement and witnesses. Inspects and redacts evidence in preparation for disclosure. Discloses relevant and legal evidence to the defense parties. Provides sentencing recommendations based on criminal history and the defendant's conduct, develops an offer of settlement and negotiates with defense counsel to reach a joint resolution. Communicates with pro se defendants, defense attorneys, victims, the victim's witness, police officers, judges and clerks in a timely manner. Prepares unresolved cases for trial. Researches and writes memoranda and briefs on various criminal issues. Responds to various defense motions, such as motions to suppress or motions to dismiss, and files preemptive motions on behalf of the city. Responds to inquiries from the general public or stakeholders in the criminal justice system. Assigns tasks to support staff and successive attorneys as part of case preparation.Performs other duties as assigned.
