The City of Boston is expanding access to Generative AI tools and training for City employees. The Department of Innovation and Technology (DoIT) is seeking a part-time Generative AI Research and Evaluation Fellow to support this initiative by providing research support and assisting with training sessions for City employees.</div><div></div><div><br>
This part-time fellowship is structured like an applied research assistantship. The Fellow will support the design of evaluations, survey-based measurement, recurring adoption reporting, and analytic write-ups used by program leadership. The Fellow will work closely with the Director of Research and Evaluation and other stakeholders to support the rollout and training efforts.</div>
Responsibilities:
<ul><li>Support survey design, operations, and data management.</li><li>
Write and maintain SQL queries; clean, validate, document, and join data from multiple sources using R for adoption tracking and evaluation.</li><li>
Produce analytic outputs for internal decision-making, including tables, charts, summary metrics, and appendix-style materials.</li><li>
Support evaluation methodology and internal communications by drafting memos, documentation, and participating in regular check-ins and working sessions.</li><li>
Support training sessions for City employees and assist in developing related training materials.</li><li>
Performs other related duties as required.</li></ul><p><b>
Professional Development and Supervision:</b></p><ul><li>
The Fellow will receive close supervision from the Director of Research and Evaluation, including regular check-ins, feedback on analytic work products, and guidance on research documentation and internal writing.</li><li>
Work closely with staff across multiple City departments, gaining exposure to cross-departmental collaboration and applied policy work.</li><li>
The role provides exposure to applied evaluation work in government, including survey operations, rollout measurement, and communicating results to decision-makers.</li></ul>
Minimum Entrance Qualifications:
<ul><li>A bachelor's degree in economics, political science, public policy, urban planning, or a related field is preferred.</li><li>
Experience writing SQL for analysis.</li><li>
Experience cleaning and analyzing real-world datasets using R.</li><li>
Familiarity with survey-based data and basic survey operations (<i>SurveyCTO </i>is preferred).</li><li>
Understanding of evaluation or applied research methods, with interest in experimental or quasi-experimental work.</li><li>
Strong writing skills and the ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical audiences.</li><li>
Interest in public service and using data to improve City operations and resident outcomes.</li></ul><p><b>

Generative AI Research and Evaluation Fellow (Grant Funded)

<b>Overview:</b> We are an organization of dedicated professionals committed to serving the community by protecting life, property, and the environment through prevention, education, emergency medical services, civil defense, and fire services. The Boston Fire Teen Academy aims to introduce youth between the ages of 14 and 18 to careers in the fire department.

Established in 2017, the core principles of the program are leadership, integrity, responsibility, respect, confidence, and teamwork. For public safety, we target underrepresented communities within Boston, including people of color and women, while the program remains open to all BPS/Boston residents. Each summer, we aim to host 40-50 teens. Led by firefighter mentors, we work with teens to promote health and wellness while introducing them to the work of the fire department.

Additionally, professionals from various other trades and industries come to share their expertise, amplifying the core principles and relating them to life skills and career preparation. Past presenters have included entrepreneurs discussing how to start a business, local tradespeople like electricians and plumbers, admissions representatives offering college preparation tips, and financial advisors talking about financial literacy and responsibility. Human resources professionals also share information on resumes and interviews. Through presentations, field trips, experiential learning, and CPR training, teens gain a solid foundation, building life skills and transferable skills that will open doors to successful opportunities in their future Key Duties and Responsibilities: - Participate in daily physical training (PT) to maintain physical fitness and meet program requirements.

<li>Observe workshops and actively take notes during presentations to enhance learning. - Engage in conversations and contribute to discussions during workshops to promote an interactive learning environment. - Present during group assignments and participate in small breakout sessions, showcasing teamwork and communication skills. - Participate in group activities to foster collaboration and develop leadership skills.</li>

<b>The Ideal Candidate for this Job:</b> - Interest in public safety with a specific interest in becoming a firefighter or first responder. - Interest in participating in physical activities, including calisthenics, running, push-ups, etc. - Good communication skills or a strong interest in improving communication skills. - Interest in being part of a team environment, with the desire to be a good leader and/or teammate.
