The Law Department is seeking a Criminal Justice Administrative Assistant I to join their team in the Prosecutor's Office, which handles the prosecution of misdemeanor crimes committed in Phoenix.</p><p>
The Criminal Justice Administrative Assistant I role is an essential part of the Criminal Justice and Victim Services processes within the Prosecutor's Office. This role is responsible for handling a variety of administrative duties which may include:</p><ul><li>
Investigating business processes.</li><li>
Developing new/improved processes/systems, procedures, and forms.</li><li>
Performing statistical analyses.</li><li>
Studying administrative problems. Interacting with other criminal justice agencies to gather evidence and investigate evidentiary problems.</li><li>
Redacting information from documents, and audio/video recordings.</li><li>
Supervising and training clerical or technical personnel in a work environment where a high volume of cases are processed and with a variety of tasks to complete.</li><li>
Researching and responding to requests/complaints by the public/victims of crimes.</li><li>
Escorting victims of crime to court, and performing special projects assigned by supervisors.</li></ul><p>
The current vacancy is in the Legal Clerk Unit; however, this recruitment may also be used to fill future vacancies in any of the following support staff units within the Prosecutor's Office: Diversion Unit, Legal Clerk Unit, Legal Assistant Unit, and Victim Services Unit.</p><p>
Diversion Unit</p><p>
The Diversion Unit facilitates the administration of programs offered to eligible defendants as an alternative to criminal convictions. The primary goal of these programs is to educate, rehabilitate, and prevent reoffending while offering defendants the chance to avoid a criminal conviction. The Unit solicits and maintains contracts with community partners and monitors the daily compliance of participants.</p><p>
Legal Clerk Unit</p><p>
The Legal Clerk Unit prepares electronic cases files and provides clerical support to criminal staff attorneys. Additional responsibilities may include ordering and obtaining police reports and evidence, daily docket preparation, data entry into the electronic case management system, ProsecutorByKarpel, contacting witnesses and subpoenaing for trial.</p><p>
Legal Assistant Unit</p><p>
The Legal Assistant Unit collaborates with criminal staff attorneys to prepare a case by conducting legal research, obtaining facts or evidence needed, and researching the criminal history of defendants, redacting protected Victim or Criminal Justice information, allowing the Prosecutor to present this information at sentencing to the court.</p><p>
Victim Services Unit</p><p>
The Victim Services Unit performs both critical and/or legally mandated functions related to victims' rights such as sending victim notification letters, ensuring victims have court escorts, and ensuring that emergency services are available and provided to victims.</p><p>
Work in these Units requires the use of initiative and judgment and is performed under the general direction of an Administrative Assistant II, Management Assistant II, or a department head.</p><p>
This position may be eligible for hybrid teleworking options, following the completion of an initial training period, implemented at the discretion of Department Director.</p>

The Law Department is comprised of two sections: the City Attorney's Office, which handles representing the City in civil matters, and the City Prosecutor's Office, which handles the prosecution of misdemeanor crimes committed in Phoenix. Assistant City Attorneys in the Civil Division of the Law Department work in one of six areas: Public Safety, Litigation, Transportation, Human Resources, City Services, and Community Development.</p><p>
Phoenix voters approved a $500 million General Obligation (GO) Bond Program. The GO Bond programs help to fund critical infrastructure and rehabilitation needs of City facilities such as parks, libraries, fire and police stations, affordable housing, streets and storm drains. Approved projects will be included in the annual Preliminary Capital Improvement Program (CIP) presented to the City Council each spring.</p><p>
The Civil Division is seeking an Assistant City Attorney IV to advise multiple departments on issues related to GO Bond funding for Title 34 construction projects throughout the city. The attorney in this role will be expected to research, analyze, and provide advice on construction projects that may affect one department or multiple departments; and research, analyze, and prepare GO bond funding agreements that are Title 34 compliant.</p><p>
Generally, Assistant City Attorneys review, negotiate, and draft contracts and participate in other transactional work; provide client support; defend litigation; engage in government law practice; and handle all legal matters of the assigned client department. They are expected to perform difficult professional and administrative legal work, including revisions to the Phoenix City Code, and to consult with client decision makers regarding relevant legal issues. These attorneys may also be required to staff public meetings and represent the City during administrative hearings or court proceedings. Assistant City Attorneys report to an Assistant Chief Counsel and generally work independently in performing their duties. All attorneys in the Law Department are assigned and may be reassigned based on the best interests of the City, as determined by the City Attorney.</p><p>
This position is eligible for up to 4 days a week of remote telework, with one in-office day per week for meeting with your section, implemented at the discretion of the City Attorney. Attorneys are expected to meet the needs of the City, including handling all court obligations, city council or city management meetings, and other in-office obligations.</p><p>
The Law Department may consider the opportunity to underfill this position with candidates who require additional experience to meet the qualifications of the Attorney IV classification. Responsibilities of underfill candidates increase, and assignments may become more complex as training and experience progress. The Attorney III underfill may be non-competitively promoted to the Attorney IV classification once they obtain sufficient experience.</p>
