Working with a leading National Security and Cyber organisation, you will help develop advanced AI and machine learning solutions that support critical national security missions.

Operating within a mature Agile environment, you'll collaborate closely with customers, engineers, researchers and data scientists to solve complex real-world challenges using cutting-edge AI, machine learning and data science techniques.

We have opportunities at all levels from Associate, Senior and Principal levels. Roles can be based in Gloucester, Manchester or London, with hybrid working available (typically 3 days per week on-site).

The Opportunity
As a Senior Data Scientist &amp; Machine Learning Researcher, you will play a key role in the technical leadership, design and delivery of AI and machine learning projects from concept through to deployment.

You'll work within a specialist team of Data Science, AI and Machine Learning experts, driving innovative research, developing advanced solutions and mentoring colleagues across a range of customer and internal R&amp;D programmes.

This position offers the opportunity to contribute to genuinely challenging and impactful projects while helping shape future AI capabilities within the national security domain.

Key Responsibilities
<ul><li>Design, develop and deliver complex machine learning and data science solutions with a high degree of autonomy.
</li><li>Lead technical investigations, research activities and AI/ML development across customer and internal projects.
</li><li>Identify innovative approaches to solving complex technical challenges and contribute to future research directions.
</li><li>Provide technical leadership within project teams and support successful project delivery.
</li><li>Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, stakeholders and customers to define requirements and develop effective technical solutions.
</li><li>Mentor and support junior team members, helping to develop technical capability across the wider team.

</ul>Essential Skills &amp; Experience
<ul><li>Degree (BSc or above) in Data Science, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related discipline.
</li><li>Strong Python development experience, including machine learning frameworks such as Hugging Face, TensorFlow and PyTorch.
</li><li>Proven experience delivering machine learning solutions within commercial, research or government environments.
</li><li>Strong understanding of modern AI/ML techniques across areas such as Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Computer Vision.
</li><li>Experience training, fine-tuning and evaluating machine learning and AI models.
</li><li>Ability to undertake technical research and apply findings to real-world challenges.
</li><li>Experience producing high-quality technical documentation, reports or research publications.
</li><li>Previous experience mentoring team members and providing technical leadership.
</li>
</ul>Desirable Skills &amp; Experience
<ul><li>MSc or PhD with a strong research background.
</li><li>Experience developing and maintaining robust ML pipelines and MLOps practices.
</li><li>Familiarity with version control, containerisation and environment management tools, including Git and Docker.
</li><li>Experience working within Linux environments and using command-line tooling.
</li><li>Experience deploying and scaling AI/ML solutions into production environments.
</li><li>Cloud platform experience, ideally AWS, although Azure or GCP experience is also valuable.
</li><li>Published research in peer-reviewed journals or conferences.
</li><li>Experience writing technical proposals, bids or research funding submissions.

Principal Data Scientist and Machine Learning Researcher (eDV)

<div><div>The Role
We&rsquo;re looking for a Senior Azure Platform Engineer to help design, build and operate secure cloud platforms for complex, high-assurance environments.
You&rsquo;ll be working across Azure infrastructure, Kubernetes, automation, networking and DevOps tooling, helping to deliver reliable, scalable and secure platforms that support critical digital services. This is a hands-on engineering role, but one that also requires technical ownership, strong judgement and the ability to work closely with architects, delivery teams, developers and operational stakeholders.
You&rsquo;ll be joining a collaborative technical team focused on building platforms properly - secure by design, automated where possible, supportable in live service and capable of scaling as requirements evolve.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
<ul><li>Design, build, administer and maintain Azure infrastructure across services including Azure Kubernetes Service, Virtual Machines, Application Gateways, databases, storage and networking.
</li><li>Architect and manage hybrid and multi-cloud connectivity, including site-to-site VPNs, BGP routing, Azure Virtual WAN and hub-and-spoke network configurations.
</li><li>Apply cloud security best practice across Azure environments, including Azure Key Vault, Microsoft Defender for Cloud, Azure RBAC, network segmentation, NSGs and Private Endpoints.
</li><li>Configure, maintain and optimise Kubernetes environments to support secure, scalable and resilient application deployments.
</li><li>Design and build CI/CD pipelines to improve deployment quality, speed and consistency.
</li><li>Support both cloud and on-premise platforms, using automation and Infrastructure as Code to improve reliability, repeatability and maintainability.
</li><li>Implement monitoring, alerting and observability solutions to track platform health, performance and availability.
</li><li>Manage source control, repositories and versioning practices to support effective collaboration and code governance.
</li><li>Drive automation across platform operations, reducing manual intervention and improving service reliability.
</li><li>Provide technical guidance to development and engineering teams on how to use platform services effectively.
</li><li>Support improvements around platform security, scalability, maintainability, supportability and performance.
</li><li>Keep up to date with emerging cloud, platform and DevOps technologies, helping to continuously improve engineering practices.
</li></ul>What We&rsquo;re Looking For
We&rsquo;re looking for someone with strong Azure platform engineering experience, a security-conscious mindset and the ability to take ownership in complex technical environments.
You don&rsquo;t need to tick every box, but we&rsquo;d be particularly interested in experience across:
<ul><li>5+ years&rsquo; experience in Platform Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering, DevOps, Platform Integration or a closely related role.
</li><li>Strong hands-on Azure experience, ideally supported by Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) and Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305) certifications.
</li><li>Deep knowledge of Azure networking, including Virtual WAN, ExpressRoute, VPN Gateways, BGP routing, NSGs and Private Endpoints.
</li><li>Strong Kubernetes experience, including configuration, container orchestration and supporting production-grade deployments.
</li><li>Experience with Terraform and HashiCorp tooling such as Packer and Vault.
</li><li>Strong CI/CD pipeline experience using tools such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD or similar.
</li><li>Good understanding of Git, repository management and modern software delivery workflows.
</li><li>Experience driving automation initiatives that improve operational efficiency, consistency and reliability.
</li><li>Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering, architecture, delivery and operational teams.
</li><li>Good problem-solving ability and the confidence to operate in fast-paced, technically complex environments.
</li><li>Experience with JFrog tooling, such as Artifactory, XRay or Runtime, and/or Coder would be advantageous.
</li><li>Experience with other cloud platforms such as AWS or Google Cloud would also be beneficial.
</li><li>A degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related technical discipline would be useful, although equivalent practical experience is just as valuable.</li></ul></div></div>
