The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is a dynamic state agency with over 4000 employees throughout the State of Texas. The Tort Litigation Division specializes in defending state agencies and employees throughout the state against claims involving personal injuries, including medical malpractice, premises liability, auto accidents and workers&rsquo; compensation. We provide a highly collaborative work environment where lawyers help one another while managing their own dockets as first chair from the initial stages of a case through any appeal. The OAG seeks qualified, self-motivated candidates to manage cases from inception to conclusion, including drafting motions and discovery, appearing at hearings, trying cases, negotiating settlements, and handling appeals, as well as assisting other AAGs.</p><p>

<b>ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS</b><br>
<br>
Assistant Attorney General I:</p><ul><li>
Evaluates and defends against claims made against state agencies under the Texas Tort Claims Act and the Workers&rsquo; Compensation Act at all stages of litigation, including pre-litigation claims, administrative hearings, jury trials in district and county courts, and appellate work; assesses and files claims and suits on behalf of state agencies to recover subrogation interests and property damage claims</li><li>
Reviews medical records, researches appellate decisions and related case law, and drafts summary reports, and legal memorandum</li><li>
Provides legal advice, counsel, and assistance to client state agencies</li><li>
Analyzes complex factual and legal issues and develops evidence through witness interviews, depositions, written discovery and document review</li><li>
Provides excellent customer service</li><li>

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS</b><br>

Assistant Attorney General I:</p><ul><li>
Education: Graduated from an accredited law school with a J.D.</li><li>
Licensed as an attorney by the State of Texas</li><li>
Member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas and eligible to practice law in Texas by start date.</li><li>
Skill in conducting effective legal research and evaluating legal issues</li><li>
Skill in effectively managing a moderately heavy caseload in all stages of development</li><li>
Skill in using a computer for word-processing and data entry/retrieval</li><li>
Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines</li><li>
Skill in effective oral and written communication skills [Writing sample required at time of interview]</li><li>
Skill in exercising sound judgment and effective decision making</li><li>

</p><p>The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State&rsquo;s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland&rsquo;s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.</p><p>
The OAG is seeking a motivated, dedicated, and exceptionally strong writer to join the Communications Division as a Speechwriting and Strategic Messaging Intern this summer.</p><p>
This internship offers a rare opportunity to contribute to high-impact written communications in one of Maryland's most active and consequential public offices. The Communications Division supports the Attorney General across a wide range of legal, policy, and public affairs matters.</p><p>
The work is meaningful, the pace is demanding, and so is the potential to contribute to consequential public service, hands on, in moments that matter for Maryland and the nation.</p><p>

Key Responsibilities
</b></p><ul><li>Draft, edit, and refine speeches, talking points, and prepared remarks for agency leadership.</li><li>

Write for newsletters, public statements, internal announcements, and other communications as needed.</li><li>
Collaborate with subject-matter experts to ensure accuracy, consistency, and appropriate tone.</li><li>
