Democratizing security information is essential. As part of our business, we provide ongoing informational support through blogs, whitepapers, newsletters, meetups, and open-source tools. The more the community understands security, the more they&rsquo;ll understand why a company like ours is so unique and valuable.
Role
Trail of Bits is looking for a Senior Technical Content Editor who operates at the intersection of technical editing and marketing content production. This hybrid role directly supports two critical functions: maintaining the quality and velocity of our security report pipeline, and producing marketing content that amplifies our research, tools, and thought leadership.
You will partner with the Lead Technical Editor on report editing, blog production, and content quality assurance, and work with the Technical Marketing Manager on campaigns, social content, and co-marketing efforts. The split will flex based on business needs, but expect roughly a 60% focus on technical editing and 40% on marketing content, shifting toward 50/50 as the team scales.
What makes this role distinct is the audience. The security research community reads our blog posts, uses our open-source tools, and attends our talks. They notice when content misses the mark technically. You need enough technical fluency that your editing holds up to scrutiny from security engineers, and enough marketing instinct to know how to package research for the audiences that matter.
You are a proactive storyteller, not just a reactive editor. You are the person who sees an engineer's tool release, a conference talk abstract, or an internal Slack thread and recognizes the story before anyone asks for coverage. You work directly with engineering directors to extract stories and content from their teams, lightening their load while ensuring nothing ships without coverage.
Trail of Bits is an AI-native company. Every team uses Claude Code. We have built a suite of Claude-based content creation and editing tools that automate style enforcement and technical verification. You will use and improve these tools daily, and you will be expected to build new ones as editorial needs evolve.
What You&rsquo;ll Achieve
Technical Editing and Content Quality<ul><li>
Edit security reports across application security, blockchain, cryptography, AI/ML, and research &amp; engineering engagements. Ensure technical accuracy, clarity, and adherence to Trail of Bits style standards.</li><li>
Develop, edit, and publish posts on the Trail of Bits blog, the primary channel for our research and thought leadership.</li><li>
Manage publication through GitHub pull requests and coordinate with internal and external reviewers.</li><li>
Manage the team's report tracker and quality metrics systems, giving leadership visibility into editing throughput, revision cycles, and delivery timelines.</li><li>
Build and refine Claude-based tools for content creation and editorial refinement, freeing the team to focus on higher-value work.</li><li>
Lead document design beyond reports: SOWs, proposals, engineer bios, program overviews, QBR materials, case studies, and testimonials.</li><li>
Shape editorial standards and style guide evolution. Your judgment influences how the team writes.</li></ul>
Marketing Content and Amplification<ul><li>
Identify and produce marketing content proactively: blog posts, case studies, social threads, newsletter sections, and event collateral. You find the story, pitch it, write it, and ship it.</li><li>
Own the content calendar in coordination with the Technical Marketing Manager and Lead Technical Editor. Ensure steady publishing cadence and cross-practice coverage. Make the editorial calls on what gets published when.</li><li>
Create and publish social media content across X, LinkedIn, Bluesky, and Telegram. Drive community engagement and campaign execution.</li><li>
Lead proactive story extraction: interview engineers, capture transcripts, and develop drafts from research and tool releases that would otherwise go unpublished.</li><li>
Work directly with engineering directors to understand their roadmaps and extract content from their teams. You lighten their load by being the person who turns engineering output into published work.</li><li>
Write and edit content for demand generation campaigns, email sequences, webinar materials, and conference activations.</li><li>
Maintain and grow the newsletter pipeline with content curation, section drafts, and repurposed content.</li><li>
Elevate the writing and communication of team members across GTM and engineering. Help engineers and sales leads produce clearer briefs, better talks, and shareable content.</li></ul>
What You&rsquo;ll Bring<ul><li>
Strong editorial skills. Grammar, mechanics, and style are second nature to you. You&rsquo;re comfortable working at every level of editing, from line-level edits to structural reorganization, and you&rsquo;ve edited against both in-house and standard style guides (Chicago and/or AP).</li><li>
Technical content experience. You have edited technical content for accuracy, clarity, and concision in cybersecurity or another technical field. You have experience partnering with subject matter experts to draw out and shape content. You can handle edits for a 40-page security report and a technical blog post in the same day.</li><li>
Technical fluency and resourcefulness. A baseline level of cybersecurity knowledge is very helpful in this role, but you don&rsquo;t need to know everything about smart contract vulnerabilities or AI red-teaming methodology. You do need to know how to research your way to an answer, when to loop in a technical expert, and how to improve the narrative without changing the technical meaning. You respect engineers&rsquo; time and come to them with focused questions, not open-ended ones.</li><li>
Proactive story instincts. You don't wait for engineers to hand you a brief. You monitor tool releases, conference talk abstracts, internal channels, and industry news to find stories worth telling. You bring the pitch, not just the polish.</li><li>
Writing ability. You produce original content, not just polish other people's work. You write blog posts, case studies, and social threads for both deeply technical and business audiences.</li><li>
Content marketing awareness. You understand how content drives pipeline. You have worked on campaigns, managed content calendars, or produced marketing assets in a technical B2B environment.</li><li>
Tool proficiency. You&rsquo;re comfortable in developer-adjacent workflows: GitHub, Hugo, Slack, markdown, and AI-assisted editing tools like Claude. You have experience building or using automation to speed up editorial workflows.</li><li>
Ownership and independence. You operate with minimal direction. You bring your own editorial judgment to the work and can defend your choices to engineers and leadership.</li></ul>
Nice to Have
These are not requirements for day one, but they represent areas where this role can grow.<ul><li>
Experience with InDesign or equivalent design tools for document layout and visual materials</li><li>
Background in content production for cybersecurity, developer tools, or another technical discipline</li><li>
Familiarity with HubSpot or similar marketing automation platforms</li><li>
Experience structuring web content for AI discoverability and agent-ready evaluation</li><li>
Prior work in a professional services, consultancy, or audit firm environment</li><li>
Experience with editorial operations at scale: style guides, contributor guidelines, submission checklists</li></ul>
What Won't Work Here<ul><li>
Editing without understanding. Our reports contain deeply technical findings. We don't expect you to arrive knowing every vulnerability class, but we do expect you to research what you don't know, ask the right questions, and never make a change you can't justify.</li><li>
Treating marketing as secondary. This is a hybrid role, not a TE role with occasional marketing tasks. When the content calendar needs a blog post or a campaign needs collateral, you shift into marketing mode fully.</li><li>
Waiting for assignments. Engineers ship tools, give talks, and publish research constantly. At this level, you are the person who is already tracking it and building content around it before anyone asks.</li><li>
Working in isolation. This role sits between two teams and works with engineers, PMs, sales, and leadership. If you prefer heads-down solo work with minimal collaboration, this is not the right fit.</li></ul>

Trail of Bits produces some of the most respected security research in the industry. We ship open-source tools the community relies on, publish work that changes how organizations think about risk, and take on engagements other firms cannot. The gap is not in the work. It is in how much of that work reaches the people who should see it.
Our goals for Technical Editing are to transform the function from reactive editing support into a strategic storytelling engine: extracting untold stories from engineers, automating mechanical work through AI, expanding document design across all client touchpoints, and enabling engineers to produce publication-ready content independently. We are targeting 80+ blog posts published per year, with at least half of TE capacity allocated to strategic work and a growing share of capacity serving non-assurance functions company-wide. 
Reporting Manager: Lead Technical Editor
The base salary range for this position is $120,000 to $150,000 for U.S.-based candidates, commensurate with experience and geographic location. This targets a hire with deep experience in both editorial leadership and content marketing who can operate independently from the start and take on strategic work immediately.
