<li>A typical shift is from 6:00am to 4:00pm but 12+ hour shifts are common. Red Flag Warning periods may require you to work up to a 72-hour shift.</li>

Physical: Candidates must successfully complete a physical fitness assessment consisting of either a 1.5-mile run (men: 13:30 or less; women: 15:00 or less) or a 3-mile run (men: 28:00 or less; women: 32:00 or less). Additional minimum standards include push-ups (men: 25 or more; women: 15 or more), pull-ups (men: 5 or more; women: 2 or more), and a plank hold (men: 1 minute 30 seconds; women: 1 minute 15 seconds). These values represent minimum thresholds; however, due to a cumulative scoring system, candidates must exceed the minimum standard in at least one event. Meeting only the minimum in all events will not satisfy the overall requirement. Working Conditions: Wildland firefighting is inherently hazardous and often creates stressful working conditions. Work is performed outdoors for extended periods of time in hot or cold temperatures, and inclement weather. Work exposes the employee to hazardous conditions that include high noise levels, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation. Furthermore, work exposes the employee to possible bodily injury and/or life-threatening conditions from extreme temperatures, moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, machinery, falling trees, rolling rocks, and treacherous terrain. Other hazards include exposure to wildlife and allergenic plants and insects. Work requires use of personal protective equipment such as dust masks, eye protection, hard hats, ear protection, fire resistant Nomex clothing, and gloves that are employer provided, to mitigate some of the hazards. Employees must provide their own work boots that meet NFPA 1977 (leather, lace up, eight inch high, lug sole).

Working Environment: The Fire Management Program works directly for the Boulder County Sheriff, who is the Fire Warden for the County. Fire Management acts as the subject-matter-experts to the Sheriff for wildfire suppression, prescribed burning, fire restriction implementation, and education. Fire Management has the delegated authority to act as the Fire Warden on behalf of the Sheriff. This is NOT a law enforcement position. The Fire Management Program is responsible for suppression of forest and prairie fires on unincorporated public lands within the 740sq mi of Boulder County, including but not limited to, over 100,000 acres of County Open Space and Land Easements, and a heavily intermixed wildland urban interface (WUI). Fire Management also closely assists local, volunteer fire protection districts, full-time fire departments, US Forest Service, and National Park Service with fire suppression and prescribed fire needs.<br>

Numerous municipalities exist within Boulder County, including the City of Boulder, Longmont, Louisville, and Nederland. It is also home to the University of Colorado at Boulder. The county is a major tourist and recreational attraction for the Denver Metro area and encompasses a portion of Rocky Mountain National Park, in addition to Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, and 45,000 acres City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks.<br>

Wildland Firefighters participate in fire assignments locally, regionally, and nationally. Overtime and travel are required. It is also expected that individuals will take part in fire assignments with the Shadow Canyon Interagency Type Two Initial Attack Hand Crew and/or be available for Type 6 fire engine assignments locally and nationally.<br>

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):</b><br>
The knowledge, skills and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and developed skills equivalent to graduation from a 2-year technical trade school and several years (2-4) working in fire logistical support warehousing and inventorying or the trade field of carpentry, plumbing, electrical and mechanics.</p><p><b>
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:</b><br>
Incumbent must have a working knowledge of warehousing, specialized equipment and inventory systems; ability to maintain manual and computerized records and prepare reports.</p><p>
Ability to operate heavy equipment, various fire vehicles, and vehicles hauling and transferring hazardous materials. Ability to operate specialized firefighting equipment and be able to draft specifications for ordering specialized equipment. Additionally, required to have knowledge of hiring and contracting specialized fire equipment and vehicles for use by the State of Montana and interagency cooperators.</p><p>
Knowledge of wildland fire size-up, strategy, tactical methods, fire behavior, principles of safety, National Incident Command System, CPR, First Aid, hazard materials handling, fire business management, fire equipment and methods used in wildland and wildland/urban interface fire control. Ability to work with a minimum of supervision and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.</p><p>
Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise several concurrent projects, including setting priorities during projects and fire assignments.<br>

<b>Special Requirements:</b><br>
Essential functions occur in both office and field settings. Field work involves exposure to varying weather conditions, terrain, and road conditions; travel in mountainous terrain by vehicle or on foot; and walking up and down hills. Wildland fire-suppression support involves exposure to smoke, dust, and related fire hazards and low-level flight in helicopters over mountainous terrain. Overnight travel and staying onsite is required. Completion of the NWCG walk test is required, and the arduous pack test is encouraged.</p><p>
This position will require repetitive lifting of objects more than 45 pounds in weight to facilitate unit logistics support. Items lifted may include cubies (5-gallon drinking water cubes), 5-gallon jerry cans, water pumps, fire hoses, and other equipment.</p><p><b>

The position of Fuels Crew Member- on the Libby Unit is based in Libby, MT. The position is responsible for the safe and effective implementation of fuels projects, GNA/Trust Lands projects, community preparedness, and fire suppression programs within the assigned area of responsibility. Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):</b><br>
This position requires a high school diploma and the ability to attain Firefighter Type 2 and Faller 3 certification upon hire.</p><p><b>
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:</b><br>
It is critical that the incumbent possesses skills and abilities in effective communication, both orally and written. Requires knowledge of the principles and practices of Wildland Firefighting; emergency management; natural resources; adult education and training; and fire management including suppression, protection, and prevention. Requires knowledge of State and Federal fire protection and natural resources laws including the Departments legal responsibilities to personnel, cooperative personnel, and volunteers; wildfire and structural fire protection techniques relating to WUI; volunteer group organization and management; local government organization, jurisdiction and authorities; equipment management and maintenance; fire budgeting, billing and auditing methods and procedures; communication systems; safety management methods and procedures. The position also requires knowledge of supervisory principles and practices, DNRC and State personnel policies, procedures, and precedents, organizational structures, employment law, and program requirements.</p><p>
This position will require annual completion of an arduous Wildland Fire Work Capacity Test which includes walking three miles over level ground, with a 45lb. pack in no more than 45 minutes.</p><p>
Position requires incumbent to maintain a valid Driver&rsquo;s License.</p><p>
Requires the ability to coordinate extensive and complex amounts of personnel and equipment to meet the needs of fire suppression and support forces during fire actions on multiple jurisdictions; the ability to make independent decisions with minimal supervision, to express views and provide clear direction both in writing and through verbal communications; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, government officials, and agency employees. Communications and decisions are frequently conducted under duress and with fire personnel having different backgrounds and management priorities.</p><p><b><br>
