Position Title: Groundman

Essential Functions:

The Groundman assists line crew or network crew members by working on the ground, handing tools and heavy materials to workers. The groundman will dig holes and pad ditches, and perform other similar work in connection with the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground power lines.

<li>Groundmen are never permitted to work on energized conductors without direct/immediate supervision at all times.</li>
<li>A Groundman is also responsible for his/her own safety at all times and is expected to learn and follow all company guidelines and safety procedures.</li>
<li>It is the responsibility of the groundman to report any and all accidents to the Foreman immediately and to make the Foreman aware of any known potential safety hazards that may exist.</li>
<li>Safety should be the number one priority of any groundman and ensure the safety of his fellow crew members by following all safety guidelines</li>
</ul>
Roles and Responsibilities:
<ul>
<li>Passes tools to line crew or network crew members by acting as a general helper on the ground. Handles cables, conduit and other materials as directed. Glues conduits together. Assists in setting transformers.</li>
<li>Assists line crew with setting poles by shoveling or piking; fills anchor holes.</li>
<li>Clears undergrowth from right-of-way by using hand tools or saws. Piles debris clear path.</li>
<li>Performs general clean-up of job sites following completion of work.</li>
<li>Positions reels of electric cable beside trenches and lays heavy residential underground distribution (URD) cables in ditches and pads by shoveling fine sand around cable.</li>
<li>Assists network crew top man with lowering and raising molten metals and other heavy materials to the cable splicer working below in the vault.</li>
<li>Operates roto hammer to access vaults.</li>
<li>Notifies customers of impending disruption of service while lines are under repair.</li>
<li>Flags traffic to protect employees and the public from injury.</li>
<li>May assist as directed in operating jackhammer or digging bars to break concrete or rocks.</li>
<li>May drive 3/4-ton or 1-ton pickup truck to job site or to obtain supplies.</li>
<li>Performs other duties as assigned. Job duties are subject to change as directed by management</li>

<li>Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under adverse climatic conditions.</li>
<li>Ability to lift up to 80 lbs multiple times during a work shift</li>
<li>Ability to climb, dig, work in tight spaces, on uneven surfaces, walking, stooping, and kneeling</li>
<li>Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions</li>
<li>Ability to work well independently and as a part of a team with co-workers</li>
<li>Ability to pass motor vehicle, criminal background check, and comply with drug-free workplace policy</li>
<li>Willingness and ability to learn additional skills</li>
</ul>
Experience and Education:
<ul>
<li>Electricity Training Preferred</li>
<li>One (1) year of experience in a labor-intensive environment</li>
</ul>
Additional Requirements/Licenses/Certifications:
<ul>
<li>Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid State of Residence Class A CDL License is required.</li>
<li>Candidates must pass criminal and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) background checks and pass a pre-employment drug screen.</li>
<li>Must complete OSHA 10hr Safety Training Program within 60 days, other combinations of education / experience may be considered.</li>
<li>Must have ability for frequent travel on needed training requirements and potential for overtime including storm work.</li>
<li>Physical capabilities required to safely operate a motor vehicle and equipment, in all driving conditions.</li>
<li>Possesses sight, strength and coordination necessary to safely and effectively operate heavy and light equipment and tools.</li>
<li>Duties entail full body exertion, strenuous lifting, carrying, pushing an pulling.</li>
