Senior Software Controls Engineer</h4><div>
You will join Actemium Automation Warrington to lead development of control and automation software for industrial systems. This is a hands-on engineering role combining software design, PLC/SCADA integration, and technical leadership. You&rsquo;ll work with project teams, clients and suppliers to deliver robust, maintainable control solutions that meet functional and safety requirements.</div><h4 class="jobSectionHeader">
Key Responsibilities</h4><ul><li>
Lead software design and development for PLCs (Siemens, Rockwell or equivalent), SCADA/HMI systems.</li><li>
Develop software architecture, standards and reusable libraries to improve quality and delivery speed.</li><li>
Author and maintain technical documentation including functional specifications, software design documents, test plans and FAT/SAT procedures.</li><li>
Implement and execute unit, integration and system tests; support factory acceptance testing and site commissioning.</li><li>
Work closely with project managers, control engineers, mechanical and electrical teams to ensure successful project delivery.</li><li>
Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior control engineers and developers.</li><li>
Drive continuous improvement of engineering practices, code review and configuration management processes.</li><li>
Engage with clients on technical issues, present solutions and respond to site queries during commissioning and handover.</li></ul><h4 class="jobSectionHeader">
What You&rsquo;ll Bring</h4><ul><li>
Proven experience in control software engineering (minimum 7 years preferred) with PLC and SCADA/HMI systems.</li><li>
Strong programming skills in ladder, structured text and scripting languages; experience with Siemens TIA Portal, Rockwell Studio 5000, or similar.</li><li>
Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, Modbus, OPC/UA).</li><li>
Practical understanding of control system commissioning, diagnostics and resolving on-site issues.</li><li>
Good documentation skills and experience producing technical specifications and test procedures.</li><li>
Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail and a methodical approach to testing and validation.</li><li>
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and clients.</li><li>
Relevant engineering qualification (HNC, HND, BEng or equivalent) or demonstrable industry experience.</li><li>
Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to client sites for commissioning and support.</li></ul><h4 class="jobSectionHeader">

Summary
Actemium Automation Peterborough is seeking a proactive and technically adept Software Controls Systems Engineer to join our control system software team. The role involves developing, commissioning and supporting control system software integration for industrial automation projects across multiple sectors. You will collaborate with project managers, control system hardware engineers, suppliers and customers to develop, implement and test PLC, HMI and SCADA solutions that meet project requirements, safety standards and client expectations.
Key Responsibilities<ul><li>
Develop clear, maintainable and well‑documented control system software (PLC, HMI, SCADA etc) using industry standard platforms (e.g. Allen‑Bradley, Siemens).</li><li>
On-site commissioning, integration and testing of control systems, in line with safety and site regulations.</li><li>
Create and review control system documentation (e.g. functional design specifications).</li><li>
Lead and participate in factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT).</li><li>
Collaborate with multiple departments and team members to ensure projects are delivered on time, in budget and to agreed specifications.</li><li>
Provide technical support, troubleshooting and remote diagnostics of control system software.</li><li>
Ensure all software and documentation comply with company SHEQ procedures, project specifications and industry best practice.</li><li>
Contribute to continuous improvement, standardisation of control libraries, templates and reusable code assets.</li><li>
Coach and mentor junior members of the software team.</li><li>
Attend client meetings and site visits as required, maintaining professional communication and accurate project records.</li></ul>
About You<ul><li>
Proven experience in developing and commissioning control system software.</li><li>
Practical knowledge of one or more PLC and SCADA platforms, ideally one being Rockwell Automation control systems.</li><li>
Competent in producing control system documentation.</li><li>
Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex software and integration issues.</li><li>
Organised and detail‑focused, able to manage multiple tasks and meet tight project deadlines.</li><li>
Good communicator, comfortable working collaboratively with multi‑disciplined teams, clients and suppliers.</li><li>
Familiarity with relevant standards and safe systems of work for industrial control systems.</li><li>
Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to customer sites and supplier facilities, with a large percentage of the on-site activities requiring international travel.</li></ul>
Qualifications &amp; Experience<ul><li>
HNC/HND, degree or equivalent qualification in electrical, control systems, software engineering or a related discipline, desirable.</li><li>
Experience in control system software development, commissioning and testing.</li><li>
Experience working within SHEQ frameworks and following documented procedures.</li><li>
Manufacturer or platform specific training and certifications, desirable.</li></ul>
