We are seeking a full-time, on-site Senior Software Engineer to join our team in Warren, RI. This role is responsible for leading the development, maintenance, and support of software systems that drive our environmental monitoring products. Reporting directly to the Technical Manager, this position requires a proactive, self-directed engineer who can manage a wide range of responsibilities while collaborating across disciplines.
The ideal candidate is comfortable working closely with engineering, production, and field service teams and takes pride in delivering practical, reliable, and well-documented software that performs in the real world.
Key Responsibilities<ul><li>
Lead the design and architecture of scalable, robust, and secure software systems</li><li>
Make high-level technical decisions and guide the selection of technologies, frameworks, and platforms</li><li>
Break down complex projects into manageable tasks and oversee technical delivery</li><li>
Design, develop, and maintain software solutions that support system control, data acquisition, and communications across our product lines</li><li>
Collaborate with technical teams to understand product requirements and translate them into scalable, supportable code</li><li>
Write clean, well-documented code with attention to long-term maintainability and version control</li><li>
Troubleshoot and resolve bugs across the software stack, including occasional support for field-deployed systems</li><li>
Develop tools for internal use that improve system integration, testing, and diagnostics</li><li>
Support product testing, release cycles, and deployment coordination</li><li>
Ensure compatibility across hardware interfaces and embedded systems</li><li>
Maintain detailed technical documentation for internal and customer-facing applications</li><li>
Contribute to continuous improvement of software processes, tools, and quality standards</li></ul>
Required Qualifications<ul><li>
Bachelor&rsquo;s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience.</li><li>
Minimum of 5 years of professional software development experience.</li><li>
Must be Proficient in C, C#, and C++ with proven ability to write efficient, reliable, and maintainable code.</li><li>
Must have Experience with APIs, serial communication, data logging, and Linux environments.</li><li>
Knowledge of Python and JavaScript is a plus.</li><li>
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.</li><li>
Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach.</li></ul>
Preferred Qualifications<ul><li>
5-7 years of relevant software development experience</li><li>
Experience developing software for scientific instrumentation or sensor-based systems a plus</li><li>
Understanding of networked devices, data protocols, and embedded system interaction</li><li>
Interest in environmental monitoring, sustainability, or public health technology</li></ul>

About the Role
We are seeking an innovative and driven R&amp;D PhD Engineer (must currently hold a PhD) to join our advanced development team focused on creating the next generation of environmental monitoring instruments. This role is ideal for a highly skilled engineer who thrives on solving complex technical challenges, driving research initiatives, and transforming novel concepts into reliable, field-ready solutions. You will lead and collaborate on high-impact projects that merge mechanical, electrical, and environmental engineering to deliver groundbreaking products that support public health and environmental sustainability.
Key Responsibilities<ul><li>Lead research initiatives to develop new technologies, materials, and methodologies for advanced air monitoring systems</li><li>Design, build, and optimize experimental setups, prototypes, and test rigs to validate novel concepts</li><li>Integrate multi-disciplinary technologies, including sensors, embedded systems, and advanced data acquisition platforms, into scalable product solutions</li><li>Perform data modeling, algorithm development, and statistical analysis to improve accuracy, reliability, and performance of instrumentation</li><li>Collaborate with cross-functional teams to guide end-to-end product development from concept through commercialization</li><li>Prepare and execute structured test plans, root-cause analysis, and design validation studies</li><li>Contribute to intellectual property development, including patents, technical publications, and innovative process documentation</li><li>Support regulatory compliance efforts, including preparation for EPA, ISO, and other relevant certifications</li><li>Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers and guide best practices in experimental and analytical methods</li><li>Participate in long-term technology roadmapping, providing insight into future trends and emerging capabilities</li></ul>
Qualifications<ul><li>PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Environmental Engineering, or a related field</li><li>5+ years of hands-on R&amp;D experience, preferably in instrumentation, sensor technology, or environmental monitoring systems</li><li>Proven expertise in mechatronics, precision measurement, sensor integration, or fluid and aerosol dynamics</li><li>Proficiency with CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred), PCB design, and programming languages such as MATLAB or Python for data modeling and analysis</li><li>Experience with experimental design, prototyping, and field validation of scientific equipment</li><li>Strong publication record or history of patent contributions is a plus</li><li>Ability to communicate complex technical findings to both engineering teams and non-technical stakeholders</li><li>Highly organized, self-driven, and comfortable leading multiple R&amp;D initiatives simultaneously</li></ul>
