Role Description:
The Animal Legal Defense Fund&rsquo;s Litigation Program files strategic high-impact lawsuits against government agencies, individuals, and industries that exploit animals, including factory farms, puppy mills, and roadside zoos, that seek to expand the protections for animals under the law.
Litigation Fellows in Animal Legal Defense Fund&rsquo;s Litigation Program are responsible for the day-to-day management of their assigned cases and projects, including ensuring the completion of all necessary research, filings, and other aspects of litigation. Litigation Fellows also assist the Litigation Program in developing new cases.
You will report to Senior Staff Attorney (Litigation Program).
How You Will Make a Difference:<ul><li>
Act as counsel under the supervision of a Staff Attorney, Senior Staff Attorney, or Managing Attorney, and be responsible for all research, filings, and other aspects of litigation, for assigned cases and projects. Potentially act as lead counsel where appropriate during second year of fellowship.</li><li>
Develop skills as a litigator, including through participating in motions practice, filings, appearances, and arguments, where appropriate.</li><li>
Research and develop novel legal theories and strategies, as well as fact patterns, for new cases.</li><li>
Manage Law Clerks as assigned.</li><li>
Manage drafting, editing, and submission of amicus curiae briefs on behalf of the Animal Legal Defense Fund.</li><li>
Work with Communications and other departments to answer questions on civil legal issues and procedures, and to propose, draft, proof, and/or edit content on cases and legal developments.</li><li>
Coordinate, as needed, with other programs, including with Criminal Justice Program on cases that have, or could have, both civil and criminal components, Legislative Affairs Program, Animal Law Program, and Pro Bono Programs.</li><li>
Manage pro bono and local counsel on cases with external counsel.</li><li>
Prepare and deliver presentations for professional conferences, fundraising events, etc. when needed.</li><li>
Provide in-house expertise for staff on questions concerning Litigation Program cases, animal law civil cases in general, and legal strategy.</li><li>
Perform other duties as assigned to advance the Litigation Program and the Animal Legal Defense Fund&rsquo;s strategic objectives and mission.</li></ul>
Requirements:

 We Are Looking for Candidates With:<ul><li>
The Litigation Fellowship is designed to afford developmental experiences in strategic impact litigation in the animal protection sphere for individuals that have recently graduated. To be eligible, you must have graduated from law school within three years of the fellowship start date. We also consider applicants who, although not recent graduates from law school, are looking to move from an unrelated legal practice into animal protection work.</li><li>
A Juris Doctorate degree when the fellowship begins and be admitted to practice law in the state where you will reside during your fellowship (or be awaiting bar results on the start date of your fellowship).</li><li>

Strong organizational and prioritization skills and be able to meet deadlines.</li><li>

Clerks are integral members of a program team and work on projects that further the current work of the program and advance the mission and goals of the Animal Legal Defense Fund. Clerks also participate in activities that will allow them to network across the organization with Animal Legal Defense Fund staff and other clerks, and engage them in the mission and goals of the organization.
How You Will Make a Difference: The summer clerkship provides an immersive experience in the Animal Legal Defense Fund&rsquo;s cutting-edge Litigation Program to protect animals and advance their legal interests. Clerks will complete legal and factual research, prepare a variety of written work products, and work with Animal Legal Defense Fund attorneys in developing new civil cases. Clerks will participate in Litigation Program meetings alongside our attorneys and are encouraged to attend hearings, oral arguments, and other events throughout the summer.
Summer clerks in the Litigation Program conduct legal and factual research and draft legal and other documents in furtherance of ALDF&rsquo;s ongoing and developing civil legal matters. Accordingly, Litigation Program summer clerks' workload consists of multiple assignments spanning a variety of animal law issues and areas of law. All clerks and externs will participate in scheduled networking and engagement activities. Externs may have additional requirements depending on their school&rsquo;s externship program.

Dangerous dog designations and breed-specific restrictions</li><li>
Tort law matters and issues of negligence</li><li>

Role Description:
As the HR Director, you will lead the Human Resources function at ALDF, ensuring that our teams are supported through HR programs, that our culture allows team members to thrive, and that our organization is compliant with regulations. You will design, develop, and oversee Initiatives, policies, and procedures; and you will craft and build processes and programs that enhance the full employee experience lifecycle. Compliance and Human Resources Operations<ul><li>
Ensure compliance and appropriate implementation of ALDF&rsquo;s Collective Bargaining Agreement and other deliverables related to labor relations.</li><li>
Establish and maintain HR policies, processes, training, and initiatives that support compliance and strategy needs.</li><li>
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, regulations, and best practices; proactively review, create, and update policies and practices accordingly in an ongoing and timely fashion, and ensure compliance for maintenance and reporting requirements.</li><li>
Develop and implement the HR departmental budget. Partner with Finance on staffing budgets across ALDF. Assist the senior leadership team with the annual overall personnel budget.</li></ul>
Employee Experience<ul><li>
Assess ALDF&rsquo;s benefit offerings and make recommendations on ALDF&rsquo;s benefits selection and total rewards strategy to help ensure the organization&rsquo;s ongoing ability to attract and retain top talent, while balancing cost controls against budgets.</li><li>
Provide timely and accurate administration of HR programs including compensation, benefits, leave, dispute resolution, investigations, performance and talent management, recognition, employee engagement, and training and development.</li><li>
Address and oversee appropriate, respectful handling of all sensitive or confidential employee relations issues, such as complaints, disciplinary actions, and separations, as necessary.</li><li>

Requirements:

We Are Looking for Candidates With:<ul><li>
A bachelor's degree in human resources, business administration, or a related field. In lieu of a bachelor&rsquo;s degree, 5 years of progressive experience in human resources is required. A master&rsquo;s degree is preferred. In lieu of a master&rsquo;s degree, 12 years of progressive responsibility in human resources is required.</li><li>
At least 7 years of broad HR experience in various roles with progressive responsibility including employee relations, talent acquisition, development and management, compensation and benefits.</li><li>
3 years in a formal people leadership role, with a track record of modeling inclusive leadership.</li><li>
3 or more years of labor relations experience is strongly preferred.</li><li>
3 or more years of nonprofit human resources experience is strongly preferred.</li><li>
Current HR certification (SPHR or SHRM-SCP) preferred.</li><li>
Thorough knowledge of U.S. federal and state employment laws and regulations, particularly California employment law.</li><li>
