SUMMARY
The Medical Assistant (MA) assists the Medical Providers (Physician, Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant) within scope of practice. MAs also perform clerical and information technology functions for medical providers in a clinic setting, including primary responsibility for the operation of electronic health records and electronic dictation systems. The MA&rsquo;s primary goal is to increase the efficiency and productivity of the Provider. The CMA must be able to anticipate Provider&rsquo;s needs to facilitate the flow of clinic. The MA must be discreet, tactful, and unobtrusive in performance of duties so as not to distract medical staff from patient care. Good judgment, organizational ability, initiative, attention to detail, and the ability to be self-motivated are especially important. A MA must be adaptable and versatile. Good attendance is an important element of this job.
RESPONSIBILITES<ul><li>
Prepares patient and area for procedures.</li><li>
Patient Intake:<ul><li>
Obtains vital signs (pulse, respiration, blood pressure, temperature).</li><li>
Measures height and weighs patient.</li><li>
Performs vision screening and audiometry screening.</li><li>
Obtains reason for visit to Health Center.</li><li>
Obtains History (immunization, allergies, family, surgery, obstetric/ Gynecological).</li><li>
Obtains specimens using correct collection technique. i.e., urine (clean catch), capillary for glucose, hemoglobin, lead, HA1C, and Cholesterol.
</li></ul></li><li>As directed, assist Provider on patient care examination and treatment procedures.</li><li>
When acting as a Scribe:
<ul><li>Transcribe a history and physical exam, and document accurately the Provider&rsquo;s encounter with the patient and others present.</li><li>
List all proper diagnoses and symptoms as well as follow up instructions and prescriptions as dictated by the Provider.</li><li>
Transcribe patient orders including laboratory and radiology tests, medications, etc.
</li><li>Document any procedures performed by the provider.</li></ul></li><li>
Discharge of patients:<ul><li>
Ask patient if instructions are clear for return visit.</li><li>
Check encounter forms for all required signatures and information.</li><li>
Assist patient to check-out / appointment.</li></ul></li><li>
Daily Tasks:<ul><li>
Open exam rooms:<ul><li>
Check/turn on the otoscope/ophthalmoscopes.</li><li>
Check pelvic equipment/instruments.</li><li>
Check that all appropriate supplies are available.</li></ul></li><li>
Clean exam tables and counter tops.</li><li>
Check and log refrigerator temperatures.</li><li>
Perform quality controls.</li></ul></li><li>
Maintains and enters information on computer system, as well as documentation in patient charts.</li></ul>
Perform other routines and tasks as assigned.
SKILLS<ul><li>
Medical terminology.
</li><li>Recognition of physical exam process and ability to record exam details.
</li><li>Computer proficiency and ability to quickly learn new applications.
</li><li>Legible handwriting and ability to accurately record information.
</li><li>Organizational skills with focus on tracking patient care and improving patient flow.
</li><li>Professional demeanor and recognition of privacy considerations for patients and families.
</li></ul>Other Requirements:
<ul><li>Ability to multi-task efficiently and effectively.
</li><li>Must be able to act calmly and effectively in a busy or stressful situation.
</li><li>Ability to communicate effectively in the English language in person, by phone and in writing.
</li><li>Requires adherence to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for safety, confidentiality, attendance, punctuality and personal appearance.</li><li>
Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers and peers.
</li><li>Assist in training of new staff and students completing externship.</li></ul>
EXPERIENCE &amp; EDUCATION<ul><li>
Education, experience as a Medical Assistant (MA). Prefer one to two years of experience.
</li><li>History working with NextGen software and medical coding training, or certification are preferred but not required.
</li><li>Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.</li></ul>
ORGANIZATIONAL REPORTING
Day-to-day clinical supervision by Provider on duty. Organizational supervision provided by the Site Manager and/or department Supervisor.

Motor Function &amp; Mobility:<ul><li>
Ability to move within the work environment to complete tasks and interact with others.</li><li>
Occasional lifting and carrying of items up to 10 pounds without assistance.</li><li>
Frequent standing, sitting, bending, reaching, and other movements typical of a standard workday.</li><li>
Regular use of hands and fingers for typing, writing, operating tools or equipment, and handling materials.</li><li>
Some pushing and pulling required during daily tasks.</li></ul></li></ul>
