<p><b>Position Summary:</b></p>
<p>The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of routine and complex laboratory procedures using standard and specialized techniques, instrumentation, and equipment on a wide variety of biological specimens to assist the provider in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. To exercise professional judgment to recognize, prioritize, and facilitate varying test requests and workload in an efficient manner. To assume responsibility and accountability for accuracy of procedures performed.</p>
<p><b>Department Summary:</b></p>
<p>The Laboratory provides clinical testing in the areas of hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank. Primary testing clients include the Emergency Department, IMCU, PCU, 3W and other hospital departments, in addition to serving Aultman Health System outpatients and Aultman Laboratory Services Clients. This clinical laboratory offers an extensive test menu and performs close to 350,000 tests a year.</p>
<p><b>Job Qualifications:</b></p>
<ul><li>Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology from an accredited institution.</li>
<li>Certification as a Medical Lab Technician (preferred) or certification eligible, from an approved agency.

<p><b>Responsibilities and Expectations:</b></p>
<ul><li>Maintain competence in the following testing areas: Chemistry, Coagulation, Hematology, Urinalysis, and Blood Bank (if applicable).</li>
<li>Assist accessioning as needed to receive and process laboratory specimens.</li>
<li>Successfully operates instrumentation in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures.</li>
<li>Performs testing and quality control using approved laboratory procedures and instrumentation.</li>

<p><b>Working Conditions:</b></p>
<ul><li>This unit requires 24/7 coverage.</li>
<li>Work 7.5, 8, 10, or 12 hours per day which is determined by the Assistant Laboratory Manager.
</li><li>Shifts are variable to volume of department. Rotation as needed.</li>
<li>Work weekends and holidays assigned by the Assistant Laboratory Manager.
</li><li>Lunch periods and breaks are coordinated with other staff members to maintain adequate coverage.</li>
<li>Cross training in all areas in the department is determined by the Assistant Laboratory Manager.</li>
</ul>
<p><b>Department Specific Working Conditions:</b></p>
<ul><li>Perform routine and special procedures on patient specimens, which include chemical testing, cell morphology and enumeration, blood bank duties, and constituent analysis according to directions in the procedure manuals.
</li><li>Log-in specimens as needed and report test results utilizing computer hardware and software.
</li><li>Assume responsibility for quality control, calibrations and instrument check procedures in cooperation with the technical specialist. Perform routine and some preventive maintenance procedures on equipment on the department.</li>
<li>Perform basic troubleshooting to solve problems with tests or equipment.</li>
<li>Assist in receipt and stocking of supplies and reagents, maintain log and/or labels reagents when put into us, and prepare reagents and controls as needed.</li>
<li>Obtain blood specimens for patients using approved phlebotomy procedure for analysis in all areas of the laboratory.</li>
<li>Answer the telephone using proper etiquette, transferring or responding as indicated.
</li><li>Rotate weekends, holidays, and departments as scheduled.</li>
<li>Assume responsibility for reading and following policies outlined in the Colleague Handbook and the Laboratory Policies/Procedures in Policy Medical.</li>
<li>Perform CAP surveys and competency verifications as directed.</li>
<li>Assume assigned responsibilities of the section in the absence of the Assistant Laboratory Manager.</li>
<li>Responsible for checking emails and online learning assignments (Relias and Media Lab) on a regular basis.</li>
<li>Perform all other duties as directed by the Assistant Laboratory Manager, manager or Pathologist.

<ul><li>The purpose of this position is to ensure that specimens are being registered, ordered, and processed correctly according to established policies and procedures.
</li></ul><p><b>RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS</b></p>
<ul><li>Work closely with the ALS, Microbiology, Virology, and Send Out departments to make sure that specimens are being registered, ordered, and processed correctly.</li>
<li>Scan requisitions into Cerner.</li>
<li>Answer phones and provide excellent customer service.
</li><li>Perform accurate patient and insurance data entry into Cerner.</li>
<li>Order lab work from OPD, ALS and CareEvolve requisitions</li>
<li>Properly process and prepare specimens for testing</li>
<li>Load the automated track according to established guidelines</li>
<li>Centrifuge and separate specimens according to test requirements</li>
<li>Aliquot as necessary</li>
<li>Monitor and empty tube system punctually, checking for stats and prioritizing work
</li><li>Uphold and follow all hospital and department policies and procedures
</li><li>Adhere to all established safety and Infection Control Policies
</li><li>Maintain instrumentation/equipment in good working order</li>
<li>Provide technical information to laboratory &quot;customers&quot; and appropriately direct questions to the Unit Director and/or other Technical Specialists as indicated

<li>Assists patient with menu completion. Delivers nourishments to assigned patient; provides water, ice, and between meal dietary needs to patients; cleans/maintains patient refrigerator and updates refrigerator temperature log, as assigned.
</li><li>Cleans equipment/utility room and stocks rooms.</li>
<li>Collects specimens and obtains blood glucose according to established procedures and per physician orders and policy. Arranges for transport of specimens to laboratory as appropriate.</li>
<li>Performs EKGs, removal of Foley catheters, and bladder scans under the guidance of a registered nurse.</li>
<li>Places patient on monitor telemetry leads, if applicable.</li>
<li>Applies external devices (such as SCD&rsquo;s, Pulse Oximetry, TPump/Aqua K pad, etc.) per physician order.</li>
<li>Maintains safety initiatives including but not limited to hourly rounding, answering lights, monitoring patients who are a high risk for falls, and may be asked to provide 1:1 bedside companionship for patients as indicated.</li>
<li>Ability to maintain composure in high-pressure situations.</li>
<li>Conveys an attitude of understanding, trust, and compassion for individuals.</li>

<li>If applicable to the clinical unit, the applicant will have to demonstrate Monitor Transport Technician competency within the first 4-6 months and then annually after the initial completion of the Monitor Transport Technician class. The first 365 days requires demonstration of competency 3 times.</li>
<li>Complete house wide mandatory education and maintains Basic Life Support Certification and any licensure if applicable.</li>
</ul>
