Apply now: barbershop.org/careersReports To: Director of Marketing and CommunicationsLocation: Hybrid, with Nashville, TN as base locationFLSA Status: ExemptPosition Summary:The Barbershop Harmony Society seeks an Editorial &amp; Content Specialist who combines strong editorial judgment with systems thinking to lead and scale the Society&rsquo;s storytelling efforts. This role is responsible not only for producing high-quality content, but for designing and managing content workflows that efficiently transform stories from across the Society into multi-channel communications. The ideal candidate is a strong writer and editor who is equally comfortable managing distributed volunteer contributors, operating within structured editorial systems, and leveraging emerging tools, including AI-assisted workflows, to increase capacity and consistency.Key Responsibilities:The Harmonizer Magazine (50&ndash;60%)<ul><li>Lead editorial planning and production of The Harmonizer bi-monthly publication</li><li>Develop and maintain a forward-looking editorial calendar aligned with organizational priorities</li><li>Edit and refine submissions from members and contributors for clarity, tone, and impact</li><li>Coordinate publication production, including layout, photo selection, and distribution</li><li>Ensure each issue reflects high-impact storytelling and key Society initiatives</li><li>Develop repeatable editorial workflows to improve efficiency and consistency of production</li><li>Identify opportunities to repurpose magazine content across digital channels</li></ul>Society Storytelling &amp; Content Systems (40&ndash;50%)<ul><li>Write and produce the Society&rsquo;s weekly Livewire e-newsletter using structured content workflows</li><li>Create and update website content in Craft CMS to support programs and initiatives</li><li>Identify, capture, and develop stories from chapters, districts, quartets, and programs</li><li>Support internal departments with storytelling aligned to strategic priorities</li><li>Design and maintain content intake and tracking systems to manage story pipelines</li><li>Transform individual stories into multiple formats (newsletter, web, social, print)</li><li>Leverage AI-assisted tools to support drafting, editing, and content scaling while maintaining BHS voice and quality standards</li><li>Continuously improve content workflows to increase output without sacrificing quality</li></ul>Contributor &amp; Volunteer Management<ul><li>Recruit, guide, and support a network of volunteer writers and contributors</li><li>Provide editorial direction, feedback, and coaching to improve contributor output</li><li>Establish clear expectations and processes for submissions</li><li>Maintain positive, mission-aligned relationships with contributors</li></ul>Qualifications:Core Qualifications<ul><li>Bachelor&rsquo;s degree in communications, journalism, or a related field</li><li>Minimum of 3 years of experience in editorial, content, or publishing roles</li><li>Demonstrated ability to edit for clarity, tone, and audience alignment</li><li>Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines</li></ul>Preferred Qualifications<ul><li>Experience managing content pipelines or editorial systems</li><li>Ability to work with structured workflows, templates, and content calendars</li><li>Experience repurposing content across multiple channels (print, email, web, social)</li><li>Experience working with distributed contributors or volunteer-based organizations</li><li>Comfort working with or willingness to learn AI-assisted content tools</li><li>High-end digital photography experience with an eye for composition, lighting, and storytelling, suitable for print and digital publication, preferred</li></ul>Technical Skills<ul><li>Proficiency in Adobe InDesign</li><li>Experience with content management systems (Craft CMS, WordPress, or similar)</li><li>Proficiency in Google Workspace</li><li>Familiarity with AI writing and editing tools is a plus</li><li>Experience with content tracking tools such as Airtable or Google Sheets is a plus</li><li>Experience with Slack and Basecamp is a plus</li></ul>Success Profile:The ideal candidate is:<ul><li>A strong editor who can elevate the writing of others, not just create their own</li><li>A systems thinker who enjoys organizing and improving content workflows</li><li>Comfortable balancing structure and creativity</li><li>Able to work independently while coordinating across a distributed organization</li><li>Energized by mission-driven storytelling and community impact</li></ul>Submission requirements:<ul><li>Resume or CV</li><li>Cover Letter</li><li>Professional Portfolio.
