<div>Brookhaven National Laboratory&rsquo;s National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate for AI-driven Lab Automation for Life Sciences for an on-site position in the Biological, Environmental and Planetary Science Division.
The aim of the position is to advance the frontiers of structural biology by developing AI-driven methods for improving crystal quality at scale. This role will enable new discoveries in life sciences and bio-technology relying on structural biology methods.
The ideal candidate would have a background and an interest in Biophysics, Biochemistry, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
Join a team of scientists at the leading macromolecular crystallography beamlines, the crystallization laboratory, the computing center and contribute to science projects at the interface between AI method development and large-scale research facilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
<ul><li>Develop and implement AI-enabled laboratory-workflows for automated crystallization screening, optimization, and characterization integrating imaging, experimental metadata, and diffraction outcomes.
</li><li>Design and deploy computer vision methods to detect and track crystal growth.
</li><li>Develop closed-loop optimization approaches to recommend crystallization conditions and harvesting strategies based on experimental feedback.
</li><li>Develop, train and integrate AI/ML models with laboratory automation systems, including crystallization robotics, liquid handlers, and imaging platforms.
</li><li>Build scalable data pipelines linking experimental metadata, imaging data, and diffraction results for high-throughput analysis.
</li><li>Evaluate model performance using experimental metrics and support deployment into user-facing workflows.
</li><li>Collaborate with synchrotron beamline scientists and laboratory and crystallization staff.
</li><li>Document methods and results, contribute to manuscripts and reports, and present the work at conferences.
</li><li>Participate in interdisciplinary team science.
</li></ul>Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
<ul><li>Ph.D. in computer science, bioinformatics, biophysics, applied mathematics, or related field.
</li><li>Expertise in machine learning, computer vision, or image analysis.
</li><li>Experience with data management and databases.
</li><li>Experience working with Python, scientific software development, version control and collaborative code development, such as Git
</li><li>Ability to work in interdisciplinary teams.
</li><li>Strong publication record.
</li></ul>Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
<ul><li>Experience with machine learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, etc.) and integrating ML in a research lab facility.
</li><li>Familiarity with lab automation or robotics.
</li><li>Experience with black-box optimization, including active learning or Bayesian optimization.
</li><li>Experience with imaging, time-series or high-dimensional data.
</li><li>Exposure to crystallography or structural biology.
</li><li>Experience with multimodal datasets and developing reproducible workflows.
</li><li>Familiarity with experiment tracking and metadata capture.
</li></ul>Additional Information:
<ul><li>This position is a 2-year term, with the possibility of renewal contingent on performance and funding availability

You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. <div>The Business Services Directorate (BSD) provides high-quality business services to support the Lab's research initiatives by participating in cross-functional teams with a focus on risk mitigation and cost management, which is a critical component to the Lab's success. Led by the Chief Financial Officer, Brookhaven&rsquo;s Business Services Directorate includes the Budget Office, Fiscal Services Division, Procurement &amp; Property Management Division, Chief Financial Office, Digital Transformation Office, and the Business Operations Offices. The Directorate manages a broad range of financial activities, including the planning and implementation of the Lab&rsquo;s fiscal matters and its approximately $900 million annual budget.
The Business Services Directorate (BSD) has an opening for a Business Specialist position within the Budget Office. This individual will report to the Assistant Budget Officer for Direct Programs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
<ul><li>Prepare financial and management reports for laboratory management and DOE using Microsoft Excel and Power BI, with supporting presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint.
</li><li>Review and process new funding work authorizations for DOE and non-DOE sources.
</li><li>Maintain, enhance, and ensure the accuracy and integrity of existing Power BI reports and dashboards used by the Budget Office.
</li><li>Design, develop, and migrate Excel-based, ad hoc, and legacy reports into Power BI, including:
<ul><li>Requirements gathering;
</li><li>Data modeling and validation;
</li><li>Documentation of assumptions and methodologies.
</li></ul></li><li>Support the annual DOE Office of Science budget submission process, including:
<ul><li>Review and submission of approximately 170 proposals;
</li><li>Reconciliation against PeopleSoft ERP data;
</li><li>Preparation of required schedules, estimates, and supporting analyses.
</li></ul></li><li>Reconcile laboratory funding and current balances on DOE and SPP programs.
</li><li>Perform month-end and year-end closing activities, including new fiscal year startup.
</li><li>Assist with tasks.
</li><li>Assist with preparing and maintaining documentation for policies and procedures.
</li><li>Perform other recurring and ad hoc duties as assigned.
</li></ul>Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
<ul><li>Bachelor&rsquo;s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a directly related field, or equivalent contemporary full-time directly related experience on a 2:1 (experience: college) basis.
</li><li>Four (4) years of full-time, directly related experience with progressively increasing responsibility in a business, financial, or budget role.
</li><li>Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including complex formulas and functions (e.g., XLOOKUP, SUMPRODUCT, INDEX/MATCH, nested formulas), pivot tables, goal seek, and data validation.
</li><li>Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Power BI, including building, maintaining, and modifying reports and dashboards; working with multiple data sources; and validating results against source systems.
</li><li>Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Government Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) requirements relevant to assigned areas of responsibility.
</li><li>Experience extracting, analyzing, and reconciling data from Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems for reporting and decision-making.
</li><li>Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy and integrity.
</li><li>Strong verbal and written communication skills.
</li><li>Proven organizational skills, initiative, and creativity in problem-solving.
</li><li>Ability to manage competing deadlines and perform effectively in a fast-paced environment.
</li><li>Working knowledge of Office 365 applications, including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Teams.
</li><li>Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships in a multicultural environment.
</li></ul>Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
<ul><li>Experience with PeopleSoft ERP Financial Applications.
</li><li>Knowledge of BNL policies, practices, and procedures.
</li><li>Knowledge of ChatGPT; AI; SQL; Power Query.
</li><li>Advanced Power BI experience, or similar, including:
<ul><li>Data modeling concepts;

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable, and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $82,950 - $124,350 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate&rsquo;s qualification, education, and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
