<p></p><div><div><div><p>The Orientation and Mobility Specialist instructs students with visual impairment including blindness with the development of skills and knowledge that enable them to travel independently, based on assessment needs and abilities. The Orientation and Mobility Specialist (O&amp;M) consults regularly with sighted peers, parents, classroom teachers and/or other personnel to assist in home and classroom environmental modifications, adaptations, and considerations to enable the student with visual impairment to travel with proficiency, safety and confidence in familiar and unfamiliar environments.</p></div><p></p><div><p><b><br>
Essential Functions</b>:</p></div><div><div><ul><li>
Works with the teacher of students with visual impairments to conduct the functional vision assessment as it relates to independent travel</li><li>
Conducts assessments that focus on both long- and short-term needs of the student.</li><li>
Prepares sequential and meaningful instruction geared to the student's assessed needs, IEP goals and objectives, functioning, and motivational levels. This instruction should be reflected in weekly or monthly lesson plans, as appropriate.</li><li>
Prepares and uses equipment and materials, for example, tactile maps, models, distance low vision devices, and long canes, for the development of O&amp;M skills</li><li>

Transports the student with parent permission to various community locations, as necessary, to provide meaningful instruction in realistic learning environments.</li><li>
Is responsible for the student's safety at all times and in all teaching environments while fostering maximum independence.</li><li>
Evaluates the student's progress on an ongoing basis with progress reports each 6/9 weeks as required.</li><li>
Keeps progress notes on each student.</li><li>
Provides in-service training to regular and special education personnel, sighted peers, and parents concerning the O&amp;M needs of the student</li></ul></div></div><div><div><p><b>

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands. The employee is frequently required to walk; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee may be required to stand for long periods, and to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.</p></div><p></p><div><p><b><br>
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work</b><b>:</b> This is a full-time, 193-day calendar position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. Hours are dependent on the needs of the districts. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required as job duties demand.</p></div><p></p><div><p><b><br>

Education and Experience</b><b>:</b></p></div><p></p><div><div><br>
<ul><li>
Level of Degree: Must possess Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist from the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP)</li><li>
Additional credentialing as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired preferred, but not required</li></ul></div><p></p><div><p><b><br>
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities</b><b>:</b></p></div><p></p><div><ul><li><p><br>
Orientation and mobility instruction is a sequential process in which visually impaired individuals are taught to utilize their remaining senses to determine their position within their environment and to negotiate safe movement from one place to another. The skills involved in this teaching include, but are not limited to:</p></li><li><p>
Concept development, which includes body image, spatial, temporal, positional, directional, and environmental concepts</p></li><li><p>
Motor development, including motor skills needed for balance, posture, and gait, as well as the use of adaptive devices and techniques to assist those with multiple disabilities</p></li><li><p>
Sensory development, which includes visual, auditory, vestibular, kinesthetic, tactile, olfactory, and proprioceptive senses, and the interrelationships of these systems</p></li><li><p>
Residual vision stimulation and training</p></li><li><p>
Human guide technique</p></li><li><p>
Upper and lower protective techniques</p></li></ul></div></div><p></p><div><div><p><b><br>
Work Authorization/Security Clearance (if applicable)</b><b>:</b> Citizenship or work authorization to work in the United States required.</p></div><p></p><div><p><b><br>
