Position Overview
We are seeking a research coordinator to join the science department. This one-year, full-time term position (with possibility of renewals), beginning after March 2026, focuses on our Pollinators Living in Urban Gardens (PLUG) research. This multiyear project investigates various aspects of the ecology of pollinator gardens. Responsibilities include coordinating and conducting fieldwork and lab work; data management and statistical analyses; writing of reports and manuscripts; and education and outreach activities. The coordinator will also assist with other ongoing projects and tasks in the lab as appropriate.
The overarching objective of PLUG is to transform the way we steward our landscapes by helping people make informed decisions about which plants are best for supporting pollinators. PLUG aims to generate lasting, broad-scale impact via rigorous plant evaluation trials, dissemination of science-backed guidelines for gardeners and growers, and development of standardized protocols for evaluating the pollinator conservation potential of plants.
Key Responsibilities<ul><li>
Pollinator surveys (including netting and pollinator identification)</li><li>
Plant and floral resource surveys</li><li>
Flower nectar sampling</li><li>
Coordinating a field team</li><li>
Planning and executing fieldwork</li><li>
Laboratory analysis of pollen macronutrients</li><li>
Data entry, data analysis, and data visualization</li><li>
Report/manuscript writing</li><li>
Implementation and development of education and outreach activities</li><li>
Other general research tasks (organization of lab, data sheets, cleanup)</li></ul>
Qualifications Required:<ul><li>
More than two years of research experience in pollination ecology/evolution, insect ecology/evolution, plant ecology/evolution, and/or related areas</li><li>
Bachelor&rsquo;s degree in biology, botany, ecology, entomology, evolution, conservation and/or related fields</li><li>
Experience coordinating a field team and/or mentorship of students</li><li>
Interest in the natural history of plants, insects/pollinators, gardens, and/or urban environments</li><li>
Experience working in both laboratory and field settings</li><li>
A valid driver&rsquo;s license with a good driving record</li><li>
The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively to coordinate research activities</li><li>
Strong communication and interpersonal skills</li></ul>
Preferred:<ul><li>
Quantitative and analytical skills using R</li><li>
Experience with scientific data analysis and writing, or a strong willingness to learn these skills</li><li>
Experience with education and outreach activities related to ecology</li></ul>
Work Environment, Travel, and Physical Demands:
This position will require work in the office, lab, and field, some of which will not be at the Chicago Botanic Garden. All field locations are in the greater Chicago region. During summer, the majority of time for this position will be spent outside in potentially physically demanding conditions. Standing, walking, and bending for data collection is required. Some requirements for lifting, pushing, or pulling items less than 30 pounds.

Position Overview
We are seeking a research coordinator to join the science department. This one-year, full-time term position (with possibility of renewals), beginning after March 2026, will support the Rethinking Lawns project. This is a partnership between the Chicago Botanic Garden and Chicago Park District studying ecosystem services associated with alternative lawn plantings, as well as how to best install and maintain lawn alternative plantings. This position will include field data collection and site maintenance at lawn alternative field sites at the Chicago Botanic Garden and in multiple Chicago Park District parks. During non-field time, a major component of the work will be entering, cleaning, and analyzing data collected. In addition, the lead technician will contribute to manuscript writing and other types of science communication. The successful candidate will join a collaborative group of scientists and land managers in the Chicago area and beyond.
Key Responsibilities
In this role you will be responsible for the following:<ul><li>
Collect, clean, and analyze data collected as part of the Rethinking Lawns project.</li><li>
Assist in manuscript writing.</li><li>
Assist with fieldwork in the summer at the Chicago Botanic Garden, and in several sites at Chicago Park District. This will include plant and pollinator identification, collecting water infiltration data and soil data.</li><li>
Assist in planting and maintenance of research plantings at the Chicago Botanic Garden and Chicago Park District.</li><li>
Assist with additional lab, field, and literature research as needed.</li><li>
Coordinate lawn alternatives projects across the Chicago Botanic Garden.</li><li>
Assist in other public science communication projects (e.g., writing for the public, giving presentations) as needed.</li><li>
Contribute to managing grant expenses and reporting when needed.</li><li>
Depending on their interests, the lead technician will be able to expand their work into an independent research project and, if interested, attend/present at conferences.</li></ul>
Qualifications Required<ul><li>
Bachelor's degree in biology or a related scientific field included but not limited to: ecology, environmental sciences, biology, geography, or plant science</li><li>
At least one field season working outdoors over a range of weather conditions</li><li>
Experience with data analysis and/or scientific writing</li><li>
Comfort traveling to neighborhoods throughout Chicago and being outdoors in public urban spaces</li><li>
Experience using programs such as Excel for entering and storing data</li><li>
Experience working in both laboratory and field settings</li><li>
A valid driver&rsquo;s license with a good driving record</li><li>
The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively to coordinate research activities</li><li>
Strong communication and interpersonal skills</li></ul>
Preferred<ul><li>
Masters in Science degree preferred</li><li>
Experience collecting data on plants, pollinators, or soil preferred</li><li>

Laborer Construction - Fountain &amp; Pool Maintenance Position Overview:
Maintain fountains and pools throughout the Garden. Assist construction manager on various projects as needed.
Responsibilities:
In this role you will be responsible for the following:<ul><li>
Cleaning debris from fountains &amp; pools.</li><li>
Making sure water levels are correct in fountains &amp; pools.</li><li>
Testing water quality in runnel at Learning Center and adjusting when necessary.</li><li>
Checking for leaks in the plumbing systems of fountains and reporting such to engineers.</li><li>
Assisting construction manager and engineers in various jobs, from trenching to moving furniture.</li></ul>
Qualifications:<ul><li>
Prior maintenance experience in the construction trades a plus.</li><li>
You will be trained in the various operations of the fountains and pools.</li><li>
Have a valid Illinois driver&rsquo;s license insurable by the Chicago Botanic Garden.</li><li>
Willing to learn in a fast-paced environment.</li></ul>
Physical Demands:
Work outdoors in all weather conditions. Be able to lift, pull, or push 50 pounds. Be able to carry up to 50 pounds upstairs. Be able to climb ladders up to 10 feet. Work in fountain/pool areas where there is water, at times knee-deep.
