City Cast Philly is seeking a sharp, voice-driven writer to create a weekly newsletter celebrating and supporting Philly&rsquo;s small business community. This role will focus on helping readers discover where to shop local while spotlighting the people and trends shaping Philly&rsquo;s independent business scene. The ideal candidate knows Philly well, has strong opinions about where to spend money locally, and is excited to turn that knowledge into a smart, timely, and highly readable weekly guide.

What You&rsquo;ll Do<ul><li>
Write a weekly City Cast Philly newsletter focused on small businesses and local shopping, with a clear point of view and a strong, engaging voice.</li><li>
Create a timely shopping guide in each issue, curating smart, specific recommendations tied to the moment (for example: top spots for local sports gear, best takeout options for your summer picnic, or seasonal gift guides).</li><li>
Develop a complementary second segment each week, either profiling a specific local business or breaking down a trend affecting Philly&rsquo;s small business ecosystem.</li><li>
Pitch a cohesive newsletter plan each week, ensuring that the shopping guide and second segment are connected thematically without feeling repetitive.</li><li>
Proactively identify, reach out to, and interview small business owners, operators, and experts for the profile and reporting portions of the newsletter.</li><li>
Write a thoughtful, upbeat outro featuring good news, local tips, or special recommendations that leave readers feeling informed and inspired to shop local.</li><li>
Collaborate closely with the City Cast Philly team and work with the Executive Producer through the editing process to sharpen structure, clarity, and impact.</li><li>
(Bonus) Discuss your reporting and recommendations on the City Cast Philly podcast when appropriate.</li></ul> 

Requirements 
 
What You Bring<ul><li>
A strong, confident writing voice and a love of service journalism that helps readers make smart, local choices.</li><li>
Deep knowledge of Philly and its small business landscape, or a proven ability to learn it quickly and thoroughly.</li><li>
Experience pitching and executing reported stories or newsletters with a clear editorial vision.</li><li>
The ability to connect ideas across segments and build a newsletter that feels intentional, cohesive, and fresh week after week.</li><li>
Strong reporting instincts, including comfort with cold outreach and interviewing local business owners.</li><li>
A strong existing network of relationships within Philly&rsquo;s small business community that enables quick sourcing, original reporting, and insider-level recommendations.</li><li>
A collaborative mindset and openness to editing and feedback in a team-driven environment.</li><li>
Bonus: Comfort speaking about your work on a podcast or interest in growing as an on-mic contributor.</li></ul>
Compensation
Compensation is commensurate with experience and topic - starting at $40/hour, with an expectation of five hours per week. (Any other contributions are negotiable on a per-project basis).

 City Cast DC is hiring an ambitious, creative Data Reporter to uncover surprising truths about life in the nation's capital. This role is the first of its kind at City Cast &mdash; our ideal candidate will help us shape this role and the future of data journalism at City Cast DC.
 
 
 In this role, you'll dig into publicly available datasets across DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia to surface hidden patterns, explain complicated systems, and create practical resources for our audience. You might analyze crime trends, housing data, 311 complaints, traffic patterns, restaurant inspections, budgets, property tax records, or election returns and turn them into clear reporting, interactive databases, searchable tools, or visual explainers.
 
 
 You will likely use AI-powered tools, including platforms like Claude Code, to sift through large data sources, identify insights, build workflows, and help prototype user-facing databases or interfaces.
 
 
 In addition to publishing data-driven stories and graphics in our newsletters, you'll regularly discuss your findings on the City Cast DC podcast and create social content that translates charts, findings, and numbers in compelling, digestible ways. You'll also partner with other beat reporters on any data-driven projects. You'll have the autonomy to pursue meaningful work, backed by a staff that values usefulness, delight, and accountability.
 
 
 The ideal candidate is collaborative and intellectually curious &mdash; someone who sees spreadsheets as story prompts and believes great local journalism can be both rigorous and joyful.

 What You'll Do

 Identify and analyze publicly available data from DC and surrounding jurisdictions to uncover impactful stories and actionable insights

 Use AI tools and coding platforms (e.g., Claude Code or similar) to clean, analyze, and interrogate datasets, and to prototype user-facing interfaces

 <li>
 Pitch, report, and write original data-driven stories that reflect what DC residents are talking about &mdash; and what they should be talking about next.
 </li>
 <li>
 Build useful reader-facing tools &mdash; such as searchable databases, maps, explainers, or trackers &mdash; that make local systems more transparent and accessible
 </li>
 <li>
 Contribute regularly to the City Cast DC podcast, explaining findings in plain language while bringing personality and curiosity to the conversation
 </li>
 <li>
 Create visual and social assets that extend the reach of your reporting and make data engaging
 </li>
 <li>
 Help grow support for the City Cast DC Neighbors membership program, including pitching during campaigns
