<div>Job Summary:

The Assistant City Attorney I provides legal representation and advice to the City, City Council, City boards and commissions, and City staff; and performs additional duties and responsibilities assigned by the City Attorney.

The salary range for this position is $103,189.63 - $144,465.57 annually with a hiring range of $103,189.63 - $123,827.60, depending on qualifications and experience. This opportunity will be available to applicants until Monday, December 8, 2025, at 5:00 P.M. M.S.T.

Essential Functions:
<ul>
<li>May attend City Council meetings and City management team meetings for the City Attorney as needed.</li>
<li>Interprets federal, state and local laws, rulings and regulations.</li>
<li>Provides legal advice to City Council, City departments and officials, and various City boards and commissions.</li>
<li>Prepares contracts, ordinances, resolutions and other legal documents.</li>
<li>Reviews City contracts and other legal documents for legal sufficiency and potential legal implications.</li>
<li>Identifies potential and actual legal issues raised by City policies and practices and recommends actions to address such issues.</li>
<li>Represents the City in negotiations and in administrative and court proceedings.</li>
<li>Performs professional legal work carrying the highest levels of volume, complexity, consequence, autonomy and responsibility.</li>
<li>Performs legal research, write briefs, memorandum and opinions of law for the City Attorney, City Council, City boards and commissions, City staff, and in conjunction with litigation activities.</li>
<li>Must keep the City Attorney regularly informed of matters being handled as required.</li>
<li>As assigned or required, prosecutes municipal court cases and gives related law enforcement advice.</li>
<li>Attend meetings of boards and commissions as assigned.</li>
<li>Performs such other duties as are assigned or required by the City Attorney.</li>

<li>This position has no supervisory or Management Responsibilities.</li>
</ul>
Qualifications:

Education:
<ul>
<li>Required: Law degree from an ABA-accredited U.S. law school.</li>
</ul>
Experience:
<ul>
<li>Required: 3 Years experience in municipal law and/or related areas such as land use, real estate, sales and use tax, elections, civil litigation and/or other local government law.</li>
</ul>
Certifications:
<ul>
<li>Valid driver&rsquo;s license preferred.</li>
<li>Must be licensed to actively practice law in the State of Colorado and be in good standing with the Colorado Supreme Court or in good standing in home state and be eligible for, and have applied for, admission by motion.</li>
</ul>
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
<ul>
<li>General knowledge of the law.</li>
<li>Specific knowledge of municipal law, other local government law, real property law, land use law, employment law, utility law or similar areas relevant to a municipal practice.</li>
<li>General knowledge of City organization and operations.</li>
<li>Skilled in legal writing and research.</li>
<li>Ability to participate in team problem solving.</li>
<li>Strong analytical skills.</li>
<li>Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.</li>
<li>Ability to use word processing and presentation software, and to do on-line legal research.</li>
<li>Ability to work independently in protecting the legal interests of the City and in supporting the goals and objectives of the City Council, City Manager and City Attorney.</li>
<li>Ability to perform with integrity; demonstrate honesty and sensitivity to ethical issues; and avoid actual or apparent impropriety and/or conflicts of interest.</li>
<li>Exercise appropriate judgment, often under pressure, consistent with the highest levels of volume, complexity, consequence, autonomy and responsibility attending the position.</li>
<li>Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and officials, co-workers and the public, and deal with problems timely, effectively, courteously and tactfully.</li>
</ul>
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
<ul>
<li>Frequent: Minimal physical effort typically found in clerical work. Primarily sedentary, may occasionally lift and carry light objects. Walking and/or standing as needed and minimal.</li>
</ul>
Working Environment:
<ul>
<li>Frequent: Exposure to routine office noise and equipment.</li>
<li>Occasional: Exposure to hazards typically found in general office environments where there is rarely to no exposure to injury or accident.</li>
</ul>
