DESCRIPTION</b></p><p>
The Driver IV in the Solid Waste Department serves as a backup driver for various waste collection routes, ensuring continuity of service in the absence of regular drivers. This position requires the operation of specialized vehicles, adherence to safety protocols, and effective communication with departmental staff and the public.</p><p><b>
QUALIFICATIONS</b></p><ul><li>
High school diploma or equivalent is required.</li><li>
Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) Class B is required.</li><li>
Minimum of 2 years of experience as a commercial driver, preferably in waste management or related field is preferred.</li><li>
Clean driving record with no history of major traffic violations or accidents.</li></ul><p><b>
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES</b></p><ul><li>
Knowledge of traffic laws, regulations, and safety practices related to commercial driving.</li><li>
Skills in communication to interact professionally with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.</li><li>
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including bending, twisting, and prolonged sitting.</li><li>
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, and environments.</li><li>
Ability to operate and maneuver large vehicles in tight spaces and adverse conditions.</li></ul><p><b>
MAJOR DUTIES</b></p><ul><li>
Serve as a relief driver for waste collection routes, including residential, commercial, and special pickup routes, as assigned by departmental supervisors.</li><li>
Operate solid waste collection vehicles, such as garbage trucks, recycling trucks, and yard waste trucks, following designated routes and schedules to pick up and transport waste materials to designated disposal facilities.</li><li>
Perform pre-trip inspections of vehicles to ensure proper functioning and compliance with safety standards, including checking fluid levels, tire pressure, brakes, and lights.</li><li>
Safely maneuver vehicles in various traffic and road conditions, including congested areas, narrow streets, and inclement weather, while adhering to traffic laws and regulations.</li><li>
Communicate effectively with departmental dispatchers, supervisors, and coworkers to coordinate route assignments, report issues or concerns, and provide updates on route progress.</li><li>
Assist in the training and mentoring of new drivers and relief drivers, providing guidance on route navigation, vehicle operation, and safety procedures.</li><li>
Assist in the maintenance and cleanliness of vehicles, including washing, fueling, and minor repairs, to ensure proper maintenance and compliance with departmental standards.</li><li>
Adhere to safety protocols, procedures, and regulations to maintain a safe working environment for oneself and others, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and compliance with occupational health and safety standards.</li><li>
Provide courteous and professional customer service to residents and businesses along collection routes, addressing inquiries, complaints, and service requests in a timely and respectful manner.</li><li>
Maintain accurate records, documentation, and reporting related to vehicle inspections, route assignments, mileage, and service activities.</li><li>
Other duties as assigned.</li></ul><p>
This position is an essential service position and will require providing services during emergency situations.
