Typical starting pay will be at the beginning of the range, depending on qualifications.*Primary PurposePerforms firefighting, fire prevention, and rescue work. Maintains and cleans Fire Department buildings, grounds, and equipment.SupervisionWorks under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief, Deputy Chief, Fire Captain, Fire Lieutenant, Fire Engineer, or an Incident Commander at emergency scenes.</li>

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
 Responds to alarms for fires, hazardous chemical, and emergency medical incidents.Lays and connects hose to hydrants and fire apparatus, attaches, and changes nozzles, aims, and directs water streams.Uses various hand and power tools to fight fires, gain entry, extricate victims, and ventilate buildings.Utilizes various portable extinguishers, wet and dry chemicals, solvents, and absorbents to fight fires and contain spills.Performs salvage and overhaul activities including protecting building contents, cleaning, securing, and preserving fire scenes.Removes firefighting equipment from trucks, lifts and carries items, sets up and uses ladders, tools, and equipment as necessary.Climbs ground and aerial ladders, scales walls and rappels using rope and harness.Maneuvers under, over, or around obstacles.Searches smoke filled buildings utilizing self-contained breathing apparatus looking for the location of fire, occupants, or victims.Performs prolonged running, walking, or standing while conducting inspections, pre-fire tours, and emergency scene operations.Cares for the injured and administers basic emergency medical aid.Performs routine and preventive maintenance on equipment and assists in periodic inspections or certification tests.Reads, studies, and interprets department procedures, technical manuals, and building plans.Performs pre-fire planning activities including touring and studying businesses for physical layout, possible hazards, location of water sources, exposure problems, potential life loss, etc.Participates in drills and training sessions to maintain required level of knowledge and skills proficiency.Maintains and cleans Fire Department buildings and grounds.Operates vehicles and fire apparatus as required.Prepares and delivers various public education programs regarding fire prevention and safety.Assists in fire safety inspections of public and private buildings or property.Identifies and reports maintenance needs of assigned equipment.Deals effectively and courteously with fellow employees and the public.Performs other duties as assigned.Important DutiesAttends in-service training sessions or other training sessions deemed appropriate by supervisor or department head.Maintains appropriate supplies for assigned area.Maintains a neat and orderly work area.

 Physical DemandsVision defect cannot exceed 20/100 and must be corrected to 20/30 in both eyes; must be able to distinguish primary colors; must pass a post-offer medical examination including a hearing test; must be able to reach, hold and grip; must have lateral mobility; must possess the manual dexterity to use a computer and climb ladders; must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds for a distance of at least 50 feet; must be able to drag and/or push and pull up to 165 pounds for a distance of at least 50 feet; must be able to walk, sit or stand for prolonged periods; work at heights above 100 ft or higher as required by the emergency situation; walk, crawl, run, jump, twist, climb, bend, squat, kneel. Work EnvironmentMay be exposed to extreme weather conditions. Will be exposed to life threatening conditions associated with firefighting, emergency medical situations, and hazardous chemicals.
