Coos Forest Protective Association (CFPA) Gold Beach and Brookings Stations are now accepting applications for Wildland Fire Engine and Hand Crew Members for the 2026 fire season.
 
Suppression Specialist duties include but are not limited to: 
Acting and performing effectively in a team environment as a Wildland Firefighter, Hand Crew Member, Engine or Tender Operator to perform initial and extended attack wildland firefighting including fire line construction and mop-up using standard firefighting hand tools, deploying hose lays, operating pumps and acting as nozzle and/or hose person in fire suppression as well as the use of hand tools to clear roadside debris and vegetation in prevention activities. Cleans and maintains various items of equipment including the washing of vehicles. Position includes other tasks as assigned including, but not limited to, Co-Op projects including slash burning, brush clearing and parks maintenance.
 
Experience operating vehicles with manual transmissions, 4-wheel drive and/or airbrakes, wildland fire engines, trucks with water tanks of 2500 to 5000-gallon capacity or crew transports while obeying all traffic laws and/or driving on steep, narrow forest and/or logging roads are required for some positions. Engine and Tender Operators also perform or direct others in starting pump engines, priming pumps, adjusting engine speeds and pump valves, laying hose, appropriate nozzle use, effective use of water and additives, inspect, check, service and adjust various items of equipment including pumps, hose lays, tank and reels for equipment readiness.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS: This position requires long hours of arduous physical activity in all types of terrain and weather conditions with exposure to various hazards including, but not limited to poison oak, bees, smoke, snakes, steep terrain, noise, heat, dust, burning and/or falling materials and other hazards. Successfully passing and maintaining the physical fitness level necessary is required and will be tested on a yearly basis. Various shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and long hours with short notice is required. Assignments to emergency incidents may require being away from the assigned duty station for extended periods of time with occasional travel throughout the state of Oregon and other states.
 
A current/valid Oregon Driver’s License with a Class “C” or higher, as the operation of 4-wheel drive pickups and larger vehicles in various road conditions and during fire situations may be required. Successful candidates for positions that include driving a Company vehicle will be subject to a driving background check with the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Wildland Fire Suppression Specialist-Engine and Hand Crew

<div>Coos Forest Protective Association (Coos FPA) is seeking a Unit Forester to manage the Bridge (Myrtle Point), Oregon office. This position will report directly to the District Operations Chief and will be expected to work effectively in a team environment.
Unit Forester (UF) duties include, but are not limited to:
Performing a wide range of duties related to forest protection including preparation of unit budgets, recruitment, hiring/firing and payroll-related duties of unit employees, pre-suppression activities, supervision of fire suppression and smoke management activities for the unit. An active presence in district training programs and work on special district assignments is required. It is imperative that the UF be proficient in all phases of public relations, have an excellent working knowledge of Bureau of Labor laws as they pertain to private employers and have strong administrative abilities.
Working knowledge of fire protection program goals, objectives, policies and operational procedures of both the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF), and Coos Forest Protective Association (CFPA), as well as Oregon Fire Laws, Enforcement policies, and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Western Oregon Operating Plan is required. Knowledge of forest fire prevention, suppression and mobilization principles and techniques, as well as the experience and capability to direct fire action on single and multiple fire situations. The ability to plan and organize a protection unit with limited supervision to accomplish CFPA&rsquo;s goals and standards, including the ability to identify and solve problems, set unit goals and objectives, develop action plans and budgets, and then evaluate unit accomplishments is necessary. This position supervises full-time and temporary employees as well as participates as part of the CFPA Management Team. Qualified Division Supervisor (DIVS), Incident Commander Type 3 (ICT3) and a strong background in fire investigation are preferred.
Physical ability to perform instant and/or sustained arduous physical activity on fires, work in inclement weather or other activities requiring endurance is required and will be tested in accordance with company policy.
This position requires driving a Coos Forest Protective Association vehicle; you must possess a valid driver&rsquo;s license and have a satisfactory driving record. Successful candidates will be subject to a driving background check with the Department of Motor Vehicles. Driving may require exposure to steep, narrow forest roads. Assignments to emergency incidents may require employees to be away from duty station for up to 21 days. Various shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and long hours with short notice are required. Assignments to emergency incidents, work sessions or meetings may require being away from the assigned duty station for extended periods of time with travel throughout the State of Oregon or other states as assigned. Job duties may require occasional exposure to heavy equipment operations, aircraft, hazards of burning, and/or falling materials.
