The purpose of this job is to respond to a variety of emergency call types including, but not limited to, fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, and specialized rescue.</p><p>
This position works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.</p><p><b>
Duties and Responsibilities</b></p><p><b>
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.</b></p><ul><li>
Responds to emergency medical service calls, drives equipment and administers patient care at the Advanced EMT level, transport patients to emergency care facilities; observes patient responses; maintains accurate and complete prehospital patient care reports.</li><li>
Performs firefighting duties including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, and performing fire suppression, containment, and extinguishing tasks; lays and connects fire hose; secures nozzles and directs streams; raises and climbs ladders; uses various types of extinguishing agents and other firefighting tools.</li><li>
Participates in activities and operations in response to natural disasters, major accidents, incidents involving hazardous materials, and other emergency situations.</li><li>
Participates in emergency rescue operations, including search and rescue, water rescue, elevated rescue, and other rescue operations.</li><li>
Checks and restocks the emergency response vehicles for proper equipment and supplies.</li><li>
Inspects, cleans, tests, and performs general maintenance work on vehicles, apparatus, equipment, station and grounds.</li><li>
Presents programs to the community on safety and fire/EMS prevention topics.</li><li>
Participates in continuing training and instruction program by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes for fire and/or EMS topics.</li><li>
Performs related work as required.</li></ul><p><b>
Minimum Qualifications</b></p><p><b>
Education:</b> Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.</p><ul><li><b>Must possess and maintain all certifications for consideration and duration of employment</b>:</li></ul><ul><li>
Commonwealth of Virginia Office of EMS (VAOEMS) &ndash; Advanced EMT</li><li>
State Certified Firefighter I &amp; II (accepting VDFP, ProBoard, or IFSAC accredited)</li><li>
Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations (accepting VDFP, ProBoard, or IFSAC accredited)</li><li>
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (Basic Life Support)</li><li>
Current certification in NIMS, ICS 100, 200, 700 &amp; 800</li><li>
Current certification in Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (III)</li></ul><p><b>
Other Requirements</b></p><ul><li>
Completion of an endorsed Fire Academy or other training program approved by the Fire Chief.</li><li>
Successful completion of Physical Agility Testing.</li><li>
Successful completion of pre-employment screening, a background check, and fire department physical including a stress test.</li><li>
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver&rsquo;s license with an acceptable driving history.</li></ul><p><b>
Physical Demands</b></p><p>
Medium Work &ndash; Involves lifting 50 or more pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying objects weighting up to 25 or more pounds.</p><p>

The purpose of this job is to respond to emergency calls; provide basic or advanced life support; engage in fire suppression, rescue and a variety of other assigned duties associated with fire and rescue.</p><p>
