Access to high quality healthcare is under increasing pressure. Patient volumes are rising due to an aging population, and the amount of data from scans and image interpretation is increasing at a steeper pace than radiologists and pathologists can handle. Radiology leaders have raised alarm that labor shortages are leading to longer wait times and delays in treatment for patients. Never has there been a bigger need to relieve the pressure from staff. But how exactly do we make that happen?</p><p><b>
The challenge</b></p><p>
Adoption of radiology and pathology solutions is increasingly driven by the extent to which solutions &ldquo;naturally&rdquo; fit into clinical workflows and enable radiologists to deliver quality at speed. This requires not only high-quality medical data and cutting-edge AI models. More so, clinical acceptance and adoption depend on solutions that are designed with a clear understanding of clinical workflows and usage patterns, and with the requirements that different clinical experts have on their tooling. Beyond functional requirements, successful clinical adoption needs highly intuitive solutions, seamless workflow integration (speed), and a great user experience. In sum, we face the overarching challenge of how to integrate AI-based clinical decision-making tools into clinical practice that is characterized by fast-paced, high-stakes decision-making informed by deep domain knowledge and year-long expertise. Prototypes that are highly realistic in the eyes of the clinical user have shown to be an important &ldquo;vehicle&rdquo; to enable rapid co-creation with clinicians. It enables them to give meaningful clinician-centered direction to development complex technical tools. EngD position 1 &ndash; The medical UX/ UI design researcher &amp; AI designer</b></p><p>
In this position you dive deep into understanding the user needs and AI-enabled workflows of the clinical end users and translate those insights into UX requirements, scenarios, UI design concepts of (conversational) user-system interactions and interactive data visualizations. You express your ideas by creating clickable demonstrators together with your buddy &ldquo;the creative technologist&rdquo; (the second EngD candidate) and you enjoy using your user research skills to set up interviews and simulated use tests to collect user feedback, early and often.</p><p>

You work closely with your buddy, the &ldquo;medical UX/ UI design researcher &amp; AI designer&rdquo; where you take the lead in interactive prototype implementation to create a realistic clinical user experience based on actual data and AI outputs.</p><p>

A Masters degree in software engineering or related discipline (e.g., Computer Science/Engineering, Industrial Design with strong technical focus). Masters degree needs to be obtained before the prospective starting date of this position: September/ October 2026.</li></ul><p>

Solid front-end software development skills with modern web technologies and frameworks (e.g., React, data visualization tools and libraries)</li><li>

Introduction</b></h3><p>
In polymeric materials, a fundamental transition is required from synthesis out of fossil-based and one time use to continuous reuse of polymeric products. Current recycling methods cannot recover high-value polymers from complex waste streams such as multilayer packaging and mixed plastic waste, leading to large volumes being incinerated or landfilled. Solvent based recycling offers a promising route to produce high-quality recyclates, but current implementations rely on static process design and control that don&rsquo;t account for feedstock variability, inefficient solvent use, and high energy demand, hindering scale-up.</p><h3 class="jobSectionHeader"><b><br>
Job Description</b></h3><p>
This project will be executed together with company Exergy within the EKKO Circular Plastics project. The PD researcher will develop and validate an AI-enhanced, solvent-based recycling process for complex plastic waste streams such as multilayer packaging and e-waste, while Exergy will develop the digital-twin and machine-learning tools that make the process adaptive and scalable. The research effort will be directed towards the selective recovery in high yield of high-value polymers (e.g., PET, PS, PC, ABS) at high purity, while minimizing solvent consumption and energy demand. The research activities will include understanding of performance profile of recycled polymers by means of various chemical, structural, rheological and mechanical characterization techniques.</p><p>
The PD research will be carried out under the supervision of Prof. Željko Tomović in the Polymer Performance Materials group in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at the TU/e, which is also the part of the interdisciplinary Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS), in which all polymer-related research groups at the TU/e participate. Raman spectroscopy provides the chemical fingerprint of materials and tissues and enables non-invasive, real-time sensing in manufacturing, agrofood and healthcare. While it is used in analytical labs, its application as in-line sensing method and for healthcare has been limited by the cost and size of Raman spectrometers.<br>
Our group is developing a new concept for Raman sensing based on a photonic integrated chip. If successful, it will allow Raman-based sensing of materials and tissues in a mm-sized chip, which can be manufactured in volume and integrated in industrial and consumer applications, including wearables. Besides developing the sensor, we will collaborate with other research organisations and industrial partners to test its use in different applications, in the framework of the large national initiative PhotonDelta. Working on this project within a small team, you will be developing the Raman sensor technology of the future.</p><h3 class="jobSectionHeader"><b>
Job Description</b></h3><p>
The successful candidate will be in charge of developing the sensor technology, in collaboration with a PhD student and another postdoc. This includes the design of the photonic chip, the development of a suitable microfabrication process, the testing of fabricated devices and of their application. The project will be carried out under the supervision of prof. dr. A. Fiore, Dep. Applied Physics and Science Education, and carried out in collaboration with external partners. The European PEER project is an interdisciplinary project between artificial intelligence, social sciences, and societal partners, that aims at enabling deeper and more meaningful interaction and collaboration of AIs and users. Its overall objective is to build interactive and understandable sequential decision-making AI systems that <b>empower end-users by providing them with flexible, personalized solutions adapted to their requirements and capabilities</b>. This goes far beyond the capabilities of current approaches for example in the field of Explainable AI (XAI) or Explainable Reinforcement Learning (XRL).</p><p>
We offer you the exciting opportunity to join this Europe-wide project (involving academia, industry, and non-profit partners) as a <b>Postdoc</b>. Your role will be to develop novel human-centric AI algorithms and techniques for reinforcement learning and planning settings, to enable interactions that allow humans to better understand and trust their AI assistants, and that allow AI systems to better understand and support their human users. We aim for users and AI systems to <b>explore possible plans and solutions together</b>; for more fluid mutual learning and reasoning, and a more helpful conversation between humans and AI.</p><p>
Possible topics include:</p><ul><li>
Reinforcement learning and planning methods which have the ability to propose a variety of solutions upon request, allowing for adaptation and refinement of solutions over time.</li><li>
Enhanced algorithms for explaining automated sequential decision-making which are interactive and responsive to user feedback, allowing for adaptation and refinement of explanations over time.</li><li>
Novel methods for integrating learning, planning, user feedback and the explanation of proposed solutions into a consistent, ongoing, fluid interaction loop between users and AI.</li></ul><p>
In addition, you will contribute to the management of a work package in a large Horizon Europe project. This involves scientific coordination with international partners, supporting the timely delivery of project results, and similar project management tasks.</p><p>
You will be embedded within the AI for Decision-Making cluster of the Information Systems group in the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences at TU/e, and collaborate with a larger team of scientists and application partners within the PEER project. Motivated researcher, with a PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, or a comparable domain.</li><li>
Ability to conduct high quality academic research, reflected in demonstrable outputs.</li><li>
Strong theoretical knowledge and practical experience with artificial intelligence and sequential decision-making, esp. reinforcement learning and/or planning, are an advantage.</li><li>
Strong programming skills e.g. in Python and/or Java.</li><li>
A team player who enjoys working in a dynamic, interdisciplinary team.</li><li>
A proven ability to manage complex projects to completion on schedule.</li><li>
Willingness to contribute to the management of a work package in the PEER project.</li><li>
