The Utility Network development team delivers cutting edge network data management software to customers globally. Bring your passion for communicating sophisticated software capabilities to a broad and diverse audience. We are looking for a creative, detail-oriented, and technically skilled Product Engineer to focus on Utility Network. This is a unique opportunity to work on both hands-on software testing and automation as well as developing engaging and approachable content to communicate and demonstrate best practices about the capabilities of the utility network, web mapping, data visualization, and utility network workflows.

Esri has a Relocation Assistance Program and can provide support with relocating to the Redlands, CA area for this position.

Responsibilities
<ul>
<li>Work with a team of dedicated software engineers and product engineers to design and author test cases</li>
<li>Collaborate with software engineers, product engineers, and other stakeholders to test ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Enterprise functionality related to Utility Network capabilities across the platform, including Geodatabase, Enterprise Databases and Data Store, as well as data management services such as: Utility Network service; Feature service</li>
<li>Learn existing product technologies and troubleshoot production issues in current and past software platform versions</li>
<li>Document software issues found during testing; reproduce bugs and work closely with Software Development Engineers to resolve these issues</li>
<li>Write reference help documentation in our content management system about ArcGIS Utility Network, Esri's advanced network data model and comprehensive framework for managing utility networks such as electric, gas, water, stormwater, wastewater, as well as telecommunication networks</li>
<li>Create and maintain blog articles, videos, guides, and tutorials that provide guidance, best practices, and applied workflows for utilities and telecommunications</li>
<li>Test new features to ensure new workflows and endpoints are accurately represented for all supported versions and products</li>
<li>Triage and address customer reported documentation issues</li>
</ul>
Requirements
<ul>
<li>2+ years of experience in a similar software engineering environment and/or professional writing related experience</li>
<li>Exceptional written and verbal communication skills</li>
<li>Passion for innovative data visualizations and storytelling</li>
<li>Enthusiasm for creating workflows, demos and giving presentations</li>
<li>Ability to translate complex concepts into clear, concise, compelling content</li>
<li>Effective time management and organizational skills; work proactively and volunteer assistance without being asked and under tight turnaround</li>
<li>Demonstrated ability to thrive in an agile environment with a fluid mix of collaborative and independent work</li>
<li>Bachelor's degree in GIS, cartography, computer science, English, or related field</li>
</ul>
Recommended Qualifications
<ul>
<li>Master's degree in computer science, engineering, geography, GIS, mathematics, or related field</li>
<li>Professional writing related to utilities or telecommunications</li>
<li>Experience with ArcGIS software</li>
<li>Experience with relational databases</li>
<li>Familiarity with an application development language such as C#, Java, C++, or Python</li>
<li>Familiarity with the Agile software development life cycle</li>
<li>Exposure to DITA-based content management systems to create and publish documents</li>
<li>Basic understanding and experience with GitHub (issue management, pull requests, GitHub Actions)</li>

Product Engineer II – ArcGIS Utility Network Documentation

<div>Overview

Join Esri's Product Design team as a Principal Product Designer, where you'll lead the design vision for ArcGIS Map Viewer, our flagship web-mapping application used to explore, analyze, and communicate spatial data. Map Viewer empowers users to tell compelling stories, answer complex questions, and solve real-world problems through interactive maps. In this role, you'll drive strategic design initiatives, mentor designers, and collaborate across disciplines to shape the future of mapping experiences in ArcGIS Online.

Responsibilities

Individual Contributor Responsibilities
<ul>
<li>Lead the end-to-end design strategy for Map Viewer, aligning user needs, business goals, and technical feasibility across multiple teams and product lines</li>
<li>Drive cross-functional collaboration with developers, product managers, researchers, and stakeholders to define and deliver mapping experiences using participatory and iterative design techniques</li>
<li>Coordinate with stakeholders to identify requirements and specifications for the development of new and established features</li>
<li>Develop personas, user journeys, information architecture diagrams, wireframes, visual design, and prototypes</li>
<li>Identify enhancements to product designs by conducting user research (usability testing, surveys, customer interviews, and more) with prototypes and fully developed projects</li>
<li>Develop and present holistic design solutions that address business, brand, and user requirements</li>
<li>Ensure accessibility, inclusivity, and usability are embedded in all design work, advocating for WCAG 2.1/Section 508 compliance</li>
<li>Effectively communicate conceptual ideas, design rationale, and the specifics of the user-centered design process to cross-functional teams</li>
</ul>
 Design Leadership &amp; Process Responsibilities
<ul>
<li>Champion user-centered design across the organization by defining experience principles and advocating for design excellence</li>
<li>Establish and evolve design systems and patterns in partnership with the design system team to ensure consistency and efficiency across the ArcGIS platform</li>
<li>Influence product direction by identifying opportunities for innovation, shaping product roadmaps, and contributing to strategic planning</li>
<li>Mentor and guide other designers, fostering growth through design critiques, coaching, and thought leadership</li>
<li>Work with leadership and stakeholders to suggest and implement improvements for team processes, including change management strategies that support scaling and sustainability</li>
<li>Stay ahead of industry trends, bringing fresh thinking and best practices to elevate the design discipline at Esri</li>
</ul>
Requirements
<ul>
<li>8+ years of experience designing complex, enterprise-grade web applications, preferably in SaaS or GIS-related domains</li>
<li>Proven track record of leading strategic design initiatives and delivering impactful outcomes across multiple teams or products</li>
<li>Expertise in Figma, design systems, and component-based design workflows</li>
<li>Deep understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1/Section 508) and experience embedding accessibility into design and development processes</li>
<li>Strong portfolio showcasing strategic thinking, elegant design solutions, and measurable impact</li>
<li>Exceptional communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to influence and inspire across disciplines and levels</li>
<li>Experience conducting and applying user research to inform design decisions</li>
<li>Demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguity, prioritize effectively, and drive alignment across diverse stakeholders</li>
<li>Bachelor's degree in human-centered design, HCI, interaction design, or related field</li>
