Staff Software Engineer &ndash; Identity and Access, Identity Squads

This role is available for candidates located in the UK, Germany, Spain, Ireland and Sweden.

The Opportunity:

Every day, millions of users rely on Grafana to monitor the health and performance of their critical systems, from software applications to factories and even space shuttles. The Identity and Access team at Grafana manages all aspects of authentication and authorization, working across both our open-source and proprietary codebases. The Identity squad, within the team, owns the authentication layer &mdash; the protocols and flows that determine how every Grafana user proves who they are. We actively implement cutting-edge authentication protocols such as MCP OAuth (OAuth 2.1), OIDC, SAML, LDAP, and SCIM, rather than relying on off-the-shelf components.

We are completely redesigning Grafana&rsquo;s authentication at the edge &mdash; a rare opportunity to shape the technical direction of authentication infrastructure at scale, with a direct impact on millions of users every day.

Our code paths sit in the critical hot paths across Grafana&rsquo;s services, making every millisecond of performance essential. As a Staff Engineer, you will be central to defining how we evolve these systems.

What You&rsquo;ll Be Doing:

As a Staff Engineer on the Identity squad, you will set the technical direction for our authentication systems and lead the most complex initiatives from conception through delivery. You will collaborate closely with engineering leadership, product management, and cross-functional partners to define how Grafana authenticates millions of users every day.

<li>Approximately 55% of your time will be dedicated to backend development (Golang), 25% to technical leadership and cross-team collaboration, and 20% to operations and reliability.</li>
<li>Define and own the technical architecture for the Identity squad&rsquo;s authentication systems, including our edge authentication redesign.</li>
<li>Lead the design and implementation of large-scale, multi-quarter initiatives in the critical path of user interaction, spanning multiple services and teams.</li>
<li>Mentor and develop senior engineers, providing technical guidance, design feedback, and support for their professional growth.</li>
<li>Serve as a technical authority for identity protocols at Grafana, driving alignment on how we implement and evolve OAuth, OIDC, SAML, LDAP, and SCIM across the organization.</li>
<li>Drive cross-team technical alignment on authentication standards, patterns, and best practices across Grafana&rsquo;s engineering organization.</li>
<li>Represent Grafana Labs at meetups and conferences, and contribute to the broader identity and authentication community.</li>
</ul>
As we are remote-first and our engineering organization is largely remote, we provide guidance and meet regularly using video calls, so an independent attitude and strong communication skills are essential.

What Makes You a Great Fit:

<li>Deep, proven expertise in distributed systems engineering with Go, with a track record of owning and delivering large-scale production systems end-to-end.</li>
<li>Demonstrated ability to define technical direction and drive architectural decisions independently, with impact that extends beyond your immediate team.</li>
<li>Extensive experience building and operating low-latency, high-throughput services in distributed, multi-tenant environments.</li>

Minimum Qualifications:

The Managed Services team is a newly formed squad within the Databases department. It owns and operates shared, production-critical infrastructure that powers Grafana Cloud&rsquo;s next-generation database products (Mimir, Loki, and Tempo). Today, this includes operating 100+ WarpStream clusters across multiple cloud providers and regions, with continued growth anticipated for the future. WarpStream acts as the streaming backbone for ingestion and read/write decoupling across databases. It sits directly on the hot path for metrics, logs, and traces, handling high-throughput, multi-consumer workloads at massive scale.

In addition to streaming infrastructure, the team works closely with high-volume analytical and storage systems that power query-heavy and aggregation-heavy workloads, where latency, compression behavior, storage layout, and scaling characteristics matter deeply.

What You&rsquo;ll Be Doing:

As a Senior Engineer on Managed Services, you will take ownership of running these systems in production. This involves:

<li>Operating and evolving 100+ multi-cloud streaming clusters and related database infrastructure</li>

Senior Backend Engineer, Grafana Backend Services</h3>

This role is available for candidates located in the UK, Germany, Spain, Ireland and Sweden.

We are looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to join our Grafana Backend Services squad.

The Opportunity:

The Grafana backend Services squad&rsquo;s mission is to deliver the best Grafana service to both On-Prem and Cloud customers in a unified, end-to-end manner, from ownership of the API codebase all the way to operation of its components. Today, this means taking charge of multiple components such as the Grafana Backend API itself and the CLI tool, but also all the orchestration infrastructure required to deliver Grafana at the scale of our Cloud product.

What You'll Be Doing:

<li>Work with your team to deliver new functionality, then use the results to iterate and improve</li>
<li>Contributing to and reviewing design documents for upcoming features</li>
<li>Embrace our open-source culture and contribute to other projects that may not directly fall within your team&rsquo;s scope</li>
<li>Take an active role in influencing our roadmap and your career objectives</li>
<li>Be a part of your team&rsquo;s on-call rotations and take ownership of the services you&rsquo;re running</li>
<li>Mentor and support other team members, participate in design discussions, and collaborate with the team</li>
<li>Regularly sharing ideas and knowledge across a vast array of technical ideologies and mindsets</li>
<li>Working closely with the other squads in the Grafana Division</li>

What Makes You a Great Fit:

<li>Have solid backend development experience, ideally with Go</li>
<li>Good understanding of storage solutions with an emphasis on relational databases like MySQL, SQLite, and Postgres</li>
<li>Care deeply about developer and user experience and the quality of the products that you work on</li>
<li>Have experience with delivering projects from gathering requirements, and brainstorming ideas to shipping a product to the customer&rsquo;s hands in a self-driven way</li>
<li>Have experience writing clean, robust, and performant software that is easily maintained by others</li>
<li>Have experience with mentoring junior engineers in a collaborative but asynchronous environment</li>
<li>Enjoy working on complex solutions &ndash; Grafana is a highly technical solution and has avid followers who rely on it every day and care deeply about their workflows.</li>
<li>Can take on complex challenges and break them down to achieve tight learning loops: to analyze, design, and build modular solutions, deliver MVPs, gather data and feedback, and then progress iteratively</li>

<li>Experience with open-source software and/or commercial open-source companies</li>
<li>Experience working with Docker and Kubernetes</li>
<li>Experience with CI/CD, DevOps, or Developer Efficiency work streams</li>
<li>Been a user of Grafana and Prometheus in operational roles</li>
<li>Familiarity with being on-call and performing operations/SRE tasks</li>

Compensation &amp; Rewards:
