</div></div>A Brief Overview
 
 
The switchboard operator is primarily responsible for communication hospital switchboard and answering service to relay incoming, outgoing, and interoffice calls. Assists in monitoring security monitors and alarms. Operates communication systems, such as telephone, switchboard, intercom, two-way radio, or public address. Answers incoming calls, greets callers, provides information, transfers calls, and/or takes messages as necessary. Route emergency traffic appropriately. Pages individuals to inform them of telephone calls using paging equipment. Performs clerical duties as needed. Monitors alarm systems and contacts security staff members when necessary.
 
 
What you will do
<ul><li>Operate telephone switchboards and systems to advance and complete connections, including those for local, long distance, mobile, person-to-person, and emergency calls
</li><li>Keep records of calls placed and received for answering service
</li><li>Listen to customer requests, referring to appropriate department
</li><li>Monitor automated systems for placing collect calls and intervene for a callers needing assistance
</li><li>Observe signal lights on switchboards, and dial or press buttons to make connections
</li><li>Offer special assistance to persons such as those who are unable to dial or who are in emergency situations
</li><li>Operate paging systems or other systems of bells or buzzers to notify recipients of incoming calls

Works under direct supervision of pharmacists performing clerical tasks, drug distribution activities, computerized order entry, and other medication management duties as authorized by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiner's laws, rules and regulations. Prepare medications under the direction of a pharmacist. May measure, mix, and count out, label, and record amounts and dosages of medications. May review and document patient's arrival medication assuring appropriate dose, route, frequency and duration of therapy.
 
 
What you will do
<ul><li>Receive written prescription or refill requests and verify that information is complete and accurate.

Responsibilities include pre-certifying with insurance companies, filing, scheduling, maintaining records in the Electronic Medical Record system, processing patient specimens, and direct patient care. This role assists providers with office procedures. Administrative tasks include scheduling appointments, billing, coding, and maintaining medical records. Clinical duties include taking and recording vital signs, documenting medical histories, preparing patients for exams, drawing blood, and administering medications under physician or advanced practice provider direction. Adaptability to varied tasks is essential.
 
 
What you will do
<ul><li>Authorize drug refills and provide prescription information to pharmacies.
</li><li>Change dressings on wounds.
</li><li>Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
</li><li>Collect blood, tissue or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing.
</li><li>Contact medical facilities or departments to schedule patients for tests or admission.
</li><li>Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets and physicians' instructions to patients.
</li><li>Help physicians or physician assistant examine and treat patients, handing them instruments and materials or performing such tasks as giving injections or removing sutures.
</li><li>Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight, and height.
</li><li>Inventory and order medical, lab, or office supplies and equipment.
</li><li>Collect co-pays, coinsurance, and past due balances and record transactions.
</li><li>Operate equipment to administer routine diagnostic tests.
</li><li>Perform general office duties such as answering telephones or completing insurance forms.
</li><li>Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
</li><li>Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician or physician assistant.
</li><li>Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean.
</li><li>Record patients' medical history, vital statistics, and information such as test results in medical records.
</li><li>Schedule appointments for patients.
</li><li>Set up medical laboratory equipment.
</li><li>Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician.
</li></ul><div><div>Qualifications:
</div></div><ul><li>H.S. Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) Required
</li><li>Graduation from an accredited program for Medical Assistants Required
</li><li>Certified Medical Assistant Required
</li><li>Basic Cardiac Life Support &amp; First Aid - American Heart Association within 60 Days Required
</li><li>Child Abuse Iowa Mandatory Reporter - Iowa Department of Human Services within 180 Days Required
</li><li>Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter - Iowa Department of Human Services within 180 Days Required
</li><li>1-3 years experience in a medical office Preferred
</li><li>Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.
</li><li>Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.
</li><li>Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
</li><li>The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
</li><li>The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
