<div>The Locomotive Diesel Mechanic/Electrician is responsible for performing inspections, troubleshooting, repairs, and preventative maintenance on diesel-electric locomotives and related mechanical/electrical systems. This position ensures all locomotives meet FRA, AAR, and company safety and operational standards. Work is performed in a shop and field environment and requires strong diagnostic skills, attention to detail, and adherence to safety protocols.
Duties and Responsibilities<ul><li>
Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on diesel-electric locomotives.</li><li>
Inspect, test, and repair electrical systems, wiring, control circuits, relays, alternators, generators, traction motors, and battery systems.</li><li>
Diagnose and repair diesel engines, fuel systems, lubrication systems, air compressors, cooling systems, and associated mechanical components.</li><li>
Perform FRA-mandated inspections, testing, and documentation, including 92-day, annual, and periodic inspections.</li><li>
Utilize diagnostic equipment, electrical test meters, schematics, and mechanical drawings to identify and resolve issues.</li><li>
Install, maintain, and repair electrical components such as lighting, control panels, sensors, and safety devices.</li><li>
Replace, rebuild, or overhaul engines, pumps, air systems, brake systems, and other locomotive components as needed.</li><li>
Conduct preventative maintenance to reduce downtime and ensure reliability of equipment.</li><li>
Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, and inspection documents.</li><li>
Safely operate locomotive equipment when moving units within shop or yard limits.</li><li>
Follow all FRA, OSHA, and company safety rules and guidelines.</li><li>
Use hand tools, pneumatic tools, power tools, and specialized locomotive repair equipment.</li><li>
Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and continuous improvement activities.</li><li>
Perform other duties as assigned.</li></ul>

Required<ul><li>
High school diploma or GED.</li><li>
2+ years of diesel mechanic and/or industrial electrical experience; locomotive experience strongly preferred.</li><li>
Working knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.</li><li>
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, FRA regulations, schematics, and wiring diagrams.</li><li>
Basic computer skills for work orders, email, and documentation.</li><li>
Ability to work safely in industrial environments.</li></ul>
Preferred<ul><li>
Experience with EMD or GE locomotive platforms.</li><li>
Completion of technical or vocational training in diesel technology or industrial electrical systems.</li><li>
FRA and AAR inspection experience.</li></ul>
The work type is best described as heavy, hands-on mechanical work. Work is very physical, and without proper work planning can result in out of position pushing, pulling, and lifting. Proper body mechanics, positioning and lifting techniques can be important. Employees are urged to seek help when needed with heavier tasks, and to use lifting equipment where necessary. The positioning of the work being performed can change very frequently.
Tools used: Various heavier air and electric powered tools are used, such as car jacks, impact wrenches, and grinders are used daily. Work also requires frequent use of hand wrenches, hammers, chisels, socket wrenches, and ladders. Cutting torches are also used, with welding equipment used upon qualification of employee.
