Highland School: Upper School

The Upper School English teacher reports to the Upper School Director and collaborates with other Upper School teachers. Through its demanding academic and co-curricular programming, the Upper School places a strong emphasis on leadership formation, personalized learning, and experiential education.As a graduation requirement, students take a full year English class each year. The English Department curriculum emphasizes development of writing skills, critical reading and analysis, oral communication, and engagement with texts across all genres and time periods. The Department also offers half credit electives. English Department faculty each contribute to covering these classes; it is anticipated the primary need will be for English II, which focuses on global literature. The capacity to teach across departments, particularly Social Science and English, is valuable.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES<ul><li>Create differentiated instructional plans aligned with grade-level standards</li><li>Collaborate with fellow teachers and specialists on curriculum development</li><li>Assess student progress toward objectives, expectations, and/or goals to provide feedback to students, families, and administration</li><li>Prepare a variety of written materials (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) to document student progress</li><li>Communicate with families, colleagues, counselors, and specialists regarding students&rsquo; educational objectives</li><li>Attend and help organize family conferences and school events as needed</li><li>Contribute to school culture and programming as an Advisor; support students as a club sponsor/Certificate committee member</li><li>Use technology and other equipment and materials to instruct and support students</li><li>Attend faculty/staff meetings and serve on committees as requested</li><li>Fulfill weekly/monthly school duties as assigned</li><li>Other duties as assigned by the Head of School.</li></ul>PREFERRED QUALITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS<ul><li>Bachelor&rsquo;s degree in Humanities; Master&rsquo;s degree preferred</li><li>Humanities teaching experience, preferably at an independent school</li><li>Exceptional written and verbal communication skills</li><li>Core knowledge of the development of adolescents</li><li>A passion for and experience with integrating technology into the curriculum</li><li>Lauded experience building relationships with students, parents, and colleagues</li><li>A commitment to collaboration and high ethical professional standards</li><li>A collegial, energetic, and engaging demeanor</li><li>An interest in and commitment to being a full member of the community</li></ul>FOR CANDIDATESIn addition to a competitive salary within independent schools and commensurate with experience, Highland offers a remuneration package that includes health and retirement benefits, as well as tuition remission for eligible children.This job description is not intended to provide a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities required of the employee.
