General Definition of Work 
Performs work ensuring and maintaining the care, safety, and security for inmates and employees within the County&rsquo; jail facility, performing well-being checks for inmates in custody, enforcing rules and regulations, preventing disturbances, assaults, and escapes, and inspecting facilities, performing a variety of physical safety checks such as searching for contraband, looking for signs of vandalism, structural damage and other rule violations, preparing and maintaining a variety of files and records, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Jail Administrator.

Oversight is exercised over assigned personnel.

Essential Functions

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. <li>Maintains security, order, and well-being of inmates in the jail facility.</li>
<li>Books all incoming inmates; interviews to obtain medical history and criminal history; completes arrest forms and jail classification; searches inmate and secures personal property of inmate; takes photographs and fingerprints; issues jail clothing and bedding.</li>
<li>Maintains and keeps accurate jail computer logs of all events occurring in the jail facility; completes incident reports.</li>
<li>Takes custody of inmates; receives escorts and supervises all visitors, volunteers, family services staff, probation officers, and attorneys at the jail facility.</li>
<li>Supervises the daily activities of inmates, including feeding and general care, discipline, medical needs, and cleaning of cell blocks and jail facility by inmates.</li>
<li>Monitors the movement of inmates, visitors, and staff within the jail facility.</li>
<li>Monitors video cameras inside and outside jail facility.</li>
<li>Responds to intercom call requests for electronic door openings, elevator movement, emergency duress alarms, and security breach alarms by using computer touch-screen technology.</li>
<li>Completes documentation prior to release of all inmates.</li>
<li>Tests intoxicated individuals using the DMT-G alcohol testing machine.</li>
<li>Ensures pre-release orders from the court are followed (turn-in of weapons, electronic monitoring, base-line urinalysis, etc.).</li>
<li>Performs bailiff duties at traffic court, and civil and criminal trials.</li>
<li>Transports inmates to and from court and to other facilities, also transports mentally impaired individuals to and from various locations.</li>
<li>Books and fingerprints juveniles sent from court or probation office in accordance with state law.</li>
<li>Performs and documents Telephonic Probable Cause Hearings with county attorney staff and on-call judges.</li>
<li>Performs fingerprinting when requested by public for employment, adoptions, etc.</li>
<li>Places juveniles to secure or non-secure facilities, and placement and transport of intoxicated individuals to detox facilities.</li>
<li>Collects, administers, evaluates, and documents alcohol and drug testing (breath and urine) on inmates (Huber and/or Sentence to Serve) resulting from court orders and probation requests.</li>
<li>Performs health screening of inmates.</li>
<li>The officer is responsible for performing and documents vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, and temperature) in the case of health issues (diabetic, detox/intoxication, suicidal inclinations, seizure, etc.); calls jail physician to determine course of treatment, medications and accurately reflecting jail physician&rsquo;s orders on associated medical records.</li>
<li>Verifies all medications (prescription and over the counter) brought into the jail facility; initiates phone consultation with the jail physician in the absence of the jail nurse; responsible for accurate accounting and dispending of controlled drugs to inmates as directed by the jail physician.</li>
<li>Prepares, delivers, and documents inmates&rsquo; medication, monitors and assists inmates in the taking of medication, assists in changing dressing, etc.; handles the intake of inmates who have contagious or communicable diseases.</li>
<li>Responsible for requesting home monitoring equipment from probation department; performs PBT testing as directed by the court and county probation department.</li>
<li>Compiles data, prepares reports, and keeps inmate records.</li>
<li>Maintains accurate and current records of disposition of all inmates in custody of the County.</li>
<li>Accepts fees or payments for bonding purposes, issues receipts and court appearance dates, keeps records of transactions on inmate&rsquo;s accounts.</li>
<li>Trains in applicable law enforcement principles, procedures in laws and ordinances as they relate to the duties of the position; receives training in self-defense tactics.</li>
<li>Monitors prisoner communications in and out of the facility.</li>
<li>Reviews new in-custody files each day in the jail and contacts appropriate prosecuting Attorney and Court Administration to schedule needed hearing.</li>
<li>Attends and provides courtroom security prior to and during court hearings.</li>
<li>Maintains order in and outside the courtroom and sees to the safety of visitors and participants.</li>
<li>Escorts inmates and from the jail to the courthouse.</li>
<li>Supervises inmates during court hearings and while in the court holding area.</li>
<li>Receives, escorts, and supervises all Family Services Staff, Probation Offices, and Attorneys while meeting with inmates in court holding area.</li>
<li>Takes persons into custody when direct to do so by the court.</li>
<li>Assists in communication between the Court Administrator and Attorneys about the status of cases to be heard.</li>
<li>Facilitates inmates in signing court documents and communicating court orders to the jail.</li>
<li>Performs other related duties as assigned.</li>
</ul>
Minimum Qualifications
<ul>
<li>High School diploma or GED.</li>
<li>Any combination of general work experience or post high school education that equals two years.</li>
<li>Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.</li>
<li>Must be certified, or ability to obtain certification, in CPR and basic life saving techniques and First Aid.</li>
<li>Pass a criminal history background investigation.</li>
</ul>
Special Qualifications
<ul>
<li>May require possession of, or ability to obtain, specific licenses and/or certifications depending on departmental assignment.</li>
<li>Must meet and maintain all training and education requirements for position.</li>
<li>Two-year community college degree or vocational degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, police science or related field is preferred.</li>

Physical Requirements and Activity

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and tasting or smelling.
