This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration. 
Research Title:
Benchmarking Privacy-Enhancing Technologies 
Project Description:
This project focuses on benchmarking privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) to assess their effectiveness in protecting sensitive information. The candidate will work as part of a team to conduct experiments and write research reports that focus on work from the NIST PETs Testbed, including the Collaborative Research Cycle, which benchmarks synthetic data generators, and the Privacy Red Teaming Exercise for Genomic Federated Learning. The student will have the opportunity to explore various research topics, such as conducting or analyzing privacy attacks, investigating the statistical properties of input and output data, and implementing and tuning PETs. Projects will be matched with the student's interests and background. 
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
<ul><li>Conducting original research under the guidance of senior scientists</li></ul>
<ul><li>Collaborating with team members to design and execute experiments</li></ul>
<ul><li>Analyzing results and contributing to the writing of research reports</li></ul>
<ul><li>Implementing and tuning PETs to assess their effectiveness</li></ul>

PREP Research Associate

The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration. 
Research Title:
Guidelines Development for Smart IoT Product Security 
The work will entail:
<ul><li>Development of guidelines for Smart IoT products security across the lifecycle from product development and manufacturing through use and operation to maintenance and end of life.</li></ul>
<ul><li>Identifying the interaction of IoT product components with AI engines (i.e., providing data to feed models which in turn identify autonomous actions for the IoT product to take) and the cybersecurity risks of each step of this interaction</li></ul>
<ul><li>Updating and completing CSWP 33 Product Development Cybersecurity Handbook: Concepts and Considerations for IoT Product Manufacturers to incorporate products with AI components</li></ul> 
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
<ul><li>Updating analysis of international IoT cybersecurity standards and guidance identifying common elements and unique contributions for consideration</li>
<li>Identifying risk modeling and management methods that are applicable for IoT products with AI components</li>
<li>Identifying cybersecurity and privacy implications of the convergence of IoT and AI</li>
<li>Presenting results at internal meetings, and occasional meetings with external stakeholders.</li>
<li>Ensuring that results, protocols, software, and documentation have been archived or otherwise transmitted to the larger organization.</li></ul>

? A Master's degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, Systems Engineering, Industrial Design or Engineering, Manufacturing, Engineering Management, Technical policy or related field.

? Familiarity with autonomous systems
? Familiarity with artificial intelligence systems
