 General Position Summary
 
 
 
 The Coding Specialist works as part of the billing team to abstract data from the patient charts based on clinical documentation.
 
 
 
 Essential Duties And Responsibilities
 
 
 
 <ul>
 <li>
 Reviews patients&rsquo; medical records and assigns diagnoses and procedure codes according to the principles of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS guidelines.
 </li>
 <li>
 Ensures compliance with federal and state regulations.
 </li>
 <li>
 Assigns and sequences all codes for services rendered.
 </li>
 <li>
 Abstracts pertinent data from the medical record.
 </li>
 <li>
 Possesses a working knowledge of applicable payer methodologies.
 </li>
 <li>
 Able to determine if medical necessity was met within the patient record according to clinical documentation.
 </li>
 <li>
 Ensures all codes used are current and active.
 </li>
 <li>
 Reports missing or incomplete documentation to the provider.
 </li>
 <li>
 Performs regular chart audits and coding reviews to ensure clinical documentation is accurate and precise.
 </li>
 <li>
 Provides training to providers and nursing staff as appropriate.
 </li>
 <li>
 Works with departments to optimize workflow for locking of notes.
 </li>
 <li>
 Ensures confidential information gained through job performance is kept confidential.
 </li>
 <li>
 Must demonstrate good internal and external customer service skills.
 </li>
 <li>
 Physical attendance is an essential element of the job and necessary to perform the essential functions of this position.4

 Qualifications
 
 
 
 <ul>
 <li>
 High School diploma or equivalent. Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification preferred or must be willing to obtain certification within six months of hire.
 </li>
 </ul>
 <ul>
 <li>
 Two to five years&rsquo; previous coding experience required.
 </li>
 <li>
 Must be self-motivated with well-developed organizational skills and computer experience, including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, and database functions.
 </li>
 <li>
 Must possess strong communication skills; works well with external organizations and employees.
 
 
 </li>
 </ul>
 
 Physical Demand And Working Environment
 
 
 
 Fast-paced office setting with travel to other offices often. Lifting and/or exerting force up to 15 pounds occasionally, with frequently moving of objects. Work requires speaking, sitting, bending, walking, standing, hearing, and stooping, kneeling, and repetitive motion with certain activities. 8-10 hours of constant computer usage. OSHA low-risk position.
