Kovitz Shifrin Nesbit is growing! A well-established and leading real estate tax firm focusing on the appeal of single-family homes and homeowner associations is seeking a full-time Paralegal for our Chicago, IL office. Must have strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Must be comfortable working independently yet be a team player. Must be able to efficiently manage multiple projects and exercise good judgment in dealing with highly confidential matters.
The starting hourly role for this position is $35.72, contingent up level of experience. Business hours for this non-exempt position are 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. The position requires a minimum of 60-90 days of in-office training. Duties/Responsibilities:<ul><li>Prepare and distribute tax appeal proposals for new clients.</li><li>Prepare assessed valuation complaints and supporting documentation on behalf of clients.</li><li>Review appeal documentation for accuracy; scan, profile, and archive materials in document management system (iManage).</li><li>Obtain Property Index Numbers (PINs) from appropriate sources.</li><li>Maintain and update assigned tax databases to ensure accuracy and completeness.</li><li>Assist attorneys with large document productions and other related projects.</li><li>Conduct legal research, cite checking, and contract review.</li><li>Prepare Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and opinion letters.</li><li>Collaborate with multiple attorneys and clients, providing regular status updates.</li><li>Draft, finalize, and submit appeal documents for Condominium, Homeowner, and Townhome Associations.</li><li>Perform other related duties as assigned.</li></ul>
Requirements:

Qualifications:<ul><li>2+ years of experience in property tax work required.</li><li>Demonstrated experience preparing and filing tax appeals before the Cook County Assessor and Board of Review.</li><li>Knowledge of the Property Tax Appeal Board (PTAB) processes preferred.</li><li>Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; strong general computer skills.</li><li>Experience with Microsoft Access preferred.</li><li>Ability to type 50+ words per minute with at least 90% accuracy.</li><li>Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.</li><li>Collaborative team player with the ability to work independently when needed.</li><li>Experience with document merging.</li></ul></div>

The ideal candidate will have 2-5 years of experience researching and filing property tax appeals with the Cook/Collar County Assessor Offices, the Cook County Board of Review, and the Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board. KSN supports attorneys who are eager to learn, have a strong work ethic, and practices law with an entrepreneurial spirit. Qualified candidates must be licensed in Illinois and have strong writing and analytical skills.
The starting salary for this position is $105,000, contingent up level of experience. Duties/Responsibilities:<ul><li>Assist with the administration of property tax appeals, including the preparation and timely filing of complaints and supporting evidence at administrative levels and in the Circuit Courts.</li><li>Analyze properties and draft briefs and supporting evidence for residential, income-producing, and owner-occupied properties, including real estate development projects, new construction, building rehabs, and condo conversions.</li><li>Review, interpret, and apply assessment records, assessment histories, and other relevant documentation commonly used in property tax practice.</li><li>Monitor and support complaint preparation for tax objection cases filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County, including court call management and document production.</li><li>Communicate with clients via written and verbal correspondence, summarizing appeal results, providing recommendations, requesting necessary data, and addressing questions regarding pending appeals, new properties, and other matters.</li><li>Liaise with county representatives regarding hearings, scheduling, pending settlements, refunds, and related issues.</li><li>Maintain departmental calendar and docketing.</li><li>Assist with tax incentive and property tax exemption applications as needed.</li><li>Support the Property Tax Department with real estate tax proration matters and other miscellaneous projects.</li><li>Participate in all required Continuing Legal Education (CLE) trainings.</li><li>Perform any other duties as necessary or assigned.</li></ul>
