Status: Part Time (20 hours weekly) Temporary Assignment/Contract Work
Schedule: Tuesday 9:00 am - 3:00 pm; Thursday: 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm; alternating Friday/Saturday: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm 
General Information:
Library support staff perform a variety of duties that help the library serve its communities and help the patrons who visit library locations. The level of duty and responsibility assigned to an employee is related to their relative educational background and experience.
Support staff may be required to perform any of the following duties:<ul><li>
Serving patrons with a strong customer support attitude at the library service desk, both in person and over the phone</li><li>
Processing library materials for distribution</li><li>
Assist co-workers and supervisors with special projects or programs, as assigned</li><li>
Assists patrons in using library services</li><li>
Maintains materials of the branch library</li><li>
Assists with library programming</li><li>
Performs other duties as assigned by the branch manager.</li></ul>
A potential employee of the Livingston Parish Library should possess the following:<ul><li>

Basic math skills</li><li>
Basic computer knowledge</li></ul>
Job requirements for this position include:<ul><li>
Education: A minimum of a high school diploma, or equivalent, is required</li><li>
Ability to work night and weekend hours on a rotating schedule</li><li>
Ability to bend, stoop, carry at least 25 pounds, and push a loaded book truck</li><li>
Must be able to stand for extensive periods of time during the workday</li></ul>

Schedule:
Weekly: Monday 9a-5p, Tuesday 9a-5p, Wednesday 9a-5p, Thursday 12pm-8pm, Friday 9a-5p , Saturday OFF.
Monthly Weekend Rotation: Monday 9a-5p, Tuesday 9a-5p, Wednesday 9a-5p, Thursday 12pm-8pm, Friday OFF, Saturday 8:30a-4:30p
*Evening shifts may change depending on library programs.*
General Statement of Duties<ul><li>
Performs varied library duties and assists patrons in using library services related to Youth Services</li><li>
Provides assistance to library users in securing information and using library resources to meet specific needs related to Youth Services</li></ul>
Essential Duties and Responsibilities<ul><li>
Assists patrons in using the computerized catalog to locate materials
</li><li>Develops knowledge of the branch collection as well as collections at other locations to efficiently and effectively provide accurate information to fill the patron's needs</li><li>
Assists patrons in use of public computers including word processing, internet searching, and use of online databases</li><li>
Maintains order and safety in the library</li><li>
Follows established policies and procedures in performing all functions</li><li>
Assists the Head of Community Engagement in parish-wide programs and initiatives</li><li>
Fully conducts reference interviews with patrons seeking information.</li><li>
Provides backup support at the branch for circulation and adult reference duties when short-staffed.</li><li>
Creates an environment in the children's and teen's area, which provides for enjoyable and convenient use of library resources</li><li>
Maintains current lists of shelf reading assignments in Youth and/or Teen areas.</li><li>
Ensures that the youth area and information desks are kept clean and orderly.</li><li>
Creates attractive and current displays and decorations for youth service area.</li><li>
Plan and conduct branch-level youth services events for parish youth aged 0 to 18 under the direction and supervision of the Head of Community Engagement and Branch Manager.</li><li>
Works with other youth librarians and coordinates to plan shared events that may be held at multiple library locations.</li><li>
Plans and conducts a weekly story time following set guidelines.</li><li>
Provides outreach services to area daycares, preschools, schools, after-school events, camps, and other community groups as needed.</li><li>
Compiles program statistics and submits them according to library procedure.
</li></ul>Knowledge, Skills and Abilities<ul><li>
Working knowledge of children's and young adult books and related materials</li><li>
Familiarity with the developmental needs of children and teens.</li><li>
Ability to work independently and within the direction of Branch Manager and Head of Community Engagement</li><li>
Initiative to determine and complete needed tasks</li><li>
Ability to meet and relate to public and staff members in a positive and constructive manner</li><li>
Knowledge of computers and automated search methods. Ability to effectively use the various information access methods available in the library.</li><li>
Flexibility, initiative, creativity, energy, patience, and tact.</li></ul>
Special Requirements: Valid Louisiana driver's license.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements
REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree in any field with 2-3 years of library experience with job duties and responsibilities related to working with youth and youth programs.
PREFERRED:<ul><li>
Bachelor's degree in a field relating to youth, such as Early Childhood Education, Education with 1-2 years of related library experience.</li></ul>
OR
<ul><li>Library Support Staff Certification with 1 2 years of related library experience working in a public library with job duties and responsibilities requiring a level of independent work and thinking.</li></ul>
OR<ul><li>
Master's of Library and Information Science candidate (currently enrolled) with 1 year of related library experience working in a public library</li></ul>

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Some agility is needed to conduct story time using action rhymes.
The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
