This full-time, exempt position reports to the Director of Enterprise Learning and Development. 


Position Summary 
The Manager, Learning and Employee Development &ndash; Ship Assist leads training, onboarding, safety, and workforce development for Moran&rsquo;s captains, crews, and shoreside teams. This role combines strategic leadership with hands-on engagement to ensure mariners operate safely and effectively in high-risk environments. 


Reporting to the Director of Enterprise Learning and Development, this position partners with Operations, Safety, and HR to align training with business needs and Moran&rsquo;s commitment to zero harm. The role champions The Moran Way &ndash; Listen, Learn, Lead and drives a culture of continuous learning and safe, consistent performance, while building a scalable training model leveraging internal and external resources. 


Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited, to: 


Safety, Compliance &amp; Operational Training (25%)<div> 
<ul><li>Lead safety and compliance training aligned with USCG, OSHA, ISM, and company standards.</li><li>Partner with Safety and Operations to deliver hands-on training in core vessel operations.</li><li>Facilitate onboarding, NSAP, and operational training programs with strong field application.</li><li>Identify training gaps through incident trends, audits, and crew feedback, and reinforce safe work practices.</li></ul></div> 


Training Strategy &amp; Learning Leadership (20%)<div> 
<ul><li>Serve as the Ship Assist learning leader, aligning training with business and operational priorities.</li><li>Develop and execute the annual training plan, including delivery strategy and resource allocation.</li><li>Design blended learning solutions (onboard, simulator, classroom, eLearning)</li><li>Build and leverage a network of instructors and training partners to ensure consistent delivery.</li></ul></div> 


Mariner Qualifications &amp; Workforce Readiness (20%)<div> 
<ul><li>Support development of mariner career pathways across Deck, Engine, Mate, and Captain roles.</li><li>Define competency standards and readiness expectations in partnership with operations.</li><li>Enhance and standardize qualification tools, assessments, and evaluations across ports.</li></ul></div> 


Onboarding &amp; Early Development (15%)<div> 
<ul><li>Lead onboarding programs to ensure new hires are prepared for operational roles.</li><li>Align enterprise and port-level onboarding practices.</li><li>Develop tools, training plans, and guidance to support consistent onboarding experiences.</li></ul></div> 


Leadership Development (10%)<div> 
<ul><li>Support development and delivery of leadership programs across all levels.</li><li>Reinforce expectations around communication, accountability, coaching, and safety leadership.</li><li>Coach leaders to strengthen crew performance and foster a speak-up culture.</li></ul></div> 


Training Execution &amp; Systems (10%)<div> 
<ul><li>Oversee training logistics, scheduling, and instructor coordination.</li><li>Maintain training quality, materials, and standards across locations.</li><li>Support LMS utilization, certification tracking, and training effectiveness measurement.</li></ul></div> 


Leadership Expectations<div>

Required Qualifications 

<ul><li>7+ years of experience in maritime operations, training, safety, or workforce development.</li><li>Strong understanding of ship docking or tug operations.</li><li>Experience delivering training in operational environments.</li><li>Strong facilitation and communication skills.</li><li>Experience designing and developing training programs or learning materials.</li><li>Experience leading, coaching, or developing employees, instructors, or operational teams.</li><li>Ability to manage multiple priorities across locations.</li><li>Willingness to travel regularly.</li></ul> 


Preferred Qualifications<div> 
<ul><li>USCG Deck or Engineering License.</li><li>Operational experience in ship docking or tug operations (Engineer, Mate, or Captain).</li><li>Experience with simulator-based training and structured mariner development programs.</li><li>Familiarity with ISM, SMS, and maritime regulatory frameworks.</li><li>Experience with LMS platforms, blended learning, and training development.</li><li>Exposure to human performance, behavioral safety, or adult learning principles.</li><li>Experience working with subject matter experts, instructors, or external training providers.</li><li>Experience evaluating training effectiveness using feedback and operational performance data.</li></ul></div> 


Physical demands of this position include the ability to: 

<ul><li>Work in active marine environments, including vessels, docks, and terminals.</li><li>Climb ladders, board vessels, and wear required PPE.</li><li>Lift training materials (up to approximately 50 lbs).</li><li>Stand and walk for extended periods during training and site visits.</li></ul>

Pay Transparency 


Moran Towing Corporation offers generous benefits, opportunities for professional growth, and competitive salaries based on geographic location. Our target pay range for the Manager, Learning and Employee Development - Ship Assist position is $105,000 -$115,000 per year. This pay range represents Moran's commitment to pay transparency and is a reasonable estimate of possible compensation for this role at the time of posting. The final salary for this role will be determined based on careful consideration of a variety of factors, such as the candidate&rsquo;s exact location, experience, and expertise related to the qualifications.
