The New Community School is currently hiring a <b>Language Fundamentals Teacher </b>for the 2026-2027 school year.
<br>
<br>
The teacher will guide students in developing a knowledge base of the structure of the English language and in developing
<br>
strategies for applying effective learning skills to increasingly difficult reading and writing tasks.
<br>
<br>
<b>Job Description:
</b></p><ul><li>Teach reading, including syllable patterns, morphology, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension,
</li></ul>spelling, and writing skills in a small group or individual setting.
<ul><li>Administer and/or interpret language skill and psychological testing.
</li><li>Develop and implement individualized instructional plans for each student.
</li><li>Use a diagnostic/prescriptive approach for the planning and delivery of instruction and to remediate basic language
</li></ul><div>skills.
<ul><li>Utilize Orton-Gillingham (structured, systematic, and multi-sensory) techniques and strategies.
</li><li>Facilitate ongoing communication with parents regarding student progress, including written reports and parent
</li></ul></div><div>conferences in accordance with the school calendar.
<ul><li>Communicate with academic teachers concerning appropriate academic accommodations and learning styles of
</li></ul></div><div>students.
<ul><li>Serve as the faculty advisor to 2-4 students.
</li><li>Facilitate and participate in student life activities.
</li><li>Participate in the school&rsquo;s extensive pre-service/in-service training and mentoring programs.
</li><li>Perform other supervisory duties as assigned.
</li></ul></div><p><b>Minimum Qualifications</b>
</p><p>The ideal candidate must possess:
</p><ul><li>a strong interest in working closely with students to improve their language, reading, and writing skills.
</li><li>a master&rsquo;s degree as a Reading Specialist, in Learning Disabilities, in Special Education and/or certification in
</li></ul><div>multisensory instruction (ex. AOGPE) is preferred.
<ul><li>a strong interest in learning disabilities, exploring varied instructional strategies, and working with students who have
</li></ul></div><div>struggled in previous school placements.
<ul><li>the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
</li><li>the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, parents, and the
</li></ul></div><div>broader community.
<ul><li>a strong desire and willingness to grow professionally and work as part of a team.

This teacher will teach small classes of students in a supportive, professional environment.

<b>Job Description</b>:
</p><p>The Upper School English Teacher is responsible for creating a classroom environment that develops in each
<br>
student the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing that are fundamental to effective communication and
<br>
literate citizenship; that develops appreciation for literature of all types; that motivates students to read widely for
<br>
information and recreation; and develops critical judgment of written and oral communications transmitted by mass
<br>
and social media.
</p><p><b>Essential Duties:
</b></p><ul><li>Teaches content and skills in English language, literature, composition, and reading.
</li><li>Adapts English material and methods to meet the diverse needs of students.
</li><li>Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of
</li></ul><div>each student.
<ul><li>Utilizes standards-based assessment to determine students&rsquo; mastery of learning objectives.
</li><li>Implements evidence-based teaching and learning practices and designs a full range of meaningful
</li></ul></div><div>assessments in which students are regularly asked to demonstrate understanding.
<ul><li>Explores and integrates a range of resources, including technology, to engage, enhance and extend learning
</li></ul></div><div>goals.
<ul><li>Understands the role of social, emotional and physical wellbeing in the teaching and learning process and
</li></ul></div><div>encourages the development of lifelong healthy behaviors.
<ul><li>Encourages students to think independently and express ideas.
</li><li>Serves as the faculty advisor to a small group of students.
</li><li>Facilitates ongoing communication with parents regarding student progress, including formal written
</li></ul></div><div>reports.
<ul><li>Participates in the school&rsquo;s extensive pre-service/in-service training and mentoring program.
</li><li>Contributes to the school&rsquo;s rich student life program.

</p><ul><li>Must possess a Bachelor&rsquo;s degree in a related field
</li><li>Must be eligible or possess Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License
</li></ul><div>with appropriate endorsement to teach English.
<ul><li>Must possess a strong interest in learning disabilities, exploring varied instructional strategies, and working
</li></ul></div><div>with students who have struggled in previous school placements.
<ul><li>Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
</li><li>Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff,
</li></ul></div><div>parents, and the broader community.
<ul><li>Must possess a desire and willingness to grow professionally and work as part of a team.
</li><li>Masters of Arts in English preferred.<br>
