Director of Faculty and Curriculum - Office of Executive Education

<div><p>Professor Dave Russell at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) is seeking a Research Scientist to conduct studies in the area of accretion onto compact objects. Candidates with interest and experience in technical expertize related to coding and maintaining pipelines for optical imaging / photometric data analysis, are strongly encouraged to apply. Interest in the study of accreting black holes or neutron stars are also preferred. </p><p><b>Resposibilities:
</b></p><p>In this role, you will write and test pipelines for astronomical data analysis, analyze multi-wavelength astronomical data from black hole and neutron star X-ray binaries and related objects, and obtain new data of these sources. This includes, but not limited to; preparing publications based on the results, giving presentations at international conferences and institutes/universities and working with members of the Accretion &amp; Jets group of D. Russell at NYUAD, and international collaborators.
</p><p>Candidates would be working with Principal Investigator (PI) Dave Russell and his group. The Physics group at NYUAD currently has more than a dozen faculty members and 20+ post-docs and research associates; most are members of the Center for Astrophysics and Space Science (CASS). The group shares close links with staff at NYU in New York. Stellar-mass black holes residing in X-ray binaries (XBs) produce the most powerful jets in our galaxy via accretion from an orbiting companion star. The main objective of the research program of the PI is to uncover the nature of accretion and relativistic jets onto black holes and neutron stars, and understand the connections between accretion and ejection. The processes involved in triggering outbursts, using optical monitoring and the real-time pipeline X-ray Binary New Early Warning System (XB-NEWS) developed at NYUAD, and comparisons to AGN and other compact objects, are also studied. A host of techniques and approaches are employed, in particular using a wealth of multi-wavelength data of transient XBs (photometry, spectra and polarimetry), interactions between jets and the interstellar medium and data from other accreting objects such as AGN, CVs and gamma-ray bursts. Funds are available for travel to conferences, collaborations or observing trips. Successful candidates will be encouraged to develop independent projects in addition to supporting the research of the PI.
</p><p><b>Qualifications:
</b></p><p>Candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent terminal degree with at least 6 years of relevant experience in their field (not including the years obtaining the PhD or equivalent terminal degree) along with extensive research and publication in well-known journals and conference papers or similar research accomplishments. In their role, these specialists are responsible for designing, managing, undertaking, and analyzing research will have experience with astronomical data pipelines, and extensive research and publications in well-known journals. Organizational skills and attention to detail are essential.

Research Scientist in the Division of Science (Physics) - Dr. David Russell

<div><p>The Life Molecules &amp; Materials Lab at New York University Abu Dhabi pursuing cutting edge research in the areas of self-organization and function of proteins seeks to recruit a junior research scientist with expertise in quantitative confocal fluorescence microscopy and membrane biochemistry.
</p><p>The lab is currently focused on (1) developing bottom-up approaches to study the role of membrane shape in the function of intracellular organelles such as Golgi Apparatus and (2) understanding the determinants of protein solubility in the crowded intracellular mileu. Our research integrates biochemistry with physical chemistry and soft matter physics, and employs state-of-the-art tools including analytical ultracentrifugation, optical tweezers, confocal fluorescence microscopy, SAXS, NMR spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Group members receive training at the interface between physics, biology, and materials science, and will have access to generous travel allowances to attend international conferences and engage in scientific collaborations across the globe.
</p><p>Candidates must have a B.S. in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or a related field and should be proficient in basic quantitative microscopy and wet lab biochemistry techniques and have prior experience preparing and manipulating giant unilamellar vesicles. In addition, the successful candidate should demonstrate ability to independently perform quantitative data analysis using MATLAB, Python, or Mathematica etc. Good oral- and written communication skills in English are essential, along with great attention to detail and record-keeping in the lab. The successful applicant will also participate in guiding graduate- and undergraduate students in laboratory experiments and data analysis as well as assisting in drafting research papers and reports. <div><p>The New York University Abu Dhabi Computational Approaches to Modeling Language (CAMeL) Lab seeks to hire a new Research Engineer / Technician to work in any of the lab research areas, to be involved in the development of open-source tools and resources, and to work on publications related to their work. CAMeL's mission is research and education in artificial intelligence, specifically focusing on natural language processing, computational linguistics, and data science. The main lab research areas are Arabic natural language processing (orthography normalization, grammatical error correction, morphology tagging, syntax parsing, readability assessment), machine translation, and text analytics. Since its establishment in 2014, the CAMeL Lab has produced over 200 publications and 20 language resources and tools. The lab website is http://www.camel-lab.com/ . </p><p>The position will target the rank of <b>Research Engineer (MS), </b>and <b>Research Technician (BS) </b>with at least 3-5 years of experience. A strong preference is for individuals with (a) computer science or computer engineering degrees including previous experience in natural language processing or computational linguistics/language technologies degrees; (b) strong programming and software engineering skills, and machine learning experience; and (c) some research publication experience. Knowledge of Arabic language is preferred, but not required. Previous work on Arabic NLP is preferred but not required.
