Part I: Position Summary: 
The school custodian plays an essential role in maintaining the building and physical plant, and supporting a learning environment that promotes health, attitude and pride of students. In addition to regular building maintenance functions, the school custodian provides direct support to classroom teachers in set up and maintenance of furniture and equipment. The school custodian also serves as a role model for students by displaying a professional, courteous, and helpful nature. Assists in campus security as necessary.

Part II: Supervision and Controls over the Work:
The school custodian receives day-to-day direction from the school administrator(s) and receives specific performance requirements from the supervisor for maintenance/custodial. The school custodian operates within district and school policies and procedures, and by applying acceptable custodial standards, Labor and Industry standards, and OSHA standards. 
Part III: Major Duties and Responsibilities (depending on specific assignment, duties and responsibilities listed may include, but are not limited to the following):<ul><li>
Cleaning Functions:</li></ul><ul><li>
Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, and refinish floors; clean, dust and polish furniture; wash windows and walls; clean restrooms; dispose of rubbish, change lights, etc.; make certain all areas of the building are kept in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition according to industry and/or district standards.</li><li>
Pick up litter within the schools and on school grounds.</li><li>
Assure safety during inclement weather to including shoveling, salting, providing slip protection on wet floors, securing against wind damage, snow removal from roofs, remove debris from down spouts when clogged, etc.</li><li>
Applies cleaning chemicals according to established safety procedures.</li><li>
Adheres to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving, and operating equipment.</li><li>
Performs minor repair and maintenance as authorized by district maintenance staff.</li><li>
Removes extraneous dirt/markings from interior and exterior vertical/horizontal surfaces (walls, doors, etc.).</li><li>
Advise building principal/Maintenance Department on matters relating to mechanical equipment and/or building maintenance.</li><li>
Performs minor painting to walls, rails, playgrounds and other areas of the school.</li><li>
Keeps all equipment in a good state of repair and cleanliness.
</li><li>Administrative Functions:</li></ul><ul><li>
Initiate maintenance service requests according to district procedures. Follows-through to assure that maintenance is performed in a timely manner.</li><li>
Maintains inventory and request cleaning supplies and materials needed to accomplish assigned tasks.</li><li>
Maintains awareness of energy conservation and make suggestions of methods and procedures to consider energy.</li><li>
Secures equipment and supplies and protects against pilferage, loss, theft, or abuse.</li><li>
Required to follow Board policies and stay abreast of updates and changes.</li><li>
Safety and Security:</li></ul><ul><li>
Periodically inspects, or otherwise maintains awareness of, facility and equipment to detect and prevent injuries or damage.</li><li>
Secures school building to insure proper building security at all times. Lock, secure and code out building at end of shift.</li><li>
Verifies that emergency equipment is maintained and repaired as need be.</li><li>
Assists in implementing emergency planning and response.</li><li>
Performs other duties as assigned.</li></ul>
Part IV: Minimum Qualifications:<ul><li>
Incumbents must have successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities, or have otherwise demonstrated a commitment to strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with a diverse population.</li><li>
Must have completed an apprenticeship or the equivalent within the specific trade/craft area.</li><li>
Must be trained in First Aid. CPR and defibrillator training may be required.</li><li>
Ability to communicate and maintain good working relations with all District employees, vendors, contractors, and public entities.</li><li>
Ability to work effectively in an environment with frequent interruptions requiring the ability to concentrate and consistently produce accurate work while responding to interruptions and changing priorities.</li><li>
Initiative and ability to work with minimal direction; sound judgment and decision making capabilities are essential.</li><li>
Knowledge of state and local codes related to assigned trade/craft.</li><li>
Must possess a valid Washington State driver&rsquo;s license and a safe driving record and be able and willing to operate district owned vehicles.</li></ul>
Part V: Desired Qualifications:<ul><li>
Graduation from high school or equivalent.</li><li>
Experience with and knowledge of: intrusion alarms, automatic fire alarm/sprinkler systems, HVAC systems and controls (computer controlled type experience preferred).</li></ul>

Employee is required to use properly use such safety equipment as is appropriate to the work to prevent injury to self or others.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. SUBSTITUTE PARAEDUCATOR

This is a standard position description to be used for paraeducator positions with similar duties, responsibilities, classification and compensation. Paraeducators assigned to the position description may or may not perform all of the essential functions indicated in this position description.

Part I: Position Summary: 
The Paraeducator performs a variety of instructional and/or support duties to assist the school and teachers in instruction, supervision, and education of students with special needs in groups or one-on-one teacher to student situations. May work with students on an individual basis as well as small groups to complete assigned work. Keep students on task.

Teachers and/or educational staff associates provide specific directions and oversight for supervision and/or instructional support. Paraeducators (Special Education) are responsible for being familiar with the school/district policies and procedures which govern their work, and for acquiring and applying knowledge of IDEA and Section 504 requirements. 
Part III: Major Duties and Responsibilities (depending on specific assignment, duties and responsibilities listed may include, but are not limited to the following):

Works collaboratively by assisting teachers in assessment, curriculum implementation, student interactions, enforcing safe behaviors, and enhancing social growth of students in the classroom. Such assistance may be provided in special education classrooms, in regular education classrooms to special needs students, and in one-on-one or small group situations.</li></ul> 
<ul><li>
Assist students with common daily tasks such as eating, dressing, toileting, including diapering. May provide colostomy care including emptying colostomy bags and cleaning of the skin. May provide catheterization. May administer tube feedings and/or medication(s) as authorized by the school nurse and supervisory staff. May provide health services and assistance to include changing dressings, assisting with oxygen, assisting with insulin, assisting with nebulizers or inhalers, and assisting with walkers, wheelchairs, canes, crutches.</li></ul> 
<ul><li>
Teach independent living skills such as cooking, laundry, general personal hygiene and cleanliness.</li></ul> 
<ul><li>
Takes action, or assist in taking action, to restrain students who are at risk of harming themselves or others by following school/district approved restraint procedures.</li></ul> 
<ul><li>
Assist in implementing physical and occupational therapy plans by working with students to increase range of motion, mobility, and positioning.</li></ul> 
<ul><li>
May escort students in one-on-one or small groups to and from recess and playground, to and from bus locations, and may be required to ride on the bus with student(s).</li></ul> 
<ul><li>
Communicates with students, parents, and community members with respect and confidentiality and consistent with the direction and guidance of staff, administrators, and school/district policies and procedures.</li></ul> 
<ul><li>
May oversee student safety by such activities as recess and playground supervision, bus duty, crossing guard duty, hallway supervision, etc. Takes steps to intervene when students are not in control or may be in dangerous or unsafe situations.</li></ul>

Provides instructional support and tutoring to students in large groups, small groups, and one-on-one situations.</li></ul>

Proactively support the implementation of necessary visual supports and modifications to the instructional environment to facilitate student engagement in all settings.</li></ul>

The employee must lift and/or move 25 to 50 pounds, and may assist, move, or restrain students with greater weight when required to intervene in student safety issues.
While performing the duties of this job, the paraeducator is frequently required to sit, lift, carry, move about, hear and speak. Paraeducator may be required to perform extensive work at a computer display terminal or stand for longer than two (2) hours.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties. 
The employee may be exposed to infectious disease as carried by students, exposed to student noise and learning resource noise levels.
The employee may be exposed to aggressive student behaviors to include biting, hitting, kicking, and throwing of objects. May be required to wear and utilize safety equipment designed to minimize the risk of injury to the employee and to the student.
The employee may be exposed to bodily fluids and waste while performing duties in life skills, multi-handicapped, and some one-on-one situations.
The employee may be required to travel in school owned or leased vehicles while supervising and assisting students. 
Insurance Benefits 
Employees who are anticipated to work 630 hours during the school year (September 1 through August 31) are eligible for medical, dental, vision, long term disability and basic life insurance benefits.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation 
Eligible employees are required to be a member of the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems Plan. For eligibility information, check on the link to the Department of Retirement Systems' web site. 
Employees also have the ability to participate in tax deferred 403(b) and 457 Deferred Compensation Plans (DCP). These are supplemental retirement savings programs that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
