<b>POSITION DESCRIPTION</b><br>
<br>
Under the direct supervision of a classroom teacher, the paraeducator supports students to participate in their educational program.<br>
<br>
<b>ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS</b><br>
<br>
<b>ALL PARAEDUCATORS:</b>
<ul><li>Assist in the implementation of the Norwalk Board of Education and administrative policies, rules, regulations and directives</li>
<li>Follow Norwalk school policy to ensure student safety</li>
<li>Follow teacher&rsquo;s oral or written directions with accuracy</li>
<li>Assist the teacher with the implementation of classroom instructional goals and Section 504 plans</li>
<li>Assist students with classwork individually or in small groups</li>
<li>Assist the teacher in maintaining student records of attendance</li>
<li>Assist the teacher with documentation of student progress</li>
<li>Assist the teacher with the preparation and distribution of lesson plan materials</li>
<li>Encourage students to interact appropriately with peers</li>
<li>Assist students during recess, breaks, emergency drills, assemblies, on school buses and field trips</li>
<li>Assist and support students to use computers, iPads or other media to access curriculum</li>
<li>Maintain respect at all times for confidential information</li></ul><br>

<b>REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:</b>
<ul><li>Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing</li>

<b>OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</b>
<ul><li>Interact in a positive manner with staff, students, parents, and visitors</li>
<li>Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, and conversation</li>
<li>Maintain a level of approachability by administration, staff, parents, and visitors</li>
<li>Respond to questions and requests in a timely and appropriate manner</li>
<li>Attend meetings and professional development activities as recommended by teacher, supervisor or Principal</li>
<li>Perform other related duties as assigned by teacher, Principal, Special Education or Supervisor</li>
</ul>

<b>QUALIFICATIONS/CERTIFICATES:</b>
<ul><li>High school diploma or equivalency and ParaPro Certificate</li>
<li>Bachelor&rsquo;s Degree, preferred</li>
<li>Associate&rsquo;s degree in education or related field, or ParaPro Certificate, or two (2) years of college</li>
<li>Two (2) years of experience working with children or young adults in a school setting, preferred</li>
<li>Fluency in Spanish preferred</li>
<li>Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Norwalk Board of Education may find appropriate</li>

Days: Monday &ndash; Friday (27.5 hours weekly/schedule determined by Principal)<br>

<b>RESPONSIBILITIES</b>
<ul><li>Follows the scope and sequence of the instructional program as defined and approved by the Norwalk Board of Education</li>
<li>Sets and reinforces clear expectations and routines</li>
<li>Manages the classroom and individual student behavior to maintain an advantageous learning environment</li>
<li>Prepares lesson plans that achieve clear objectives, uses appropriate techniques, and serves the needs of all learners in the classroom</li>
<li>Demonstrates strong content knowledge</li>
<li>Maintains accurate and complete records as required</li>
<li>Conducts parent/teacher conferences</li>
<li>Assesses student learning on continual basis and identify areas of intervention if needed</li>
<li>Keeps parents up-to-date of student progress through use of interim reports, report cards, and/or conferences</li>
<li>Designs instruction to meet the needs of all students through both individual and small group settings as needed</li>
<li>Designs and implements assessments that measure progress and use assessments to refine curriculum and instructional practices</li>
<li>Designs clear and specific learning assessments</li>
<li>Maintains a positive learning environment that encourages open communication between the teacher and learner</li>
<li>Maintains a positive school community image that encourages ethical student behavior</li>
<li>Maintains ongoing communication with parents</li>
<li>Assists in the selection of textbooks, equipment and other education materials</li>

<li>Demonstrated and successful experience in a multi-cultural setting.</li>
<li>Demonstrated ability to teach elementary classes. Experience with team teaching. Urban experience.</li>
<li>Human relations skills to work effectively with students, parents, school administrators and school staff.</li>
<li>Knowledge of teaching methods, materials and education practices applicable to elementary school teaching.</li>
<li>Ability to prepare and implement effective plans.</li>
