Staff Nurse - NICU

Job Responsibilities: Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) registered nurses (RNs) take care of newborns that are sick or premature.&middot; They work with a team of other healthcare professionals to provide the necessary medical care to infants.&middot; In addition to providing around-the-clock care to these patients, NICU RNs offer support to the parents. This parental support can range from emotional encouragement to advising parents on how to take care of an infant when they return home.&middot; NICU RNs work as a team member with other departments and physicians. Their prime responsibility is to ensure that a newborns critical care treatment is secure.&middot; NICU RNs perform life-sustaining care.&middot; Their duties include administering medications, monitoring vital signs and providing vital nutrients to newborns.&middot; Because most premature and sick newborns' lungs are not fully developed, NICU RNs must ensure that infants are breathing and maturing properly.&middot; They keep, maintain and update records of the patient's care.&middot; In addition to medical care, NICU RNs communicate with and educate parents on day-to-day operations as well as home-care procedures.&middot; Responsible for total patient care, including medication, orders and treatments.&middot; Assists the physicians in performing special procedures.&middot; Under the direction and guidance of the NICU in charge closely monitors cardiac and physical status of patient under his/her care.&middot; Assists in emergency nursing procedures necessary for prompt control of changes in patient&rsquo;s physical condition.&middot; Able to perform the techniques of cardiopulmonary resuscitation accurately and effectively.&middot; Keeps abreast of changing techniques in critical care nursing and maintains a high level of expertise in critical care.&middot; Accepts responsibilities delegated by the Head Nurse or team leader and evaluates the nursing care provided in the area assigned.&middot; Maintains the patient&rsquo;s clinical records; assists with execution of the physician&rsquo;s orders; keeps accurate problem oriented nurses notes according to audit committee standards.&middot; Assists the physician with procedures and treatments. Administers treatments including sterile procedures.&middot; Participates in team conferences with team leader and makes up team assignments.&middot; Guides personnel in evaluating patient needs.&middot; Performs patient care within the principles of Team Nursing, reporting pertinent observations or complaints to the team leader and/or Head Nurse.&middot; Assists Head Nurse or Charge Nurse in personnel work evaluation.&middot; Administers medications according to hospital policy.&middot; Practices economical use of equipment and supplies, informs proper authority of discrepancies.&middot; Attends and supports In-service Education Programs.&middot; Participates in or initiates CPR and Codes when necessary.&middot; May make out patient assignment sheets if delegates by the Head NurseTo give a daily report to the NICU In-charge<ul><li>Hands over and takes over the patient and NICU equipment and supply.</li><li>Keeps the NICU neat and tidy.</li><li>Maintains safety of the NICU equipment.</li><li>Prepares and checks NICU supplies.</li><li>Assists NICU Supervisor/Sister in NICU management and officiates in her/his absence.
