Job Description:
MEDICAL ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION
Qualifications:
Certified Medical Assistant (current certification with NHA, AAMA, CCMA REQUIRED) and ability to do the following:
Systems Management:<ul><li>
Demonstrates knowledge and appropriate use of ONCO EMR:</li><li>
Ability to navigate patient flowsheet and identify name of injection regimen, specific regimen information (dosing parameters, scheduling, emetic potential and references), Cycle/Day numbers, review previous treatment doses and move orders accordingly</li><li>
Ability to schedule follow up appointments and print schedules.</li><li>
Ability to record vitals, review medication list and verify smoking status</li><li>
Ability to fax documents, print demographics, office notes, lab reports and insurance cards.</li><li>
Ability to review patient medication list and send patient prescriptions to designated pharmacy.</li><li>
Understanding of the importance of correct diagnosis code ICD-9 and where to find this in the chart.</li></ul>
Completes Injection Administration Competency Record
<ul><li>Demonstrates adherence to OSHA requirements</li><li>
Demonstrates the ability to remove the injections from vital path machine</li><li>
Demonstrates knowledge of the indication for use of individual injection drugs</li><li>
Demonstrates knowledge of individual injections side effects, toxicities, reports complications to RN as appropriate.</li><li>
Demonstrates knowledge of safe handling and administration of injections.</li><li>
Demonstrates knowledge of parameters to treat with l lab values, vitals and proper diagnosis (ICD 10 code)</li></ul>
Injections:<ul><li>
Demonstrates appropriate technique when administrating subcutaneous, intramuscular injections and skin tests intradermal.</li><li>
Verbalizes knowledge of and indication for use of commonly administered injections including; Procrit, Aranesp, Neupogen, Neulasta, Sandostatin, Faslodex, Lupron, B12, Hepatitis B, Flu vaccine, Pneumococcal and Tuberculin</li><li>
Documents appropriately in ONCO EMR</li><li>
Patient and family teaching as appropriate</li></ul>
Department Process and Patient Flow:<ul><li>
Checks daily schedule for responsibilities.</li><li>
Prepares exam rooms for the day</li><li>
Manages physicians and injection schedule efficiently.</li><li>
Works effectively and efficiently. Identifies when to assist patients and colleagues.</li><li>
Ability to recognize change in patient condition and alert appropriate personnel.</li><li>
Ability to communicate efficiently with physicians and staff members from other departments.</li><li>
Demonstrates appropriate technique when assisting with bone marrow procedure.</li><li>
Translate, in Spanish on behalf of the oncology department and physician patients (bilingual Mas)</li><li>
Provide 2nd MA check of injections as required</li><li>
Ability to identify patients who require a gown prior to physician entering the room</li><li>
Manages voice mail efficiently and forwards messages appropriately</li><li>
Ability to discharge patient on a timely manner</li></ul>
Non-emergency calls to 911 and direct admissions to hospital under the direction of the physician:<ul><li>
Ability to call 911 and provides information efficiently</li><li>
Ability to print patient information efficiently and provide documentation for ambulance personnel</li><li>
Prepares patient for transfer via ambulance or by car with family member</li><li>
Ability to contact nursing supervisor at local hospital to efficiently arrange for direct admission</li></ul>
Assist RN with telephone triage:<ul><li>
Taking messages from answering machine in complete and accurate</li><li>
Notifies RN or physician of emergency calls</li><li>
Ability to send non urgent messages, text notes to appropriate personal</li></ul>
PROCEDURE:<ul><li>
Prepares for bone marrow procedure, patient family education, documentation</li></ul>
LAB Coverage:<ul><li>
Demonstrates adherence to OSHA requirements</li><li>
Demonstrates knowledge of drawing blood in efficient manner</li><li>
Demonstrates knowledge of safe handling specimen</li><li>
Demonstrates knowledge of processing specimen efficiently</li><li>
Demonstrates knowledge of completing paper work</li></ul>
PHYSICAL FACTORS:
The physical abilities required of this position may include the following:<ul><li>
Vision sufficient to read handwritten, typed and computer documents throughout the shift</li><li>
Speech and hearing sufficient to receive and communicate detailed information clearly by phone and in person</li><li>
Motor skills sufficient to handle, use or operate computer terminal, fax machine, copier, telephone, needles, IV,</li><li>
Manual dexterity sufficient to use a variety of hand held tools and to manipulate single sheets of paper and/or file materials</li><li>
Physical ability to reach, lift, and bend to retrieve and/or file materials</li><li>
Physical ability to sit, stand or otherwise remain stationary at work post for long periods of time</li><li>
Physical ability to lift and carry 20 lbs.</li><li>
Physical ability to walk up and down one flight of stairs and between patient and departments throughout the day.</li></ul>
Salary Range: $23.00 - $30.24
