PDW is seeking an R&amp;D Automation Engineer to design, build, and optimize advanced robotic and automated assembly systems that accelerate innovation and enable scalable production. This individual will bridge mechanical design, controls engineering, and process development, leading the creation of automation cells, robotic tooling, and quality inspection workflows. 

Working closely with the R&amp;D and manufacturing teams, this role will drive the automation of prototype and production processes, improving repeatability, efficiency, and throughput across programs. 
 
What You&rsquo;ll Do
<ul><li>
Design and develop automation cells integrating robotic arms, cobots, custom jigs, and end-effectors for assembly, inspection, and material handling applications.</li><li>
Program and tune robotic systems (e.g., UR, FANUC, ABB, or equivalent) to execute precision assembly sequences and adapt to evolving R&amp;D requirements.</li><li>
Prototype and integrate control systems, including PLCs, vision systems, and sensors for closed-loop automation and quality assurance.</li><li>
Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to develop automation solutions that improve process consistency and reduce manual effort.</li><li>
Iterate rapidly with R&amp;D teams to validate assembly methods, optimize motion paths, and refine tool designs based on performance feedback.</li><li>
Document and standardize processes, including programming protocols, fixture configurations, and safety procedures, to ensure repeatability and scalability.</li><li>
Conduct structured testing to evaluate accuracy, cycle time, reliability, and overall system performance under realistic production conditions.</li><li>
Evaluate new automation technologies and methodologies, such as collaborative robotics, machine vision, and AI-based quality inspection, for integration into future systems.</li><li>
Support transition to production, ensuring automated solutions are robust, manufacturable, and cost-effective.</li></ul> 

Requirements
<ul><li>
Proven experience in robotics, automation engineering, or advanced manufacturing R&amp;D.</li><li>
Strong proficiency with robot programming and system integration (FANUC, KUKA, or similar platforms).</li><li>
Solid understanding of mechanical design principles, motion control, and end-effector/tooling design.</li><li>
Experience with PLC programming, sensor integration, and industrial communication protocols.</li><li>
Knowledge of machine vision systems, calibration, and automated quality inspection workflows.</li><li>
Proficiency in CAD modeling (SolidWorks, or equivalent).</li><li>
Ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and optimize complex electro-mechanical systems.</li><li>
Excellent communication and documentation skills &mdash; capable of translating technical findings into clear, actionable insights.</li><li>
Self-directed, detail-oriented, and energized by cross-functional collaboration in a fast-paced R&amp;D environment.</li></ul> 

Preferred
<ul><li>
Hands-on experience with collaborative robots (cobots) and human-robot interaction safety standards (ISO 15066).</li><li>
Familiarity with Python or C++ for automation scripting, simulation, or data collection.</li><li>
Experience integrating machine vision systems (Cognex, Keyence, OpenCV) and sensors for adaptive automation.</li><li>
Exposure to rapid prototyping methods (3D printing, machining, additive manufacturing).</li><li>
Background in process optimization and design-for-automation (DFA).</li><li>
Knowledge of manufacturing quality systems and statistical process control (SPC).</li><li>
Experience in bringing prototype automation systems to pilot or production deployment.</li></ul> 

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, climb, and move about regularly throughout the day and lift / carry up to 50 pounds. Must have manual dexterity to operate standard machine shop equipment as well as standard office equipment. Must be physically capable of tolerating loud noise, heat, cold, dust, or chemicals (with PPE). 

Work Environment

This position typically operates in a standard office setting and manufacturing environment. This role requires use of standard office equipment and may involve exposure to loud noise, heat, cold, dust, or chemicals (with PPE) and may require occasional travel to test sites/customer locations/supplier facilities. This position may have exposure to outdoor weather conditions, noise, and non-climate-controlled environments. May require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) depending on the environment. This is a fast-paced work environment and requires cross departmental collaboration with independent and team-based responsibilities. Standard works hours for this position are 8:30am-5:00pm with occasional overtime as operational needs demand.

R&D Automation Engineer

Now, we&rsquo;re entering a new phase of growth and are looking for a Program Manager, Manufacturing &amp; Materials Integration to support project management of new product introductions and material management processes within PDW&rsquo;s advanced production environment from new product development through production release. This individual will play a critical role in ensuring that all materials, components, and processes meet the highest standards of performance, reliability, and compliance as we move from prototype development into full-scale production. 


What You&rsquo;ll Do
<ul><li>
Provide project management on new products and engineering changes to ensure accurate execution within Production Operations (Supply Chain, Production Planning, Materials Management, Production, and Shipping).</li><li>
Collaborate with Project Engineering to align and coordinate efficiently all new products and engineering changes through the entire product lifecycle</li><li>
Oversee coordination of production inventory management, ensuring accurate tracking and traceability of materials from R&amp;D through full-rate production release.</li><li>
Operations including supply chain, production quality, and material flow to reduce lead times and costs while increasing reliability.</li><li>
Drive continuous improvement initiatives throughout all aspects of Production</li><li>
Collaborate cross-functionally with design engineering, product, supply chain, production, test engineering, and sustainment teams to ensure a seamless transition from development to release.</li></ul> 


Requirements
<ul><li>
Bachelor&rsquo;s degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain Management, or related discipline</li><li>
Minimum of 5 years of experience in manufacturing, new product development, vendor qualification, or quality leadership.</li><li>
Deep knowledge of new product development and introduction processes in an accelerated fast-paced environment.</li><li>
Deep knowledge of inventory management systems, ERP/MRP platforms, engineering change management, and lean manufacturing principles.</li><li>
Strong leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills with a demonstrated ability to drive cross-functional collaboration.</li><li>
Excellent communication skills and the ability to represent PDW in front of senior leadership, customers, and external partners.</li><li>
Strong background in aerospace, defense, or advanced manufacturing environments.</li><li>
Active security clearance (or ability to obtain one) required.</li></ul> 


Preferred
<ul><li>
Proven experience scaling production operations to high-rate production volumes</li><li>
Experience in a fast-paced, high-growth environment &ndash; startup or tech industry experience a plus</li></ul>
