Porter-Starke offers a full range of care for adults, families, adolescents, and children with mental health or substance abuse issues. Our compassionate team of mental health professionals develop customized care plans that ensure the best possible care for each person's unique situation.

Porter-Starke Services, Inc. is a Community Mental Health Center (CMHC) based in Valparaiso and serves northwest Indiana with outpatient offices in Portage and Knox and a Recovery Center (OTP) in Valparaiso and LaPorte. Porter-Starke also operates Marram Health Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with two offices in Gary and Hebron.

COMPETENCIES:

The Psychiatrist must demonstrate knowledge of:
<ul>
<li>Theories and principles of human behavior, psychopathology, diagnostics categories, family systems theory and mental illness.</li>
<li>Basic and general principles of medicine and health.</li>
<li>A thorough knowledge of psychopharmacology and psychoactive medications, their use and dosages.</li>
<li>A broad array of treatment methodologies and the health and mental health service system.</li>
<li>The clinical management and supervision of allied professional and paraprofessional staff.</li>
<li>Management of acute-care and hospitalized patients.</li>
<li>Management of psychiatric emergencies.</li>
</ul>
The Psychiatrist must demonstrate skills in:
<ul>
<li>Listening to, interpreting and implementing clinical interventions.</li>
<li>Presenting information and responding to questions from individuals, families, colleagues and the general community.</li>
</ul>
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
<ul>
<li>Psychiatrist will see clients in an outpatient setting</li>
<li>Provides initial psychiatric diagnoses and assessments in emergency and non-emergency situations in both acute care and sub-acute care situations.</li>
<li>Provides medication management and other treatment interventions to clients and patients directly.</li>
<li>Provides coaching, instructions and direction to allied professional and paraprofessional staff and leads clinical team meetings.</li>
<li>Consults with general medical professionals regarding the psychiatric condition of their patients.</li>
<li>Rotates on call with other members of the clinical staff.</li>
<li>Attends and participates in and supports Medical Staff meetings and other committee assignments as may be directed by the Director, Medical Staff.</li>
<li>Assists in Performance Quality Improvement efforts of the organization.</li>
</ul>
RESPONSIBILITIES:
<ul>
<li>Conducts professional practice that is in compliance with the rules, regulations and by-laws of Porter-Starke Services and the standard of care that exists in Northwest Indiana and the Greater Chicago metropolitan area.</li>
<li>Assists in peer review and other assignments.</li>
<li>Attends to the required continuing education elements for the specialty certification and licensure of physicians and psychiatrists.</li>
<li>Maintains and completes clinical record keeping duties as described in either the Medical Staff By-laws or in compliance with the organization&rsquo;s policies and procedures.</li>
<li>Maintains credentials as required by certifying/licensing body. Participates in professional development and in-service programs as required by position.</li>
</ul>
EDUCATION &amp; EXPERIENCE:
<ul>
<li>A current license to practice medicine in the State of Indiana.</li>
<li>A current license in the United States to prescribe medications.</li>
<li>Completion of an accredited Training Residency in Psychiatry.</li>
<li>Eligibility for and/or certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.</li>
<li>Positive references from past professors and/or supervisors.</li>
